Sunblock...To reconfirm I can mount any shared folders I want in SMB or NFS if I do the long way of adding them one by one in PCH, Dune or PC by typing the IP address, shared name etc. It is just that the network browser is not throwing out those shared folders. Pls see pictures. Thanks!

Desray...The only thing that changed in the last months was upgrade of PC Windows 8 and Synology numerous firmware, PCH firmware changes that I can recalled. No physical change to how I connect the network cables, gigabit hubs and cisco managed switch. Not sure if this is the culprit I have change the singtel router to myrepublic provided one Asus N56U. Thanks!

That's odd. Can you perhaps ensure that under the info services, the media services is running. This is actually meant for DLNA or UPnP but no harm do a check. I m using WDTV Live 2013 as my media server and I am also using synology NAS for media sharing via NFS.

Make sure the gateway is the same across all devices and the workgroup you specify is the same. This is more for SMB connection. For NFS, the only problem if any, will be related to the access rights provision between the NAS shared folder with NFS option enabled. Other than that, unless the source screws up, NFS should be readily available w/o much meddling

1) Yes DLNA is running and I can see those folders by default in Popcorn and Dune

2) What do you mean by same gateway? Is it to check all devices are on same gateway ID 255.xxx.xxx.x number. As mentioned I can see NFS shares on C200 using Network Browser so NFS folder access rights is sound.

I am suspecting it is the Asus 56 router as this is the major equipment in the network that was changed in the last 4 mths. I never tinker on the Synology except firmware upgrades.

255.255.255.0 is the sub domain. I referring to the Gateway which normally is 192.168.X.X...but that is not important now as you mentioned that your PCH is able to see the NFS shared folder.

Did you ensure the following settings has been set?

Hmm ... very strange that you are unable to see the workgroup after activating Network Browser at the A410 and likewise for the Dune in SMB - should able to see Workgroup (all the network devices).

Would presume that NFS and SMB protocol are enabled in the Synology NAS and likewise the NFS Server for the A410 as well as the SAMBA Application too. Right?

Can you check if all your devices are in the same "Workgroup"?

You can use  "MyLanViewer" which is a useful too to check ip address, mac address, etc.  ....... downloadnhere: http://www.mylanviewer.com/network-ip-scanner.html

+1. The workgroup to be the same.

Problem Solved!

The culprit is Synology under File Services whereby I need to check the box "Enable Local Master Server". I found this solution after browsing synology forum by luck.

I don't recall doing this step previously so I think must be something new introduced by Synology.

Now I can see the shared servers under Network Browser for both Workgroup and NFS for Popcornhour and Dune.

Thanks to Sunblock n Desray for helping here. ;D

Strange...there is NO NEED for me to enable the "Local Master Browser" to work, that I am quite certain...

Doing so actually allows all guest account to be able to see the network folders and shares. It seems that you did not supply the right credentials for some of your devices in this case...but hey! as long as it worked...who cares eh :P

Bro Sunblock and Desray,

Do you know if there are security risk by enabling Local Master Browser? Will my NAS be intruded by third party? I never set up any external web address for my NAS but I have enable Direct Connect.

Thanks

I didn't enable Local Master Browser as well because I don't want my or other computer resources to share with other users within the same subnet. Only the folders in the NAS are shared with their assigned rights ie read only to each device with the exception of the admin and dedicated desktop PC.

In short, all your devices are shared with other devices within the subnet and everyone will have access to it. That is the reason now why it works now for you.

However, if you allow your friends (visiting your home) to access to your home network then they are able to have access to all resources and this would be a risk if someone accidentally deleted a file or a directory. This is a factor you must consider.

As for external threats, another security prevention to have piece of mind, in your case for intruders, is that you can set-up "Auto Block" to block IP's address after 3 failed login attempts. You can enable "Auto Block" from Control Panel ---> Security ---> Auto Block. There are other options too eg managing block list (adding specifi ip address to login, with expiration time, etc)

Bro Sunblock,

I am the Chief IT Officer in my household  ;D and I have no guest that can access my network which I hope.

Interesting that you and Desray never enable Master Local Browser. Let me play around with User access level. Also in which area of Synology can I add the IP address of Dune and Popcornhour media players as been trusted sources.

Failing which I will add more security controls to keep pple from hacking into my Synology.

Thanks

I didn't enabled master local browser too. Access should be assigned specifically to each individual user. For my case, iirc, I had enabled 'read' access for my pch410.

I don't assign any IP addresses for my Dune & PCH in Synology, I did static IP addresses using MAC address found in Dune & PCH, setup them up in router level. Ditto for 2 Synology NAS & Desktop system.

Nobody can hack your NAS unless you had enabled public access. Ie: you want to access your NAS from office or mobile phone while on the go.

For guests who frequent your home, you can setup guess access function in your router, guests will not be able to access your information in your workgroup.

From this episode, it made one thing clear...there is nothing wrong with your devices. Your problem lies with either wrong credentials been supplied to the devices or you may want to change the IP Address to a static one...sometimes it does help.

You add IP address of devices directly from the "Auto Block" menu.

But personally, would suggest to use static or reserved ip address for your network devices which most of us are taking this route and thereafter assign them respectively with rights for the different folders in the NAS for each device.

Just to add, assign 'write' access if you want to use PCH to download subtitles via subtitles.com to your targeted drive, if no, 'read' access will be good enough.

My IP address for Popcornhour and Dune is already static. I can mapped the network drives in Popcorn or Dune but under Network Browser I cannot see anything per my screen shots. After enabling Master Local Brower I can see them now. I am wondering who is playing the role of Master Local Browser previously? Was it my CISCO managed switch? I recalled that my CISCO switch is not static IP. Everytime I reboot, it will have new IP address. Shall I make that static too?

Thanks

Try it as it might work for you. By setting static IP for your switch. Typically, un-managed switch will be good enough for home networking.

Real culprit found!

Its the CISCO switch that was not set to static IP. I have turn off Local Master Browser.

Happy Camper finally.

Real reason because it was managed switch, for un-managed switch, imo no need to set static IP, saves the hassle. [emoji6]

Guys

I have another issue on A410 which is not related to network ;D

I am playing a DTS HD Master encoded content but I want to output LPCM to my AVR. However I choose DTS downmix on the A410 audio setting but I still see 2.0 LPCM @ 48k.

Do you guys know which settings I need to effect LPCM output instead of bitstream?

Thanks

Posted

Why linear PCM?

I am connecting A410 to the HDMI input of the Oppo 103D to take advantage of Darbee processing. Oppo HDMI In does not support HD bitstream.

"HDMI Inputs

The inputs support stereo and 5.1 LPCM up to 192KHz, 7.1 LPCM up to 96KHz.

Lossy Dolby Digital and DTS up to 7.1.

Dolby Digital Plus up to 7.1.

They do not support input of DSD, Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA."

Posted

I have checked with PCH and A410 can;t do LPCM and can only downmix to 2 channel. So those with legacy AVR needs to take note. My other Dune can output up to 7.1 channel of LPCM.

On the positive side, I can play SACD ISO from my NAS but output at 2 channel PCM at 176 hz.

Cheers
