  1. Interesting, i will have open up my 505 see what branc caps i have, I know the 2 large ones are nichicon, other smaller blues ones etc on the boards, not sure, do you specifically know which caps can influence the sound? Im very happy with treble and mid tone quality.
  2. Hi, im only using the phono imput, a mid 70s technics SL 1300, atvm95 cart, running through 70s B&W Dm4 speakers, nivce accurate speakers, maybe not known for a lot of bass. I like 60s, 70s, 80s rock, plus 50s, 60s jazz mostly, yes one day id like some good 3 way speakers, but can't fit large ones.
  3. Hi thanks for comment, I only really started this thread, as i keep reading on various forums how people keep saying how warm, rich etc sounding vintage Sansui amps can sound. Thus when mine was rebuilt, I too was expecting this sort of sound, and yes its sound crisp, clean and more than acceptable, I'm not sure it say it has depth and definition in the bass tone..that warm rich sound, yes i do get more than enough bass if i turn up the bass tone control to about 4 o clock on the dial. Maybe the 505 is not known as an especially warm sansiu? By comparing my late 80s nad 3020e ( not the best in that series) seems to sound a little better?
  4. Hi thanks for comment, unfortunately I have no other Sansui amp to compare mine with, yes at low volumes i sometimes put loudness on. My other amp is a late 80s NAD 3020e, it seems to sound a bit richer, but then again i currently have both amps playing through different branded speakes and different record players..so yet again hard to compare. I don't have experience with hi end expensive gear re your Alpha .
  5. Hi all, thanks for all your comments, the Sansui Au 505 is sounding better, or Im getting used to it . However if any members have a good working 505 and live in southern Sydney or the Illawarra, it would be great to bring over my amp and do a sound comparison? Let me know? Cheers.
  6. Hi interesting, yeah mine now sounds pretty good ( although I have no otherAu505 to compare it with ) .Do you have other Sansui amps ? If so how do they sound compared to the 505? Cheers
  7. Hi EV cali, yes im aware those headshells are known for their bad connections, interestingly even with the headshell removed, the hum/ buzz continues? I might turn the TT upside down and investigate where the earth wire is connected. Other than that Im slightly stumped. Cheers
  8. Hi all, I have a Dual 1216 making a buzz thats audible through the speakers , that is noticeable as you turn up the volume , now some of you may say all TT make some buzz, but in comparison my Technics Sl 1300 is very quite. Further info is the buzz is louder if I touch the metal tab on the headshell ( buzz is there with or without the cartridge fitted ) it somewhat reduces if I touch the metal base. There is an earth wire , which is attached to amp ( nad 3020e ) , plus it get louder if my cd player is plugged in. Is this a group loop issue? Do all Duals of this type have this to some degree, or could it be fixed to be relatively quite like my Technics? Im sure its simple fix, just need some help. Cheers .
  9. Thanks thats probably something I will do anyway, as my bonded elliptical stylus is starting to show slight signs of wear.
  10. Thanks Tal, yes Im enjoying the Empire, it has great specs ( maybe depending on which original stylus it had ) I think I will get a quality replacement stylus for it. Sadly original ones dont exsist much.
  11. Hi all, Im interested in knowing members ideas/ experiences with cartridges/stylus in combination with the Technics direct drive SL series of turntables from the 1970s. What sounded good, what didnt work so well? I have SL 1300 mk1 , my understanding is this has a medium mass tonearm of around 17grms ( do all the direct drive Technics of the 1970s have a similar tonearm ? ) 2nd hand this TT came with a Empire 2000e III ( with unknown light blue stylus ) , this sounds pretty good, certainly quite bassy, with wide sound stage ( possibily lacking a bit in midrange ) I also have a ATVM95e ( also pretty good, obviously less soundstage than Empire, but maybe better in the midrange) and a " thorens" rebranded At91 or 3600 , I know this is a cheap cartridge but it sounds surprisingly lively! . I'm open to ideas of upgrades, but only justify low to medium priced carts, even open to buying old 2nd hand ones , Shure M91ed or such, or AT120e or newer VM540 series. Over to you guys.
