  1. This may have not been a BeyonWiz bug, it's possible that the channel incorrectly broadcast the date (this used to happen frequently to Topfield users). I don't know exactly how time is setup on the BeyonWiz so I could be wrong
  2. No not really, newer hard drives are generally more efficient anyway. I have an original (as in first 100 in Australia) Topfield 5000, and I put in a 200GB drive and it works without any problems. Your primary concern should be about heat rather than power. Your second concern is probably about HDD noise.
  3. Several people have mentioned in this thread (and others on the beyonwiz) that the device already exists in the harmony database.
  4. I'm still happy with mine, I checked the lamp hours and we are up to 3900... Not bad for a 2.5 year old TV! I only paid $2k or so for mine, so if it dies in another 2-3 years, I'll happy replace it with something newer/bigger/better
  5. yellow cables are better... Seriously though, it doesn't really matter what is better, just use the one you want to use - spend as much or as little as you want. It's your money to spend! I use optical - because the shop was all out of short coax, do I care? No So far, none of my friends have come over and said "dude, your optical setup sux, you should replace it with a $300 coax"
  6. Hi wirrunna, you should be able to access the bios and turn off the "boot on error" checking to something like "halt on all but keyboard" typically it is in the "standard" bios settings.
  7. Wow - it's finally here? Ok.. we need some first impressions
  8. As I said - create a non-gaming HTPC thread and go nuts, the subject here is: New Brand Stb/pvr To Lead The Way, BeyondWiz I absolutely promise I will not jump into that thread and post about the BeyondWiz Both times that I have commented about off-topic HTPC comments, I have had agreement from people that this thread should be about the BeyondWiz product - NOT HTPC's. Back on to the beyondwiz topic though eh? Does anyone know if Jackie reads this forum? I'll send her(?) an email today asking for an update.
  9. It'd be great if we could avoid the HTPC discussion in this thread. Has anyone heard from Jackie lately?
  10. I got my SR604 from WOW - JB Hifi were also selling them, so try your luck with other retailers
  11. Well if they need someone to test in the Brisbane area get them to send me a PIM I am serious, I have done extensive testing before on all manner of products (mainly software though). Maybe I should email "jackie" ?
  12. Hmmm I have the 880 and it works fine with the Topfield, I think it is/was in the database? It is at least under my profile when I check my logitech login.
  13. I just remembered, I created a similar thread about 2.5 years ago: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=10351
  14. I have some B&W and Aaron in-ceiling speakers. Both are pretty good but I do believe the B&W sound better.
  15. To be truthful, I am more concerned about my acceptance factor. I have worked in IT for 18 years and I honestly cannot be bothered with fighting a PC for my entertainment. If someone wants to create a HTPC -vs- Appliance thread by all means create it and we can duke it out there! The beyonwiz appeals to me as it seems to address pretty much all of my requirements I really want to give it a bash, as my topfield (which was one of the first 200 in Australia) is getting a bit old. Can't wait until people post their first impressions
  16. Any news on this thing? As much fun as a HTPC sounds like *sarcasm* I am looking for an appliance to replace my toppy 5000!!
  17. Packed bitrate issues usually show in the video portion of the file rather than the sound (from my experience). As far as "how do I use MpegModifier?" you run the program, load the file you wish to check for "packed bitrate" and then if it shows that it is packed, you tick the box that says "unpack" and then click the save button. Problems with audio is something I've never had to worry about
  18. divx and xvid are both Mpeg4 codecs. Typically there should be no difference in playback. One thing which does catch out certain DVD DivX players is what's called "packed bitrate" which can be removed from most mpeg4 (divx or xvid) via a free and easy to get tool called Mpeg Modifier
  19. My in-laws are looking at getting a combination DVD recorder/VCR Recorder. The most recent catalogue has Samsung, LG & Panasonic. Does anyone have any experience with these products or a different brand that has the same features. The RRP on these is about $500... Yes I know they don't have digital tuners (wouldn't that be great). Any thoughts are welcome.
  20. There has previously been a bit of talk on this exact model: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=20656&st=0 It seems they are fairly popular in other forums, I don't know of anyone yet that has had a problem. It's my first LG product, and I am enjoying it, I can watch it from 8m away
  21. Ok, I went looking for the curve last night, and yes it is visible when you are watching 4:3 content. It is most visable right at the top of the screen and the bottom. I would say the curve is around 2-3mm (I didn't measure it). Would I have bought the set had I seen this first? Yes I still would have.
  22. Viewing angles are pretty good. My mates wife was watching it from about a 60 degree angle as she was talking and didn't move to get a better picture. You are right, horizontal viewing (left/right) is better than vertical (up/down). Mine is probably setup maybe 20cm higher than I would like, but it doesn't seem to bother me. It's probably very dependant on how far away you sit.
  23. I own one of these, and have a couple of comments: 1) I have a very bright lounge room with glare from 3 angles (really sux) this TV is fine. Sure there are some glare problems, but they will be there with any display I buy. The anti-glare screen does a great job. I have watched shows during the brightest part of the day, and it's fine. 2) "Horror Stories" I am of the belief that for every 1 person that complains there are many more who don't. Every manufacture has faults (aka DOA's). I had never bought an LG product before (well I am exluding the goldstar alarm clock). But I bought mine with a 3 year warranty for an extra $99. If it lasts that long, I will be bloody happy considering I "only" paid $2200 for it. As I don't intend on moving it, I expect it will probably last me 3-5 years. To tell you the truth, I expect no more from pretty much any appliance these days (depressing to some I suppose) 3) Remanufactured is/was a new word for me, the TV seems 100% new. 4) Banding with 4:3 - I haven't noticed, but I haven't looked for it. I run mine via a topfield 5000 -> onkyo receiver -> TV (all via component). It looks a treat - DVD's look better than SD Digital TV I think. I have no idea if there is a service menu with geomatry adjustments. I will have a look at the normal menus tonight to see if it has them. 5) Rainbow - maybe I am lucky, but I don't notice it. 2 other people have bought this TV after seeing mine (**** I wish I was on commission) and also haven't noticed rainbows 6) If you are interested but still have doubts then be sure to see one hooked up properly (I looked at it in 3 stores before I bought). In my case Clive Peters at Macgregor in Brisbane had it setup the best. Shame about the wanker salesman - but he wouldn't budge on price so I bought it elsewhere. 7) If you can get this TV for $2000 holy crap am I amazed. 8) I can watch this TV from 8 meters away and still enjoy it. My normal viewing distance is 3m. For the price it really is sensational.
