Announced this week in Amsterdam, the new lineup includes the JBL Live Buds 4, Live Beam 4 and Live Flex 4, each designed around different fit preferences while sharing a common feature set built around JBL’s updated Smart OS 3.0 platform.

While the earbuds themselves receive refinements to drivers, call quality and ANC processing, the bigger story may once again be JBL’s increasingly distinctive Smart Charging Case, a feature that continues to separate the company from rivals including Apple, Sony and Bose.

Originally introduced with earlier JBL Live and Tour models, the touchscreen-equipped charging case returns here with a larger display and redesigned interface. Users can swipe through notifications, adjust EQ settings, skip tracks or customise shortcuts directly from the case itself, without needing to unlock a connected smartphone.

JBL says the updated Smart OS 3.0 software also allows users to personalise the interface with custom wallpapers and reorganised home-screen widgets, further pushing the case beyond simple battery-status duties.

HARMAN’s President of Consumer Audio, Carsten Olesen, says the company sees the Smart Charging Case as a key part of making increasingly feature-heavy earbuds easier and more intuitive to use:

As earbuds and headphones become more feature-rich it is important that this doesn’t impact the user experience. Since we first introduced the Smart Charging CaseTM four years ago, we have used the industry-leading technology to continue innovating – first with the SMART Tx, and now with the refined user interface – to allow a more seamless experience than ever. JBL Live 4 marks an important next step in this journey, and we are very excited to continue driving audio innovation.

JBL says the Live 4 range has been retuned with new high-fidelity drivers aimed at delivering punchier bass and greater clarity across music playback. The company is also promising stronger active noise cancellation, with updated adaptive processing designed to better reduce background distractions whether you’re listening to music, podcasts or taking calls on the move.

Voice call quality also receives attention through what JBL calls “Perfect Call 2.0”, combining a six-microphone array, wind-noise management and an AI-trained processing algorithm designed to reduce common background noises, including traffic, fans and sudden environmental sounds.

The three models target slightly different users and fit preferences. The Live Beam 4 adopts a sealed in-ear stem design with silicone ear tips, while the Live Flex 4 opts for a more open-fit outer-ear approach similar to Apple’s non-Pro AirPods. The Live Buds 4 sit somewhere between the two with a more compact in-ear shape.

The release also highlights how the earbuds market is evolving beyond simple sound quality battles. Brands are competing on usability, software features and how seamlessly products fit into everyday life. JBL’s touchscreen-equipped smart case still feels like a distinctive point of difference in the category, particularly as most rivals continue to rely almost entirely on smartphone apps for control and customisation.

Buyers will also have no shortage of colour choices, with the Live Beam 4 and Live Flex 4 arriving in Black, Blue, Green, Silver, Orange, Purple and Sand finishes because, well, apparently fewer than seven options simply wasn’t enough! The Live Buds 4 keeps things slightly more restrained with Black, Blue, Silver and Sand variants.

All JBL Live 4 models are expected to be available shortly through JBL’s global channels, priced at €199.99 with regional pricing still emerging.
