175 odd hours now and what looks like one dust blob (very faint circle, visible on dark background only?)

For me it's not worth sending back to Japan, given I have to REALLY look hard to spot it on a black screen, let alone normal video. However, I will send my projector back to Japan before the warranty expires to fix any issues, including dust blobs and get updated firmware.

Just curious, how many of you (HC5000 users) place your Projector in a dedicated room? This is one of the important factors that will contribute to dust blob formation. I used to own quite a number of LCD Projectors before (using D5 panel at that time) - the most notorious one I ever encounter is Sanyo PLV-Z1 - the after-sale service really make me shun away from any Sanyo Projectors in the market ever since...Other than Z1, most of my LCD Projectors have no issue with dust blob - well maybe I didn't really use 'long enough' for the dust blob to appear...hehehe...:P coz before long, I already change to another new model. :P

My 2 cents worth of tips which you can do to prevent or minimize dust blob formation...

1) Try to use a dedicated room to place this Projector - that is to enjoy your movies in the room instead of viewing it in a living room in which air flow is rather 'dynamic' - in short, as little air flow as possible. the medium that carries dust from place to place is you have guess it by now - 'air'!

2) If you're already using a dedicated room for viewing. Please remember to leave the door ajar to allow some ventilation into the room while at the same time minimize huge air flow within the room.

3) On your Air-Con and not the fan - again to minimize air flow as much as possible.

4) I discovered or rather many users of HC5000 have suggested to use some adhesive tape or equivalent to 'cover' the 'orifice' at the bottom of the Dust cover latch. It was believed that some of the dust got 'sucked' in after powering down from those 'holes'. If you looked carefully at the latch - there appears to be 2 small openings...which can be an 'open invitation' to Mister Dusty!

5) Avoid using non-porous adhesive to 'prevent' dust from entering the In-take vent - REMEMBER another worst case scenario is OVER-HEATING! This will result in pre-mature lamp failure.

6) Avoid frequent cleaning of the filter - even though the experts suggested otherwise. In this rather fragile situation whereby removing the Dust prevention cover may risk introducing dust into the projector...the whole idea of, "if it ain't broken...dun fix it" applies. Even if you need to do, please please do not on the fan and aim it directly at the Projector.

The whole idea if you realize it by now, that I'm putting across is to 'Minimize the amount of air flow around the Projector'...not to obstruct the In-take vent.

The killer-action executed in most LCD Projector which likely to contribute to dust blob formation over time is the Cooling down process of the Projector by drawing large amount of Air near the In-take vent!

Again, there's no guarantee that my a/m tips will work wonders  - its just a matter of time you can do to 'minimize' or 'deter' early formation of dust blobs in the panel. Who knows, I maybe getting one soon?!  :-X

Mine is in the living room. Door to kitchen is usually open. Windows only opened abt once a week.

So far no dust balls *fingers crossed* , at least not that I am aware of (and the PS3 is fond of grey/black screens so it shd be obvious if they were.

I have over 700 hours now I think. Maybe that's the trick to maintaining dust free projector ;) use it regularly.

Whao!!! 700 hrs already!!! Bro Doggie, when you purchase your Projector? That's an impressive hours you've managed so far! That's about the mileage that I will consider selling off my Projector for a new one...Hahaha.

I watch all my TV shows pseudo HD on it. Abt 1-2 hours every day, more on the weekends. Plus the odd new BR or HD movie, and been playing PS3 on it as well.

Bought it in December.

I believed you too agreed with me that air flow is quite important right? I

I have mine in a dedicated room. The pj is ceiling-mounted right infront of a window. I hardly open the window and aircon is used most of the time.

Close to 100hrs now since the swop in Mar'07.. no dust blob *touch wood*.

Des, what's your pj's serial number like? Mine's 25XX.

Since HT102 brought the serial number part. The earlier batch with serial no. starting 14XX are the batch that have been plagued with dust blob problems due to the poor filter used during production. Mitsubishi admitted to it and has since allowed users to send in the batch for necessary cleaning and at the same time replace it with a much better filter cover.

My serial no. (batch) is the same as HT102.

Since we touch on the serial no. Then how can we forget about the s/w version no. of the Projector. Earlier batch of firmware (version 2.0) has issues with PAL signal. The deinterlacing for PAL materials did not perform well after some testing been done by the Germany counterpart.

Subsequent batches corrected this issue with the latest version 3.0.

To check whether you have the latest version: please press <Up> button <Down> button followed by <Enter> button on t he Projector itself. Not the Remote Controller. Make sure its Version 3.0 in this case.

I have no idea what mine was... but I got it in December. Possibly the second shipment.

You can check the box. Make sure its not 14XX...chances are the firmware is not updated to the latest version 3.0 if spotted with a 14XX firmware no.

Before I place an order for HC5000, I have touch base with Aerion P/L (Master dealer for Mitsubishi dealing in both Business as well as Consumer Projector here) that they have the latest firmware version and he can teach you how to do it.

Basically the firmware update can be done via RS232 Serial Comm Port using Hyper-Terminal program. :)

Mine does have firmware v3.0

That was the first thing I verified ;)

Like that no need to worry liaoz... :)

Thks for sharing!

*Phew* my dust-blob encounter was a blessing in disguise. If not I'ld have to dismantle and bring the PJ to the service centre myself.  ;D

Care to elaborate?

It was told by a forumer in AVSForum that firmware version 4.0 will address the fan programming aspect of the Projector - in the hope to eliminate dust blob issue. Its possible via firmware update to modify the fan speed settings and its overall intensity etc...BUT is it gonna make a dramatic difference...Hmmm....I doubt so.

Will have to check with local Mitsubishi on this new version. Sound interesting though...

Wonder if the new firmware will help with the DI algorithms. To be honest, that is my biggest pet peeve today and is making me itch for the JVC! ;)

Its a plausible idea...provided Mitsubishi Engineers really put their minds together to make it work. I agreed with you that Dynamic Iris mechanism in HC5000 can be 'improved' further...

There is indeed a ver 4.0 firmware. Someone in AVSforum recently bought a Japan version unit with the new firmware.

If the new firmware is official in Sg, we'll have to bring our units down to Mediaplex or Mits service centre for the upgrade.

Yeap, you're right! There's indeed a new firmware ver 4.0. I've called up Mitsubishi (Projector Section) and managed to get hold of a guy called Andrew. He told me that he was aware of this new firmware. He will contact me once the firmware arrive at his side.

He will pass the new firmware once it become available to the dealers and the latter will aid in the updating. Not necessary to bring it down to the Service Centre at Alexandra Road though.

So I guess we'll await for the good news then. :)

Does anyone know what is actually in this firmware update apart from fan management changes?

Not too sure either...I only know about the fan part. If it also address the DI - then it will be fantastic!
