Diffuser recommendation

Featured Replies

Looking for some advice on some 2D Diffusers for a home theater. Looking for the ‘Skyline’ diffuser.

So far I have found the Vicoustic Multifuser DC2 https://lifestylestore.com.au/product/vicoustic-multifuser-dc2-box-of-6-diffusion/

and  Sonitus Acoustics Bigfusor

https://www.melbournehifi.com.au/collections/acoustic-treatment/products/sonitus-acoustics-bigfusor-i-acoustic-diffuser

There is quite a large price difference between them when considering white. Interested if there are performance differences between the two.

Thanks!

Are you sure about the price difference ?

The Vicoustic are for a box of 6.
The Sonitus are for a box of 3 so you need 2 boxes for same coverage.
Vicoustic provide performance specs, couldn’t find anything for Sonitus.
Sonitus looks like a copy made in Croatia.
There are other Australian companies making acoustic absorbers/diffraction products such as Soundacoustics.
I see they have a sale atm on their hybrid diffusers.

I'm not sure why you want 2D diffusers for your home theatre room - what level of indirect sound and at what frequencies with what delay?

I'd suggest before you start buying panels that you work out what it is you want to achieve - it gets rather expensive very quickly mainly because with both 1D and 2D panels, you need quite a few to be effective.

I have 4 of the Sound Acoustic HA 600-75s and they're quite effective but don't actually function as 2D diffusers - I mostly use the Tim Perry (Arqen Acoustics) leanfusers that are a simpler version of the Schroeder 1D diffusers

With the Multifusers, they're about 2ft square (600mm x 600mm) so 2 packets of 6 will assemble a pair at 1200 x 1800mm panels and this is just a start for say ceiling diffusion for example ...

Yes, the White Sonitus is $399 for a pack of 3, compared to $915 for a pack of 6 for Vicoustic.

Its a shame the Sonitus done have any information that I can find to see if they are a comparable product. Cant even find a review or comparison of them online.

At the moment I have DIY absorption panels at reflection points. My plan was initially to get these diffusion panels for the rear wall of my theatre to get rid of some of the absorption. Following that some DIY BAD panels for the first reflection point of the walls.

More than happy to take advise on what I should be looking at.

Thanks

Um, I'm not sure if I understand the requirements clearly - if it's mainly for Home Theatre (Video), the freq response, the damping and volume levels will be somewhat different for 'just music' use, but your mention of first reflection point BAD panels and rear wall diffusors are more for stereo music reproduction, if I've got that right.

The Skylines diffuse in all directions (2D) as you know but don't work as efficiently as the 1D diffusers - for multi-speaker AV use, most rooms are rather over damped and the extra channels used to 'fill up' the sound scenes so absorption is the requirement, not diffusion

As I mentioned, I think I've missed the boat here ...

From the pictures I can find of either of the examples - neither are based on a prime number - which is required for Quadratic Residue Diffusers (QRDs).

The Sonitas appears to be 12 x 12 - at best this in an N3 diffuser (3 being the highest prime multiple of 12)

The pictures of the Vicoustic product aren't clear enough to determine more than 1 axis which is 14 wells - assuming it's 14 x 14 wells, again not prime, but possibly N7 (7 being the highest prime multiple of 14).

Without any other data I would expect the Vicoustic product to provide more diffusion than the Sonitas product.

The science behind Quadratic Residue Diffusers (QRDs) requires a prime number of wells to generate diffusion - this is the case for 1 dimensional (1D) diffusers (like a cutlery drawer with different depths) and 2 dimensional (2D) diffusers like a city skyscraper skyline (hence the name "skyline").

Properly designed DIY 1D and 2D diffusers (eg using QRDude) are always based on prime numbers - because DIY implementation doesn't contravene patent law.

Commercial designs of QRDs that don't come from RPG (RPG own the patent for QRD diffusers) are mostly not prime as I can only assume they don't want to pay a fee to RPG, accepting that their products provide lower diffusion than a similar product based on a prime number.
