Quad 3 Integrated Amplifier Rocks Retro Cool & Modern Tech

The Quad 3 integrated amplifier may share some sixties chic, but it benefits from "cutting-edge" hi-res internals.

Quad 3 Integrated Amplifier

Revealed at the last High End Munich, the Quad 3 follows the 33/303 pre/power pairing (below). However, where the latter refreshed classic models from the 1960s, the new integrated borrows the same exterior style as its reimagined siblings via David McNeill's industrial design but boasts a thoroughly modern skill set.

The 101x3600x332mm [HxWxD] Quad 3 is powered by Class A/B amplification, delivering a quoted 65 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 100 wpc at 4 ohms. The amp's output stage uses a Quad's Complementary Feedback (CFB) topology, and the company states that this results in "superior linearity and excellent thermal stability." Meanwhile, independent low-noise power supplies are provided for each critical element for a more "detailed, expansive and expressive" sound.

A thoroughly modern ES9038Q2M Sabre chip brings the Quad 3 integrated amp bang up-to-date. Employing ESS Technology's 'HyperStream II' architecture and a bespoke jitter eliminator, the Quad 3 promises ultra-low noise and high dynamic range for a more expressive, involving listen.

Moreover, it means the amp can handle hi-res PCM files up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512 while full MQA decoding is on board, and the Quad 3 is certified as 'Roon Tested' for use in a Roon audio environment. Five filter settings are also offered to suit your given source material.

Digital connections include USB-B, coaxial and optical digital inputs, as well as an HDMI ARC port to bring your TV or home cinema setup into the game. Meanwhile, twin RCA inputs and a moving magnet phono input for vinylistas will cover your analogue sources.

For personal listening, the new Quad's amp features a 6.3mm headphone output, while Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX HD codec support is available for those who prefer to stream wirelessly and open up the playlist choices to friends and family.

On the front panel, there are four controls for selecting your source and adjusting your music to your preference, including bass tone, stereo balance control, and, of course, Quad's Tilt dial. These sit alongside a larger volume rotary control dial and a gloriously retro-tastic orange backlit horizontal LCD display.

The Quad 3 integrated will be available from mid-June, priced at £1,249 / €1,499 / AU$2,799.
