Hi Everyone.
My receiver recently died and I'm looking to get a new one, unfortunately, work conditions have got tough of late and so i'm a lot more budget concious than I would have once been. Basicly I want to go as cheap as possible, but still get as much bang out of my existing equipment as possible.
My previous amp was a Yamaha RX-V3800...but i'm considering jumping to a new brand, firstly because I can't afford any of the new models in that class, and also because I'm gone through a few Yamaha amps pretty fast.. I know they have a good rep, but to be honest I've been a bit underwhelmed. My thinking is if i'm going to have to replace it often anyway, might as well have a cheaper model to start with...no point paying for build quality that isn't there. But maybe that's harsh!
Anyway...so my setup is Running 7.1 (or I guess it's really a simulated 9.1 if you add in the 'presence' speakers the Yamaha had but i'm not too fussed)
The power requirements of my speakers are:
Maximum Load: 400 watts
Nominal Load: 140 watts
Ohms: 6
So i've been looking at the Onkyo options out there.
Seems I can get a 508 for about $750 or a 608 for about $1300
If I understand the manuals online, (got a bit mixed up with the different ohms and international versions) but I think the
Onkyo 508 has a nominal rating of 130w per chanel. and the 608 has a nominal rating of 150w per channel at 6ohms.
My questions are:
1. Is it bad for the speakers/amp to nominally overpower or underpower by a figure of 10w like that? Last thing I want to do is damage my speakers cos I can't afford new ones. Likewise the longer the amp lasts the better so don't want to unduely stress anything out. Basicly - I can't seem to find a straight answer on what the risks would be if any...or if it's worth me spending nearly double to avoid slightly underpoweing it or if the overpower is just as bad.
2. If both those amps suck...what is the best thing I could get for speakers of those ratings within a similar buget? I tend to watch bluray on projector via HDMI, not fussed about 3d or anything as the projector isn't capiable. But i do try and have everything else as nice as possible...DTS-MA etc.
Thanks so much for any help, I'm really bad at understanding the power ratings and stuff and it all blows my mind.
