The storied British loudspeaker brand is readying an interesting floorstander that’s so new it is still being called by its development name, Lockwood Universal (XP5).

Lockwood Loudspeakers proclaims the new models are "modern classics — compact by design, uncompromising by nature, loudspeakers created for those who value authenticity, musical truth and timeless design."

The images that we have been treated to give us a glimpse of the XP5’s stunning aluminium side panels and integral stand, which also features 19mm Birchwood sealed cabinets. This is all handmade by Lockwood in Hamilton, Scotland.

Meanwhile, the XP5’s 5-inch point-source doped-paper driver unit hints at the loudspeakers’ room-friendly dimensions. The new drivers benefit from an alnico magnet system and are custom-made by the highly respected Volt loudspeakers.

At the time of publication, we’ve been informed that the crossover has just been signed off and that the XP5 is sounding “beautifully musical”.

We are told that the XP5 has a sensitivity rating of 88 dB.

The new Lockwood Loudspeakers model sports a custom brushed-aluminium terminal plate with Lockwood pure-copper binding posts. The company will offer custom finishes, including Pantone colours, with paint-to-sample as a special-order option.

The XP5 floorstander will eventually be joined by a bookshelf sibling that will share the same drive unit.

We are looking forward to hearing the Lockwood Universal (XP5), or whatever its production name turns out to be, at The Bristol Hi-Fi Show, 20-22 February 2026.
