Capn Stoobie Posted December 17, 2021 Posted December 17, 2021 I currently have a Panasonic AE8000 projector, Yamaha RX-V673 receiver and a 5.1 speaker system. Having just purchased an Epson TW9400 to replace the AE8000, I realise it is time to upgrade the receiver to get the benefits of HDR (and more modern audio formats). Can anyone recommend a new receiver?
bizzibee Posted December 18, 2021 Posted December 18, 2021 (edited) If you want to stick with Yamaha the RX-V6A (replacement for the RX-V6xx Series), supports 7.2 Channels if you want to move up to 7.2 channels for say Dolby Atmos & DTS:X in a 5.2.2 speaker config. Your existing Yamaha RX-V673 supports 7.2, but it doesn't look like you have that many speakers in your current system. https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/rx-v6a/index.html If you're looking to save some money on the purchase, you could consider a Authorised Yamaha Refurb RX-V2085 for $1549 which has 9.2 channels which would give you a Dolby Atmos & DTS:X speaker config up to 7.2.2 or 5.2.4. See: https://www.excelhifi.com.au/yamaha-rx-v2085-refurbished.html Anyway, have a look here: https://www.radioparts.com.au/category/consumer-electronics/amps-receivers/av-receivers https://www.selby.com.au/electronics/receivers-and-amplifiers/home-theatre.html Denon, Marantz, Pioneer & Onkyo have models that support 4K and Dolby Atmos & DTS:X which would suit your needs as well. Thanks bizzibie, I'll look into those. There's such a wide range of AVR's it is hard to get up to speed on the differences!

You're welcome! 21 hours ago, Capn Stoobie said: There's such a wide range of AVR's it is hard to get up to speed on the differences! Once you decide on your budget, and the number of speakers you want for Dolby Atmos / DTS:X, you can narrow down and determine if you need to buy a 7.2, 9.2 or 11.2 AVR. Some of this will be determined by the size of the room you are using. An AVR with 7 Amplified Channels with give you the option of having 5.2, 7.2 & 5.2.2 speakers. An AVR with 9 Amplified Channels with give you the option of having 5.2, 7.2, 5.2.2, 5.2.4 & 7.2.2 speakers. An AVR with 11 Amplified Channels with give you the option of having 5.2, 7.2, 5.2.2, 5.2.4, 7.2.2 & 7.2.4 speakers. Note: Some AVRs will have say 9 Amplified Channels, but can process 11 Channels. You just need to add an additional 2 channel amplifier for the two additional channels. Have a look at this Dolby Speaker Setup Guide here: https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/#gref Anyway, once you have determined a few of these things, you can come back and I'm sure everyone will provide you with any additional info and help you may need. All manufactures will have an AVR to suit your budget and needs. But you do need to know what you want first. You could also consider buying a used 4K AVR with Dolby Atmos & DTS:X which would give you more buying power to get an AVR with more Amplified Channels if these are needed but you don't have the budget to buy new. Can anyone recommend a new receiver? I should have mentioned that you might want to consider a Receiver that has more that one HDMI output in case you want to output video to you Epson TW9400, and TV and a display in another room. The Refurb Yamaha RX-V2085 does have three HDMI outputs, as does the Denon AVR-4500. https://www.excelhifi.com.au/yamaha-rx-v2085-refurbished.html Quote Three HDMI Outputs Since the RX-V2085 has three HDMI output terminals, simultaneous connection to the TV, LCD projector and other devices, is possible. Which means, for example, that you can use your TV as usual but use the projector for your favourite movies and special programming, or have the same main room content shown in other rooms as well — easily and without having to change any connections. Naturally, the built-in HDMI functionality is of the latest specifications, corresponding also to HDR (Dolby Vision Compatible, Hybrid Log-Gamma), 4K / 60p passthrough, 4K upscaling, and so on. There is a Refurb Denon AVR-X4500 on eBay for around the same price. See: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/224718995412?hash=item34524bbfd4:g:AjcAAOSwLfBhpXS~ There is also a Refurb Marantz SR7010 on eBay for around the same price. See: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/255134757690?hash=item3b6737733a:g:c8oAAOSw7PxhQCy0 So, if your looking for a 9.2 Channel AVR so you have the option of having 5.2, 7.2, 5.2.2, 5.2.4 & 7.2.2 speakers, with more than one HDMI output, you could consider both the Refurb Yamaha RX-V2085 and the Refurb Denon AVR-X4500. You could buy either new if you look around. But they are older models so finding stock might be an issue. The Denon AVR-X4500 & Marantz SR7010 can do 11 channel processing, so if you add another 2 channel Amp to either, you can have 7.2.4 speakers. Anyway, here is a features comparison between the Yamaha RX-V2085 and Denon AVR-X4500 AVRs. https://www.zkelectronics.com/compare/denon-avr-x4500h/usa/yamaha-rx-v2085/australia/ Here is a features comparison between the Denon AVR-X4500 and Marantz SR7010 AVRs. https://www.zkelectronics.com/compare/denon-avr-x4500h/usa/marantz-sr7010/usa/ I've used these Refurb AVRs as examples because each cost less than $2000 and provide 9 amplified channels. So there is provision to increased configured speakers over time if that is desired. I don't know your budget so these are blind recommendations. Buying new up to $2000 will limit you to mainly 7 amplified channels AVRs, which is why I've suggested these Refurb models that provide 9 amplified channels. If you're happy with 7 amplified running to a max of 5.2.2 speakers, then there are a number of AVRs under $2000 or just slight over. Edited December 20, 2021 by bizzibee

