Brisbane restaurant suggestion

Featured Replies

Dear Brisbanians,

I will soon be visiting your city and will have a shot (potentially two) at a restaurant. Ortiga and Montrachet come highly recommended, but what do you people actually living in Brisbane reckon? Any steakhouse worth visiting? I'll travel with Elissa, so I guess ambient counts as well :)

Thanks for your suggestions! All the best!

If you like Greek / Meditaranian food try

Little Greek Taverna - West End

5 - 1 Browning St, West End

(07) 3255 2215

I second the vote for Ortiga. IF you want to go all out Esquire is really great as well, but certainly not cheap.

From when I had an expense account...if you REALLY want to impress...steak Cha Cha Cha is the BEST I know....seafood try Jellyfish (owned by the same person that owns Cha Cha Cha)....Aria is 5 star modern cuisine and all are in the Eagle St Pier section over looking the Brisbane River...this assumes you are staying in the city...more impressive than the Docklands area in Melbourne in my humble opinion...though I DO miss dining in Melbourne...Rob

Ortiga is good but never really wows me. Aria was boring, safe and the worst service I've had in Brisbane. Moda I always enjoy. Stokehouse is always good and interesting. Esquire is ok but don't expect the same standard as vue du mond. If you want something quirky try Tukka in west end, European with Aussie flavourings. Traditional italian enotecca in wooloongabba.

I've got lots more, depends on your price points. Montrachet is always great but not open at weekends.

We have been to Ecco a few times and is great for lunch

Moo Moos is also great for steak

Guys, thanks for the suggestions! I really wanted to go to Montrachet, but them not being opened on weekends rules the possibility out...

I really appreciate the Stokehouse tip! They don't come up on oogle, or I just didn't look hard enough, but their menu looks great... ;)

Moo Moo on Edward st, fantastic night spent there a couple of weeks ago. Shared a 1kg wagyu roast between 3 of us for main, $140 was value. Superb as expected. Went there in January and had a fab evening with friends, wasn't disappointed this time either.

My wife would love to go again if that helps

Mrs Prog and I had a really great meal at a place called Zafron about 3 weeks ago and followed it up the next night at Smoke. These 2 are both in New Farm about 500 metres from each other.

Xafron is a fusion of ethnic flavours from the Middle East while Smoke was great for ribs. (Ask for extra sauce)

I'd recommend Anise in Fortitude Valley. Small intimate venue, excellent wine selection and the best gnocchi I've ever tasted.

I second the opinions of others - Cha Cha Char for steak in the city.

…….. Aria was boring, safe and the worst service I've had in Brisbane. Moda I always enjoy…….

been to Aria several times and always enjoyed it but only at lunch as their set prices are reasonable - over the top for dinner for me.

went to Moda recently (always enjoyed it's pre-incarnation of Gianni's) with high hopes but was seriously let down - dry $45 wagyu, elastic quail entree made it a real chore to eat, wrong year of wine without telling me, they forgot my coat at end of night and never once checked on our pleasure with the food - 4 of us spent up big on wine and food as they have prices to match and I followed up with them afterwards - basically got patronised by the pompous all-knowing matre'de

an off night, one-off, whatever, but our friends felt similarly - never ever will Moda see me again, but they get some good reports like yours - YMMV

could try Reserve at Milton - they produce delectable but rich food, a great steak (some of the best I have eaten), have a lovely bar upstairs overlooking the river double glazed for road noise with live music on weekend evenings, and Stephen has an excellent taste for and stocked wine cellar

one of the few remaining decent and long serving BYOs is Baguette at Ascot, if you have the time and can get around

Gambaros on Caxton Street at Petrie terrace is good for seafood but not cheap.

Love their Crab Bisque (used to be Lobster). UPDATE  - they seem to have deleted this from their menu - pity.

You could visit Caxton Street Audio further up the road first (if you are brave enough). ;)