  12. Hi thanks for info, yes I do like the sound on the cart , its has a good wide soundstage. Im thinking a Jico replacement, I don't really want muck around with cheaper one, unless ppl know of a good one ( or you) cheers
  13. Hi all, I have a Empire 2000e II cartridge, Im open to ideas for good replacement stylus's for this cart. I know Tonar make a few, plus various others, plus some from LP gear ( although they don't state who actually makes the stylus ) Also the original Empire stylus's were 0.2mm by 0.7mm, but seems most now are 0.3 m does this matter? I have seen on German online shop called Mr Stylus that has suitable ones ( 0.2) these are gold in colour , does any know of them? as there again there is now actual info on who actually makes their stylus. I currently have a light blue stylus( no brand on it, could be Empire? ) which sounds pretty good, but I don't know how old it is ( came with a 2nd hand Technics SL 1300 Mk1 ) I like the overall sound . Happy for advice.
  14. Hi all, say just putting it out there, but I'd love to do a side by side comparison with someone who owns a Sansui Au 505 or even a Au 101 ( assume they sound very similar) Im in the Wollongong area of NSW. cheers
  15. Hi David, if you message me I have the contact who fixed my amp. cheers
  16. Hi all, interestingly I played a Cd today through my NAD 538 , being Pink Floyds Dark side of the moon, I must admit it sounded pretty good, with adequate bass, I the real test is swapping in the NAD 3020e , see the comparison. btw thanks for all your comments.
  17. hi Alan, thanks for informing, lot to unpack there. just to clarify, I had the Sansui repaired as it was making very bad crackle sounds from one channel, anyway it was confirmed to be some failing small transistors, the technician said lots of them has corroded legs which then crack the main body of the transistor leading to issues of electricity passing through the plates ( not that I remember all his words) but its causes the static/ crackles, I think he replaced some of the caps ( not sure if they had failed or were going to?) maybe it was done as a prevention. cheers
  18. Hi yes the small transistors were replaced, that's what was the initial problem, lots of crackle, some of the transistors had failed, so the repairer renewed all of them, plus some of the caps! cheers for you comment.
  19. Hello David, well I juts had my amp ( same one) serviced in Sydney in Marrickville, by a long standing repairer that is few doors down from Apollo HiFi. The only thing and Im not sure if this an issue with all Hi Fi repairers it took approx one year! as he said there was a world wide shortage of electronic parts or whoever he gets his parts from.
  20. Hi Batmaqn, thanks for comment, yes unfortunately the large caps were replaced, I have played a lot of different music on it, not overly bassy. I have a NAD 3020e that seems more bassie .
  21. Hi muon, I know the 2 large caps are nichicons ( don't know exact values) as the rest haven't looked. Ok I didn't know about axing caps and bloated bass. I do get adequate bass if I turn the bass knob up. anyway will see how it goes. From your experience does bias have any bearing on tonal quality? thanks
  22. Hi all, I have just had my Sansui AU 505 recapped and all small transistors renewed . I was told by the repairer to wait at least 20 hrs for the capacitors to break in, he mostly said the treble will roll off a bit. My real question to members here, is that although the amp now sounds nice and clean ( only played about 14 hrs so far), there seems to be a slight lack of bass tone ( although I never had the luxury of knowing how this amp would sound when new) . Will there be more bass tone as the amp settles down? or is this something to do with setting the bias? or the type/ brand of caps used ( the 2 large ones are nichicons) I guess I'm asking what components within an amp effect the bass tone? btw this is with tone controls set at zero. cheers.
  23. Hi wartman, you might have some knowledge on this , as guy in Melbourne says he has a spare 1019 motor, but my understanding looking online is although that motor resembles the 12 19/29 motor they are the same, would there be any way to make it work? I think issue is turntable speed, as the 1019 has a smaller ilder wheel , and the motor pulley would be different, but im open to ideas.
  24. Hi , no this is pretty terminal, unfortunately in separating the motor halves ( which i had successfully done before ) the actual rotor shaft snapped . It was meant to be a fun project as this 1229 i bought as non running TT, i was getting close, however the ring magnet on the rotor was loose on 1st motor inspection, was also wanting to re oil the bearings. Well kinda all gone south now.
  25. Hi all, trust this posting is in the right place? I require either a rotor or a whole motor for a Dual 1229, or 1219. They seem hard to come by, couple in USA, but due to covid almost impossible to ship here. Anyone have spare Dual parts in Australia? Any help appreciated.
