The YST-SW300 has a frequency range of 18 Hz - 160 Hz. MAGNETIC SHIELDING The subwoofer is magnetically shielded so it can be placed near a TV monitor or receiver without fear that it will degrade the picture. BASS ACTION SELECTOR SYSTEM (BASS)* This dual function sound control provides bone-shaking bass, high-impact bass for movie effects and tight, accurate bass for music reproduction. CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE HIGH-CUT FILTER The user adjustable continuously variable high-cut filter sets the highest frequency the subwoofer will deliver. It can be set anywhere from 40 Hz - 140 Hz. For instance, if the filter is set at 75 Hz, only frequencies 75 Hz or below will be delivered by the subwoofer. HIGH-PASS FILTER* The high-pass filter operates as a crossover and can be set at 50, 80, or 100 Hz. When using satellite speakers, setting the filter at the frequency recommended by the satellite manufacturer, or at lowest frequency the satellites deliver, protects the satellites and blends the sound of the system. SIGNAL SENSING ON/OFF For convenience, the YST-SW300 has a signal sensing circuit. When the subwoofer detects an audio signal, it turns its power on. When it senses no signal for several minutes, it shuts itself off. PHASE NORMAL/REVERS SWITCH Makes it easy to phase the subwoofer with the other speakers in your system. HEAVY-DUTY SPEAKER TERMINALS Yamaha's heavy-duty speaker terminals accept banana plugs, spade connectors, and a variety of speaker wire, including heavy gauge cable. I can only imagine what an experience of watching something like U571 would be like with 9 subs in full flight!
jdh500 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 (edited) How's the Jamo 12in sub I sold you some time ago going, are you keeping it or selling it?, I'd suggest selling them all off and buy either 1 or possibly 2 very good subs !!!!!! to replace the 9 subs. The Wharfedale Powercube 12DX you are selling is a bit of a bargain !!!! JDH. Edited November 6, 2009 by jdh500
Rhett Morson Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 I want to buy a modest sub for a home theatre system - but I really havent the faintest idea of what is a good second hand unit - are any of the 9 good for this?
lonewolf Posted November 6, 2009 Author Posted November 6, 2009 (edited) Hey JDH, I dont know if i want to sell the Jamo, IT has served me well over the years, Even the Wharfedale was a tough decision but i am thinking of getting a couple of new sadly quite expensive subs and hence decided i just cant hold onto all my subs anymore. I still got a subsonic sub, a snell, a DIY 15", the jamo and a Rel (small one). Plus i was planning on getting a couple of expensive subs over that, so i think i would need to sell a few of my other ones as well just not sure which ones yet. Hopefully i can first clear these off, if i cant then no point even considering selling the others too. Mozart: I know the scene you are talking about in U571, it was a killer, but pretty much most movies makes my whole room and the downstairs rooms shake. The downstairs vents vibrate when i am watching a movie upstairs. I got used to it after a while, i never really though of how much bass i was outputting until i had people come over every now and then who had never been in that room before experience a movie then i will be reminded it is more output than what is standard. wat44: I am not sure how what kind of a HT system you have and what type of sub you were after. IF you were going to buy a 2000$+ sub then of course that would be better than the subs here so i guess it just depends what type of sub you were after. I dont really feel comfortable saying my subs are better than this or that or that you should get them etc etc cos it may sound like i am tooting my own horn / sale . I think it just all depends on your budget and what type of sub you were after. I personally feel 2 subs are always better than 1 but then again i guess i felt more the better but technically speaking thats not true. From what i have heard / read its good to have 2-4 subs, 4 being the max, i think after that it can be better if you have more ONLY if you can really tune them all right and make sure none are cancelling each other out etc and i think more than 4 that becomes extremely difficult. I have noticed the status quo even with speaker manufacturers etc is to have minimum 2 subs. Edited November 6, 2009 by lonewolf
Sentient Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 (edited) I've always been of the opinion that if you had a limited budget, then it's best to invest all your $ into 1 really good sub, than to invest the equivalent $ into 2 subs of a lower build standard. But I've since changed my opinion. I am currently running 3 subs in my system, 2 up the front integrated into the front soundstage, and the 3rd is towards the rear closer to the seating position handling .1 lfe duties and lowpass info for the rear channels. The front sound stage is utterly enthralling now, all 3 speaker channels are running full range from the receiver - and it's amazing how much bass is there, when you run those channels in full range and have a system that can reproduce that bass properly. I was going to sell off the 3rd sub, it was my original sub. But it's always been a decent fighter for HT duties, it's a Yamaha YST-800, and I'm glad I've hung onto it. As I like having bass coming from towards the rear of the room. There is so much going on all around me now, in high action scenes. It's really quite amazing. I was watching KungFu Panda last night with the 2yo boy, and he got scared in a loud scene there was so much bass enveloping us, he jumped off the lounge and knocked his head. The missus wasnt happy. I didnt think it was up that loud, but the dynamic range of alot of current release blurays is startling at times. I'd go for that wharfedale, if I was looking for another HT sub. It's looks to be a beauty. Edited November 6, 2009 by ozmillsy
jdh500 Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 I'm using 3 subs too !!!, I'm currently running two Whatmough Impulse 2 10in subs for 2ch stereo/HT and a 3rd Whatmough 12in Huricane sub for HT only. At some stage I'll probably use one of the Impulse 2 subs in another 2ch system and positon the renaining Impulse 2 sub between my main front speakers.
