Item: AWV 5AS4/ Rectifier Tubes
Location: Melbourne

Item Condition: NOS
Reason for selling: Not needed

Extra Info:

These are 5v 3A rectifiers made in Australia by AWV. I'm selling these on behalf of a mate who now only uses 2A rectifiers and who hasn't figured out the interweb yet....

These guys really fly under the radar though I'm sure there are quite a few here that would know of them. Made in Sydney (or poss. Adelaide) in the 60's. Not loads of online info but a bit of digging turns up really positive opinions. They are good for 275ma current so they are 5u4gb spec.... pretty grunty. Will sub for 5u4g/b, 5z3 (different base), 274b etc. There are varying types... 5as4,5u4gb...some have shorter bases, there is even one coke bottle shape but internally they are the same tube. Some of the boxes are a bit ratty.

I have started running one of these in in my line stage and with about 30 hours on it I have to say I am massively impressed but not surprised. I love every tube that I have tried that came out of AWV. The 6v6g's are excellent and up there with the Brimar/RCA/Bendix tubes that I have used as series regs in my line stage. 12au7, 6cg7, el84's....all up there with the best. These rectifiers are up there with my favorite 1940's war era stuff that can cost a whole lot more than these. I have a few of these set aside for myself :thumb:

I think for the price (vs. new EH/JJ 5u4) they are a bargain and they will only get more expensive as they disappear.

Will carefully pack and post at cost. Happy for pick ups too.

Cheers

Chris

edit: On closer inspection I think the RCA tube is actually US made. Rectangle top getter vs round on all the Aussie tubes. Otherwise the same internally. I believe RCA played a large part in the setting up of the AWV valve manufacturing plants which might explain the similarities.

Are the Mullards also for sale? If so I'll take a few.

Just a question I bought some 5AS4's not long ago and they have 8 pins like the ones in your picture. My 5U4GB, 274B and GZ34's are 4 pin is the 5AS4 a direct drop in despite the extra pins?

Hey Marc,

Yep they are for sale and they will drop straight in. I'm running one as I type. The Mullards all have 5 pins as per regular 5u4 and the shorter base, Miniwatt and AWV Super Radiotron ones have all eight pins with only the required pins connected to the tubes guts. The eight pin ones look to me to be older?? So long as your locating peg is lined up you will be apples. Internally they're all the same.

Which ones would you prefer?
