Hi folks. Thought I start a new thread, where experienced community members with extensive direct tube experience can share links to specific great advertised tubes.

For the benefit to this community, hoping to avoid the suggestions of the occasional novice whom like to share their opinion from online research or anecdote.

It is assumed, most on this forum will likely be existing experienced tube rollers whom appreciate (from direct personal experience) the vast superiority of NOS tubes over new production tubes (debate on New Vs NOS tubes can take place elsewhere- Ie. great debate forums).

Let the experience sharing and links begin 😀

I have ordered the EAR Phonobox set up for 12ax7 tubes. Being a complete novice I would welcome some suggestions. My fall back will be new Tung-Sol gold pins.

@PKay Dennis is spot on with his recommendations. If we can find an f91 B7-letter tube for you the trio would be complete. If you are going for a Blackburn mC1 it needs to be B5G or earlier. Here is the Raytheon 5751 windmill getter:

Edit: Adding to the 5751 above for V1 these 2 can be used in V2 and V3:

The 13D3 pair from Doug below is 1958 square getter production from the Brimar Rochester plant. These have the exact same operating characteristics as the 12AU7/ECC82 but exhibit higher gain, almost double that of the 12AU7. Definitely recommended for the price:

12ax7 in a good enough phono pre sound drastically different.
I wouldn’t be lowering the gain with a 5751 but that’s just me.

Some good ones:

Tesla E83CC (not JJ)

Mazda silver plates

Valvo Hamburg Long plate

Philips Long plate

7025 Sylvania long plate, copper rods

Telefunken smooth or ribbed

Mullard M8137

If you want to try some let me know.

Thanks for your very generous offer Ben.  I will send an email to Audiofix to find out when the phono and the MC4 SUT are arriving.

I have really enjoyed using this Western Electric NOS tube as a 12AX7 substitute. I prefer it sonically to many NOS types that sell at far greater prices. It's musically clear and clean and full (if that makes sense). Currently I am using it as a driver in my Line Magnetic 518iA integrated, and my Line Magnetic 218iA Mini to great effect.

The Taiwanese website is well-organised and efficient; the dealer also replaced a tube for me that I broke, without question. You can't ask for more than that.

From the website:

Western Electric 420A=5755(~ECC83/12AX7) ,1970s,O getter

This item is 420A/5755 tube!
( 5755/420A is not a direct replacement tube of ECC83/12AX7 )!!
5755/420A+ socket converter = ECC83/12AX7 !!
You need to buy a converter socket if you want to use 5755/420A in your ECC83/12AX7/5755 amp!! We have such socket for sale, just choose on the bottom of this page!
Westernic Electric 420A=5755, similar to 12AX7/ECC83 but different pin layout!

http://tubes.tw/shop/product_info.php?products_id=1513

Around $US32 each (includes converter and tube matching)

I have a pair of Mullard 10M standard 12ax7 (under international corporation label if anyone is interested.

Not sure that trading outside the classifieds in this arena is policy?

Just in case, but links are sweet

Thanks @xlr8or for suggesting these socket savers (stay clear of anything else, especially the cheap Chinese made junk).

I've ordered several. Postage from the States was very inexpensive too.

Top part is Brand New 1960s British Made McMurdo Phenolic socket. Anti-vibration Base* has silicone to reduce microphonics. Tube pins are exact size of a typical NOS Philips tube for snug fit, unlike cheap Chinese bases with thinner pins that wobble in the sockets. Engineered in-house and precision manufactured for us with high quality materials.

1st link suits: 12Axx to ECC88 adapter will let you use common tubes like 12AX7/ECC83, 12U7/ECC82 and 12AT7/ECC81 and other tubes with same pinouts as 12AX7 in ECC88/6DJ8 amps. USD$28/each.

2nd link suits: Universal OCTAL socket saver for all tubes with OCTAL bases like EL34, 6550, KT88, GZ34, 6SN7/6SL7, 6V6, 6L6, 5881, GZ32, 5Y3, 5V4 ETC. USD$38/each

@dwbasement Hey Dennis, here are my favourite 45's. The famous RCA UX245 balloon-shaped tube:
