SNA - what a community!

Featured Replies

I had the most remarkable experience last evening, which was repeated slightly differently, this morning.

As many of you will know, I yesterday listed my Harbeth 30.1's for sale for various reasons completely unrelated to how they sound; suffice to say the family is going through abit of a rough patch at the moment and it may be I could use the money.

Last night a member, who I know, offered to buy my 30.1's on the condition I store them for him until I could buy them back off him. Which is of course a kind way of saying - 'here is 5k if you need it mate - pay me back when you can.' He has asked to remain anonymous.

I was and remain deeply touched. Of course I will try and avoid 'selling' him my 30.1's - but knowing I can ask if I need to is a great comfort. Talk about taking some pressure off.

This morning unrelated directly to the 30.1 listing I had a great mate, also an SNA member incidentally, offer to drop some $$$ in my account till I got back on my feet. Again extraordinary generosity.

Again it isn't something I would do unless I had to, but gosh, what kindness to show to a friend.

To both gentleman I say a big

Of course, the alternative explanation is that they are both incredulous that I have found a speaker I am actually happy with, and don't want to risk another glitch in the matrix. Either way, its a bloody decent thing to do for a mate, and I am very, very grateful.

Says a lot about your character and reputation.

Just because I have been talking about them/got a quote for some newies.

Some great people out there.

It is a great community - part audio, part mens shed, part merciless ribbing and black humour, part kindness and all for the most part free of the conflict that besets the other forums - due in no small part to the appointment of some tough moderators by Marc (& Keith if memory serves me) back in the day and an early intervention approach to moderation now. I think all the moderators are doing a terrific job btw.

Thanks mate. Greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of self-centred people around who only care about themselves. It's great to hear this is not always the case @@Andrew S.

I too think we have a wonderful community here with some really great people.

In recent times I have been through a bit of a rough patch too with problems with work and finances and then to top things off my car broke down with an expensive bill attached. Thankfully a SNA member (unnamed as well, such a shy bunch at SNA....) lent me his car and really saved me big time. To say I'm grateful is very much an understatement. Thanks again to that particular member.

It's always a fantastic thing to help each other out. :)

I wish you all the best Andrew and hope you get through this rough patch quickly. :)

Thank you Martin, I appreciate the good wishes. Funnily enough, they say it is darkest before the dawn, and hopefully that dawn isn't far away from us now. Things are on the up I am sure.

Absolutely, things will work out in the end.

For me I've started a job which I'm hopeful about, and while I've moved backwards a fair way financially the new job while less money hopefully will supply some stability and also provide the benefit of more time outside work to enjoy life and concentrate on other pursuits.

Things are heading towards fine for me and I'm sure they will for you too. :)

While I can't say the last 6 months has been easy it's still important to remember that there are a lot of people who are in a much worse position than I have been in.

My friends have been absolutely invaluable.

I'm sure the occasion will arise when someone else needs help and I'll be more than happy to give back.

Great to hear Marty. Thanks for posting ;)

That's really good news Andrew. Hope things start turning around for you real soon.

As you say an extraordinarily generous offer but I have to say I'm not too surprised. I've seen it happen a number of times over the years I've been part of SNA. It's a great community to belong to.

I would also like to extol the generosity of many members on here - I've hardly ever had to actually drive to a GTG due to a general lack of self control and desire to have a good time !   :hiccup

I intend to payback in any way I can - probably by way of having plenty of GTG's here, and very rarely - - - - -

Here here. Or is it hear hear. Anyway yes. This is a great forum which provides friendship support information and the opportunity to learn more and more about this silly hobby that we share. Wouldn't be without it for quids.

That's awesome. I bought a Les Paul from a guy a couple of years back. It was cheap and I asked the guy why and he explained a similar situation. I have had to sell my prized possessions before so I offered him that if he got on his feet he could have it back. 2 years went by and earlier this year he messaged me ask if my offer was still valid and if not he would understand. Obviously he had been thinking about the guitar that got away for the past 2 years. I have made a deal that if he can make it happen he has 6 months and can have it back for what I paid.

I am glad to see that this happens elsewhere and is a reason, like others, why I am glad I found this community also. You're a bunch of great people.

Well Gentleman,

I am back home after my internal nip & tuck, and all in all feeling much better than what I thought I would at this time, although of course I am a little sore and am very, very tired. The GA banged me about abit, as anticipated, and the anaesthetist had the usual amount of bed side manner they are re-known for ie none. She was however very adept making me unconscious in record time, and inducing amnesia of the entire event pre being wheeled into my room and tossed into a bed. Bless. The surgeon I chose did the job, and so it appears to me, very competently indeed. Not that I can judge these things, but if the hushed tones and reverence of all the staff were anything go by, he appeared to be someone well regarded by his peers and subordinates, which is always a litmus test.

St Vinnie's Private was a pleasant enough experience, food aside (God why is hospital food so bad?) and the nurses, with one exception, were all extraordinarily kind and helpful with terrific senses of humour.  The one exception, however, was beastly. I wondered if I had offended her in some way (I quickly dismissed that from consideration of course - as if I could do such a thing), as try as I might, I didn't get a glimmer of a smile in the couple of days we had to endure each other. In any event I am glad I had the foresight to bring along some pain relief of my own, and not offer it up when asked, as being solely on her 'to the second' timed regime produced far more discomfort that I needed to have. There is sensible and then there is plain sadism.

After I posted this thread I had a number of very kind souls who I know who came forward with their hands in their pockets offering to help out if needed and other PMs equally well received offering individual best wishes.

I am absolutely floored at the generosity of spirt and plain 'goodness' of the folk I meet on SNA. Perhaps I am allowing myself to see it more easily these days. Whatever it is, I am grateful. It balances the horror in the world we hear about on a daily basis, and the gives me some hope that despite the best efforts of the politicians, our little part of the world might actually become the utopia I hope it may for all, rather than the increasingly select few.

Suffice to say atm my wife and I are all good and haven't had to hit anyone up yet. Nor do I intend to  - I hate owing money with a passion, and if I won't borrow from a bank, I certainly wouldn't be exploiting a friendship in that way. But again it is really nice to know it is there, if needed. Really nice.

And again my sincere thanks to all,

Great to hear that Andrew. Funny story re nurse. When I spent my time at Mater Hosp, I ran into a chick from my high school who with a tiny little help from a plastic surgeon had transformed into such a cutie. Of course I got her number and tried hitting on her upon my discharge but was unsuccessful.

And then I broke up with my then girlfriend.

Glad the op went well Andrew. :)

Hope the recoveries quick and not too much pain.

What a great thread. For me, having started this site so many, many years ago with no expectation or any idea of what it may become, truly makes me proud. It would be nothing though without the members, and of course the moderators.

We have created a great community and it is up to all of us to continue the tradition, the culture and the spirit of what is and will be into the future.

Very glad also of the outcome for you @@Andrew S. :thumb:

Yes indeed we've all experienced our own "Nurse Ratched" :(
