o2so Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 This is really a newbie question, please bear with me. Say I buy a turnyable, then I buy a tonearm. How do i know if that tonearm can be mounted on my turntable? I refer to the mount, the size etc? Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
o2so Posted February 21, 2017 Author Posted February 21, 2017 Yeah a bit of a universe that I am opening here. Let's keep it focused. What are the first three things I should make sure of before buying a tonearm?Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
Citroen Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Any tonearm can be mounted on any turntable. It just depends on much reconstruction you're prepared to do! If talking about physical attributes, I consider 1. Will it fit? Length of tonearm/mounting distance, mounting holes (size, shape, depth, clearance needed under/around mounting board for arm pillar, tonearm cable connection etc), height - if you have a lid 2. Will you lose any functions? e,g auto return, finger lift or tonearm rest incorporated in arm or on plinth 3. Weight. Tonearm too heavy for a suspended deck? 2
Peter-C Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Well you can't fit a 12" arm on a Linn. Measure the spindle to Pivot distance on the tt, (if the tt has a hole already for a tonearm).Regas pivot to spindle distance is 222mm for example.Use a database like Vinyl Engine's and look for tonearms with the same P to S mounting distance.https://www.vinylengine.com/tonearm_database.php?make=any&mdl=&sort=2&eflo=&efhi=&ascdesc=ASC&mdlo=222&mdhi=222&ohlo=&ohhi=&search=search&amlo=&amhi=&cw=&mp=Then look at it's mounting system e.g. with Rega again, 3 point or large nut.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
o2so Posted February 21, 2017 Author Posted February 21, 2017 Is there anyone good at this in Sydney who could set it up for me for a reasonable cost?Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk

Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk just for your refference . there is two main lengh arms in the market ( vintage or modern ) is 9.5" and 12" . most factory made turntables is designed to mount a standard 9.5" or there about ( some are not really 9.5" ) it can be 9" . small amount factory made turntable is design for 12" mount . so buy the turntable you like first then you will know if it can mount 12" arm or 9.5" arm . only then you can buy the arm to suit the turntable not the other way around. good luck Duc 1

Ian McP Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 all you need to know Tonearm Geometry and Setup: Martin D Kessler and B V Pisha http://www.melbourneaudioclub.org.au/pdf/tonearm.pdf the next minefield you enter is cartridge/tonearm compatibility, in general moving coil cartridges (low compliance) prefer medium to high mass arms, moving magnet (high compliance) prefer low mass arms http://www.theanalogdept.com/cartridge___arm_matching.htm https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?t=5682 regards Ian 2
MattyW Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Mmmm, hoping to have Duc do a lovely plinth in another two years or so for my JVC QL7. I have my Fidelity Research FR54 tonearm for MC's though also a Mayware Formula 4 for high compliance carts. With two arms on a table I'll have the best of both worlds Have some work to be done on the home first though. Sent from my Redmi Pro using Tapatalk 1
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 It's VERY complicated. Which is why most turntables come with tone arms. A lot can go wrong. 1) Turntable suspension can be affected by improper tone arm selection. 2) Physical constraints mean that a certain tone arm may not be able to be mounted onto a certain turntable. 2

Tase As Maxwell Smart (secret agent 86 for Control) would say - "That's the second-longest tonearm I've ever seen"!
