Further Information

I bought the empty boxes and crossovers with a view to repopulate them with appropriate drivers of my choosing. Being a fan of simple first order crossovers I didn’t use the Arcus-designed originals, but voiced these speakers according to my taste, which is for clean full-range sound. I Iike to hear the metallic parts working in percussion, the clear bell-like top notes of a piano, and the deep bass offered by acoustic double bass in the hands of a master like Neils Pederson, Ray Brown or the wonderful Red Mitchell on those albums where he shares the stage with just one other, a guitarist like Joe Pass or Jim Hall.

These cabinets are more complex than they might appear. The bass is enhanced by a folded transmission line design ending in a slotted port. The midrange has its own tubular internal enclosure. The tweeter is supplemented by a ribbon, which in my version acts as a super tweeter with just a 1uf cap. I note that on the Fine Arts Only website they say that when looking at secondhand units for sale the original ribbons and tweeters are often not working!

So what have I used in these ones? The all-important 10” bass drivers are by Peerless, the midrange are Infinity, while the soft dome tweeter is by SEAS - and the no-name ribbons are ex ebay, fine for the job, and not those original accident prone ones. The original crossovers will come as part of the package, as well as grilles which have seen better days. Still useful at times to keep little kids at bay – but the speakers will always look more impressive without grilles. Yes, they are a bit dusty, but nothing terrible. Asking price is pretty much just the cost of drivers and other materials (and cabinets), but make a sensible offer if you want to.

Dimensions approx.: Height 110cm, width 31cm top, 38cm bottom. Depth same. Binding posts are single, not biwirable. I could modify for that if required, but a bit messy.

I’ve been running them off a Denon DRA-700AE receiver, which is rated at 80w into 8 ohms. They aren’t quite as good as my number one speakers - the Alon V - but nor are they as expensive!

I’ve included an extra publicity photo that show the Fine Arts family as it was, and one with a diagram of the internal structure.
