What's The Best Red Wine You Ever Had?

Featured Replies

I was just wondering what Planet Audios wine group considered the best red wine they ever had.

Mine was a 1960 Chateau Battallie I was given as a gift about 7 years ago from a sommelier from belguim that I let stay at my place during a month of wine tasting.[The amount of great wine our group went through during that month ......WHHHOOO!]

It was posted to me out of the blue after he returned to belguim.

The most amazing wine I have ever had the great fortune to taste, and Iv'e been privilieged enough to have tried some of the greats.

l've got a mate who is a wine collector/drinker and has some superb reds........one of the best l've had with him was a 1995 Wendouree Cab sav, have'nt tried a Grange yet.....l would have to be pretty cashed up to bother @ what $100 or more per glass?

cheers ken

Definitely a 1998 Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz from the Eden Valley.

The vines were over 130 years old at the time and still produce some stunning red.

Best white I've ever tasted was a 1982 Guwertztraminer from the Wyndham Estate in the Hunter Valley, closely followed by their 1980 vintage. The entire reisling crop suffered a serious Botritis infection in both years resulting in hand picking of the more affected grapes for these wines.

Hmm, where to begin with this kind of question. First, it wasn't Grange - possibly Australia's most overrated wine, give me a Henschke anyday. I've tried most of the classics, and they were all excellent - Leeuwin Estate chardonnay, Wendouree shiraz, Henschke.

I'd have to settle on (for Australian wines) Bass Phillip reserve pinot noir, probably the 99 at this stage. I also think the Penfolds 707 and Magill Estate shiraz are seriously good wines, overshadowed by Grange, much better value.

European - any grand or premier cru (red) burgundy.

In May this year, I went to HK for my brothers 50th. He had 3 very special wines to celebrate, and man were they to savour.

One was a 50 year old 1956 Bordeaux - Chateau Latour. My brother was disappointed that 56 wasn't the best year in Bordeaux (he said 61, my year was better) but it was stunning to me

I currently have a bottle of wine that I am intending to be the best wine I have ever drunk... Norpus, does your brother welcome visitors?

I must concur but i think the vintage was 86. It was a few years ago now.

Due to consistancy year in year out regarded by many as this countries finest.

Hehe he does. I usually take him duty free wine in (WET and GST 23.5%off) when I visit him. So it is usually 3 or 4 $100+ botts I take him - and then we drink his cellared stuff that is better hehe

He cellars his in an old WWII bunker that they have converted to a high class wine club. We had his 50th there - 50 guests (50 was the recurring theme, along with James Bond), drinking fine wine, port, cigars and playing baccarat. It was a good night - I dressed as 'Odd Job'

I've had a 1972 Grange (my year of birth) followed by a 1986 Bin 707 in the same evening. I've always been afraid to buy a bottle of Grange because I fear that my lack of wine appreciation will stop me from REALLY appreciating the more subtle qualities of each expensive drop! In the end, I thought "ah hang it!" and bought a bottle. To be honest, I can't see why it costs so much ... maybe either affirming my initial fear (that I won't be able to appreciate it), or maybe because it isn't worth that much.

I've also had a glass of 1992 Hill of Grace when I was at Henschke. I was joking with the nice lady that I would like to taste a Hill of Grace and she smiled and said "sorry it's not available for tasting" (probably to discourage all the cellar kickers, so to speak). After an enjoyable hour and a $1000 purchase of several cases of Henschke wines, she said "well actually I do have a bottle open ..." and poured me a small glass. I tried my best to keep it going for as long as possible but I wasn't all that impressed. I thought that some of my cheaper Henschke wines were better.

The expensive wine which I most consistently enjoy is the Penfolds Bin 707 or the Wynn's John Riddoch.

We are your friends if you invite us round for a red :)

A few yers ago there was a blind tasting.

The wines ranged from prices starting at under $10 up to the moon money paid for Grange.

50% of people could not tell a $10-$20 bottle from one that was over $100,no one picked Grange as being the most exxy,it was also definately not the peoples choice either.

The people in the blind test were regular wine drinkers not judges!.

It seems audio is not the only hype people buy into. :) My fear of exxy wine is spilling the damm stuff,or it not living up to expectations.

I may even sell of my Grange collection one day soon, as I know I'll never drink the stuff.I'm only going to collect and keep a couple of bottles from my boys birthday year to drink with them at their 21st.

I'll settle for 389 in the meanwhile :) or possibly RWT fo a special occasion.

Seeing as my wife is not a red drinker we go the Bubbles for an event these days anyway.

Welcome back :)

Believe me not for everyone, but I think it would be special to drink something special with my boys on that day, specifically from the year of their birth.

Though they'll more than likely say it tastes like cats piss and want to keep skulling Bundy or Bourbon :)

It was a dissapointment though when one of the bottles of grange was tainted, down the sink it went :)

The look on my friends faces was priceless as dad grabbed hold of a glass he had poured for someone and threw it into the bushes.

OH MY, I know what that feels like.

I had that last night,a 1999 D'arberg mondevere -the bastard was corked-YUK,I can now see why they are going screw top with all their wines.

I just hope my Granges do not suffer the same fate, penfolds use very long corks for both the Grange and the 707 ,they are actually a total bastard to discork/open as your average corkscrew is only designed for a certain length of cork, and when the cork breaks with about 20mm still in the bottle....AAARRRRGGGH!

The amount of times that has happened to me ,well, bring on the screw caps!

Pinot... OZ..give me a Prince Albert Pinot anyday...a great wine

Cabernet...Lewwin estate art series,..707...some vintages of Capal Vale..the latter can be sublime...Wolf Blass black label

Shiraz..MY FAV...D'arbeg dead arm..[the best by far].. Grange...but it is not totally a shiraz...it's blended.

Hardys Eileen Hardy shiraz...big bold and tasty[second fav]

For the disbelivers of the whole "Great Wines" thing,....well it's like Great HI-FI when it hit's you you sure as hell know and you can sure as hell tell the difference.

Yep, just like with Blue Vein's as well..........................hmmm, Dark side of the moon on vinyl, in the bottle and a nice Roaring Forties Blue to accompany them.

I think I just planned my evening!

Yes it was a lovely drop of wine; little history of it, it was actually given to me by the producer of the three new Star Wars movies wife. They had his and hers Porsches' shipped over from the USA for the movie and needed some help with the audio system.

I can confirm Andrew is a good cook, Heather is the world's fussiest eater and loved her dinner... My pizza was great too!

Too many to mention.

I can't remember the names but I have had some great Bordeaux from St Emillion and Pauliac and a couple of good Burgundys.

I have a Grange (93) and a HOG (88) which I'm going to drink sooner or later, probably will drink them both on the same night with my mates who gave me the Grange. Jasper Hill is superb. I'm a big fan of Zema Estate. Lake's Folly Cabernet with bottle age is fabulous. John Riddoch and Michael are great wines.

The one wine the new world can't do as well is champagne. The best I've had is R&L LeGras Chataeu St Vincent, really nice. Some of the cheap French stuff is crap, can't stand the non-vintage Moet; and some of the better Australian and NZ (eg Pelorus) is quite good; but when it comes to good sparkling champagne is the stuff.

I built a brick cellar in my shed as I like old wine - I may be no brick layer but it keeps it all relatively cool. I see it as an investment in my drinking future!