You just need to add an additional 2 channel amplifier for the two additional channels. That's what my RZ730 does, and one reason I bought it. If I had my time over I may have gotten something else. Any mid range AVR is so expensive though and mine cost $1300, which usually will only get you a 7 channel at best. In saying that, I currently have a 7.1.2 setup, and don't know if I'd be satisfied with 2 less channels. 5.1 is pretty good though, so it's hard to say. To the OP - I'd also consider how serious you're home theatre setup is/will be. You've got a TW9400, so it's pretty serious right there, but is it in a dedicated room? If so is it custom built to be a HT room? If yes, I'd say more channels the better. Even if it isn't a dedicated room (like mine), it's still nice to be able to have up to 9 or 11 speakers. If you can afford it, you might as well imo.

Another good piece of advice. My pj is in the same (lounge) room as my TV, so having 2 outs is essential really. I just switch between the 2 depending what I'm using. My AVR can do simultaneous output, but I think I had issues with that. All I know is, I select the one I'm using on the AVR.

It was set up during our house reno which was 7 years ago, so I can't remember if my installer ran extra cabling for more speakers in the future. I will need to call him!

Right, well that's another consideration, but I would go for it being a dedicated room. Wiring might be a pita, but more speakers get you closer to that real cinema feel imo. That AVR that @bizzibee posted is a great buy. I'd like it as it's probably better than my Onkyo, audyssey in particular, but I only bought mine within the last year. It does up to 11 channels with additional amp, so I think I won't be wanting more. A 7.2.4 system would be plenty. Anyway, iirc you're looking at serious money if you wanted to process more channels than 11.

Sorry I looked at that post again and realised @bizzibee linked several items. The Denon can be had for $1699 with code. If it doesn't say so under the item details, it must only be for ebay plus members, of which I'm doing a free trial and have saved a lot extra on recent purchases. edit: You can currently take $100 off either the Denon or Marantz. Possibly Yamaha too (I haven't checked). Boy I'm tempted to get the Marantz! If it wasn't for the fact that I've only had the Onk for 12 months or less... but the Marantz is far better probably. From what I gather, it can process up to 13 channels too, with extra amps. Edited December 23, 2021 by Esoterica

I did consider one of those, but I think my Yamaha RX-A3080 more than meets my needs. Which Marantz AVR were you considering? SR7010, SR7011 or SR7012? Esoterica Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 I was considering the 7010, but didn't realise there were others. Will have to sus it out 1
Capn Stoobie Posted December 25, 2021 Author Posted December 25, 2021 The Denon 4500 is not available now, just as I was deciding that it would probably suit my room. The Yamaha and Marantz are both too tall to fit my cabinet! At the moment my temporary solution is to use an HDMI splitter from the my Apple TV, with the 2 outputs going to the TW9400 and the Yamaha RX-V673. It is working fine for now, given that most of my viewing is via the Apple TV. At least that way I can get 4K HDR while still being able to use the receiver to run audio to the speakers.

Capn Stoobie Posted December 26, 2021 Author Posted December 26, 2021 Thanks Bizziebee, I actually decided to buy a new Yamaha RX-V6A (and ordered one this afternoon). It doesn't have as many channels as the Denons you mentioned, but it will do 5.2.2 which I think will be plenty for me. Thanks for all your advice, it has prompted a lot of research in the last few days! 1
bizzibee Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 All good mate. I'm sure you will be happy with the Yamaha RX-V6A if 5.2.2 is enough for you. Hopefully the research you have done has given you more understanding about everything. Sorry for the late reply. Had a busy day yesterday and today.
