Hi, I am a long time dabbler in hi-fi, mostly lower end coz I am too cheap. I note that due to my long dabbling I have *accidently* become a vintage hi-fi collector.
I would say I am entering my 3rd stage of hi-fi. At the moment I have 2 set-ups in 2 rooms, the main room has my pride and joy Pioneer amp SA-8500, Paradigm satellites and 1 of my original speakers, JVC that has a 12" bass cone set as a passive sub. I detached the mid and high drivers and wired the speaker across the left and right channels. Note sure where I got this idea from but seems ok.
This is only connected to a smart TV, so listen to music on Youtube, stream from computer etc and live and recorded TV. I have a Dual turntable but no room to attach it/place to put it neatly (wife issues). I recorded most albums onto hard disk, but I would like to get my turntable out again.
Other room I have a Cambridge audio amp, older Polk mid size stand speakers and the other JVC speaker set up the same way. I have a dead Harmon Kardon CD player, have to listen to CD music through a DVD player.
So, my thinking now, is to set up a 2.1 system, with in-wall speakers. I see Polk make some and even B&W, so they must be OK, right? Any opinions on whether I should avoid?
I am struggling with whether to have a multi channel receiver or a stereo amp. Can you run a proper, ie powered sub-woofer, from a stereo amp output? My perusing on here suggests better music repro from stereo amp, true?
Any thoughts or comments gratefully received, cheers, Funky Pecker.
