Hand-assembled in Yokohama, Japan, by cartridge specialists at Excel Sound, Oriole continues Sumiko’s preference for traditional Japanese craftsmanship paired with modern generator design. The company describes it as a meaningful step up from Songbird, aimed at listeners seeking greater resolution and refinement without moving fully into its top-tier offerings.
Central to Oriole is a nude Shibata line-contact stylus (6.5 × 40µm) mounted on a 0.5mm reinforced aluminium pipe cantilever, coupled to high-purity copper coils and a low-impedance generator. Output is rated at 0.3mV, with 5.5Ω internal impedance, positioning it squarely in low-output MC territory and suggesting careful system matching will be key.

Sumiko’s familiar open-architecture Reference Series design is also central to the Oriole concept. Rather than enclosing the generator in a conventional body, the design aims to control resonance by damping it internally before directing remaining energy through the mounting plate and headblock, and into the tonearm for dissipation. The approach is intended to minimise colouration while preserving what Sumiko characterises as a natural, fatigue-free tonal balance.
On the spec sheet, Oriole weighs 7.3 grams, tracks between 1.8g and 2.2g (with 2.0g recommended), and claims a 12Hz–45kHz frequency response. Channel separation is quoted at 30dB, with channel balance held within 0.5dB at 1kHz. As expected for a moving-coil design, there is no user-replaceable stylus, though Sumiko continues to offer a cartridge exchange programme in select markets.

Pricing has yet to be formally confirmed, but based on early indications, the Oriole is expected to land in the US$1,500–1,700 range, placing it firmly in the competitive mid-to-upper MC cartridge segment. We'll update with pricing and availability as soon as we have further information.

In positioning and intent, Oriole appears designed to bridge the gap between accessibility and aspiration offering a taste of Sumiko’s higher-end Reference Series performance without the full Starling outlay.
