Hi all, Stupid question alert :P

I've just got a new plasma with a built in HD tuner, and am busy setting the favourite channels so I don't have to cycle through them all every time. My stupid question is as follows:

Am I OK to JUST have the HD channels as favourites (so 7HD, 9HD, 10HD ABCHD, SBSHD) and that's it? Or is there a difference in what is broadcast over these channels and the normal channels? If exactly the same schedule is broadcast over the 'normal' channel and the HD channel, then I may as well just set the HD channels as the favourites and ignore the normal channels right?

Told you it was stupid, but hey, I'm new to HD ok

Thanks :D

Not sure where you are located but in regional areas if you only tune the HD channels you will get test loops on 9 and 10 when they are not broadcasting HD.

As long as you're getting all HD channels broadcasting then that should be fine. Note that next year there may be some divergence in the SD and HD broacasts. You'll here all about it if it does happen though.

Ok, great stuff :D I'm in Melbourne and haven't come across any loops yet (but I've only had it setup for a few hours)

Thanks a lot :P

I think you need to have ABC SD tuned.

They do not broadcast the news on HD - you just get the ABC lissajous figure for 30 minutes.

Righto, thanks

You may also wish to have ch 22 scanned in as well.

I have seen ABC with 3 separate bcasts although I didn't see any announcements re that.

At the time 2 was doing something different to ch 22 as well as 21

I'm surprised you have seen this as LCN 2 and 22 both point to the same video broadcast. LCN 21 (ABC2) will always be different from 2 and 22. LCN 20 (ABC HD) is usually the same as LCN 2 and 22, unless there is localised programming (including local news).

In melbourne you need these channels

SBS HD (30), SBS Dig2 (33)

ABC SD (22), ABC HD (20), ABC 2 (21)

7 SD (7), 7 HD (70)

9 HD (90)

10 HD (12)

That covers everything. As said ABC HD doesnt show the news, you just get a logo. 7 HD plays a loop between 9am and 4pm when there arent HD programs on. Well thats in geelong anyway but we get the same as melbourne im pretty sure.

And as was I surprised.

Must have been localised.

Certainly wasn't news.

I think it was a weekend thing from memory.

22 was doing an arts thing, 21 was showing what was advertised, normal programme, 2 was doing another arts type of programme.

Happened a couple of times.

FOLKs if you immediately can't see the difference between SD and HD by simply looking at the screen then its definitely only SD.

Real HD footage will have "depth". The characters seen to come out of the screen like 3D. The first time that I saw HD I was simply stunned. That was overseas and played from a HD Hard-disk.

Yesterday while I was setting-up my brothers new 37" Philips LCD-HDTV I again saw the same depth and 3D imagery on Channel 9 and channel 2 through the TV's built-in tuner however the picture not 100% clear and sharp. It was fantastic to see. Strangely however after attaching an additional HD STB to the TV there was no depth or 3D imagery only very clear sharp coloured pictures which you would normally get from a STB.

Has anyone else been able to see this Depth and 3D from their HDTV while watching channel 9 or 2?. I did not expect this from our HD broadcast in Perth.

Noel.

I wasn't questioning the picture quality, I was questioning the content (ie, are exactly the same programs broadcast on both the SD and HD channels)

That's been answered anyway, so thanks everyone :D
