James Horsburgh Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 I for the first time in many years am upgrading various components of my HiFi. I very recently purchased a pair of Yamaha NS 5000s new and I am Pleased with them. They are driven by two ONKYO M5000R Power Amps in BTL configuration. I'm a A/B kinda Guy and for my purposes these are a worthwhile compromise over a Yamaha M-5000 power amp which I auditioned. I thought was fine but was indistinguishable from what I have.....ie) no quantum leap. I'm 56 and my hearing pulls up at 12kz due to working in Power Stations for years. So maybe I'm a bit of a philistine but I can only hear what I can hear. I have an Eversong DMP-A8 as the Pre. I'm looking for a subwoofer that can add a small(or large) bit of nuance to my Music. My speakers have plenty of top end and midrange and the 12" driver gives great response, but I suspect there's more there..........an audible difference. A sub is a sub I'm reasoning..................it just has to be clear and responsive. I dont give a rats about some claimed super crossover and super dooper mosfet chip that I can have for a mere $14K. Budgets $2-3K. I like the idea of REL's....................................I think I like the idea of enclosed not vented but I'm unaware of the technical arguments at this stage. I have to admit I like the nice Polished black enclosures on the REL's which match my Loudspeakers. One Sub or two? I see many have 2 subs. I'm not sure why. I'm concerned that big isn't necessarily better. I mean a 15" sub that is muddy and drags is what I'm concerned about. Can members please suggest an appropriate Size Sub for the system I have. The game for me as always is not to chase Rainbows but add to the system rather than detract from it at the best price point. Thoughts? Am I totally misguided..................any Logic Errors here?
Audio Slave Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 Hi James. I'm interested in your question regarding subwoofer enhancement for the Yamaha NS 5000s... The bass on the NS5000s is better in every way than any speaker I've owned. While they don't trawl subsonics they come pretty close. Close enough that I relinquished my Bowers and Wilkins ASW 4000 subwoofer. It had the Nautilus 801 15 inch driver in it and was a very good subwoofer. But it was no match for the Yamaha's speed... Would you mind sharing how they are set up? Room, amplification, cables etc... I'm interested, because the Yamahas have so much to give, yet I haven't heard them achieve a fraction of their potential at shows or in any 'commercial' setting. I might be able to offer some useful advice. Cheers! 3
almikel Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 any decent sub would do - it's all about the integration. Mike

mfforever Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Totally agree Audio slave and Al.M ...... had a great REL on my Yammie 1000 but sold it off as not needed with the Yammie 5000 ...... Bass is fast, musical and highly controlled ( even with Massive Attack's Angel which is my go-to track for Bass critique ) 1

Unfortunately haven't had the pleasure of the 5000's in my own space.
