okydoke Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Hi guys, I manged to come across some Polk RT3's for free (http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/products/recent/rt3/) and was looking at setting up a small system in my bedroom for quiet listening. Basically I am wondering what sort of cheap amp I would be able to pair with these speakers to get some decent (if possible) sound. If I'm looking at spending $300 or so I assume it would be more worthwhile to invest in some Audioengine A5's or similar at $400 or so. The source is likely to be the line out of a 5.5g Ipod. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Grizzly Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Welcome to SNA! Your best bet would be secondhand at that price, I'd imagine these would want 60-70 watts pushing them (?), however (and no disrespect intended) if you plan to use low bitrate (below 192) mp3 as a source you probably wont find an amp that can make it sound good. Anyway, if you hang around for long enough you'll probably end up with a turntable, transport and DAC (plus empty pockets!) before long:p. Perhaps NAD, Cambridge Audio, Yamaha would be worth investigating. Or put a want ad up here and see what comes of it. Best of luck mate:cool:
okydoke Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 Hey bear, thanks for the welcome! I've got my ipod running on rockbox firmware with largely 320kbps or flac files. I realise how expensive audio can get - just getting my desktop headphone setup and my portable system running has seen me out of pocket for some time now! Regarding the RT3's, from what I gather the max they can handle is 100w, does this mean an amp pushing 100w would be more suitable that one with 60 or 70? Cheers again
