  1. Regardless of cost a good system is a good system.

The room influences how that good system sounds more than anything. But just because I can't afford a brilliant system I am not going to try and find fault with it.

End game amps, speakers and sources just work. And the sound that they deliver can be confronting. And because it costs a lot doesn't necessarily mean it is not balanced or perform at a level that I can't appreciate...it's more likely I just can't afford it.

Every little improvement I have made in my system has been based on somethingI have heard, something I can afford and something that makes the sound more real, more identifiable to me and hopefully towards a balance and synergy that just makes me smile.

    Enjoy the journey

  2. Guys, interesting because in my system, I have found IC's make a slight difference so my OCD decideds that, power cables make bugger all if any difference but speaker cables are a significant tuning tool.

I have found similar  regarding power associated upgrades Darren. I spent too much money on different additions at the start of tuning my system and most of those have now been removed now.

Interconnects and speaker cables have been the main evolution and it has been a gradual progression. I think those small incremental changes lately have been probably made possible by changing amplifiers along the way.

  3. I have mentioned the success I have been having with the KLEI range of cables.

I have the just released zPurity8 SC's in now and are my favourite and end game speaker cables.

I am also running quite a few of the interconnects with my Conrad Johnson ET5 as can be seen below. I have tried most of the Nordost range and other brands, but for resolution and musicality in my system, these are streets ahead.

  4. David Bowie Black Star vinyl has had all sorts of prices. Very high prices on ebay and Discogs, but you can buy it at JB's for less than $50.

But I agree with Cliff, those last sold prices are the most relevant, but still only a guide.

Retail shops buying collections, offer very low prices, for complete collections, considering the sorting, cleaning and stocking they have to do.

  5. Reh heh heh heeeaaalllllyy???

Very interesting Robster, will investigate. Thanks, love that kind of info.

what about @Bris Vegas who shall be 'buried with his Valhallas? No comment yet?

@Mr. 57 whats not to like about a 'firm dose of raised hair'? Hahaaa!

Definitely try before you buy, if you can Darren, had the Valhallas at my place for a week, wasn't the best solution for my system and room.

  6. Yes I agree Mr T.

Once you have settled on components and they are delivering sound quality that you like and you are familiar, than it doesn't hurt anyone to try fine tuning your system with some tweaks.

And that can include cables. And if you hear something that improves the experience for you and you can afford it, go for it.

There has been a steady evolution in my system and cables have been part of it.

    Cheers

  7. With all things it is system and room dependant in the end and you listen for balance and synergy.

I went on a bit of an amp hunt and have trialled a lot, SS, valve hybrid and $12000 valve mono blocks and in the end the best sound was from a modest, but well built SS amp. About roughly 1/10 the cost of my DIY speakers.

So there's no rules, go with what you like and what you can afford.
