Using the Marantz 6000LE with PM 8200. I like the smooth, refined and detailed sound. How will an upgrade to CD 6000 KI or CD 17MkII improve the sound?

I listen to mostly pop and some vocal music

thanks :)

Agreed. they sound warm and slooow.

I'm using CD6000ose KI, i listen to Ministry of Sound and it still dance all the way. Not really that slow. I admit it still sounds best with rock and vocal. ;)

have been using marantz all my life, listenin to pop, punk, classical, jazz. the sound is acceptable to me cos music to me is to sooth. maybe my expectations very low da ;D

I have a CD 63SE as well.

I agree that the upper-mid is the main flaw of the CD 63SE. The CD 6000 LE does not have the same problem but it sounds clinical somewhat less involving and bubbly compared to the CD 63SE.

How does the CD 6000LE compare to the CD 17MkII?

Really? Looks like they have do away with that "Marantz" signature sound that was also found in the earlier CDP like the 52. ;)

I had a Marantz CD52 MKII SE for close to 8 years.

Although I did not have the benefit of comparison with other CDPs, I thought it was a pretty musical player. The lacking thing (retrospectively, compared to what I have now) is dynamics and details.

Of course my needs were pretty simple and I was not too critical. Sigh, life was much simpler then!

I am still holding on to my Marantz CD63KI, despite it's age, it pays my fare from pop to musicals satisfactorily. If you find the Marantz a little too boring, an op amp change, a few cap replacements or even a clock swap would do wonders to a player you thought you knew well....

It all depends on how much you want to invest. 8) *If* you are thinking to get a Mk17 at one point, you might want to check the competition to findout if you like slow sound best ;D

I am not familiar with tweaks and component changes.

Where can I but the op-amps, caps and clock?

Can i pay someone to install these components?

Which components should i buy?

Thanks :)

Hi, i used to owned CD6000OSE and like its warm meaty sound, but it won't make you dance or tap when playing some dynamic tracks. Later i replaced it with a modified CD4000 which has its op-amps and clock upgraded. Find the latter much better in PRAT but still preserves the Marantz sound. For CDP modding and repair, you can look for Adrian (pg. 9228-1304), a very friendly and helpful guy. I just had my CDP repaired and further mod by him. Hope this helps :)

dunno why so many people are crasy about the marantz cdp if you need to change the inside to have it to sound good :P . I auditioned the 17mkII and found personnaly it sucks big time. lifeless vocals and everything damn slow. not suitable for jazz or classical, imo, so forget about rock& techno punchy stuffs. I dunt say anything about other models mentioned as the ratio sound for price might be totaly different.

correction..

it sounded very good by itself for that price range. we mod it only to make it sound even better, and tweak it to our own liking.

Wat sounds good is veri personal n subjective !..Some people like durians...some just cannot stand the smell...it's tat simple

Some may say tat marantz CD player n Mission Speakers sound like crap...but I have 6 Marantz CDplayers n more than 10 pairs of Mission Speakers at home...I think they are great !(value for $$ at secondhand prices ) I did not change the inside becos they don't sound good , I made it sounds even better.

according to your logic, why drive a car if u have to pay more n pump Shell 'XO" or "V POWER " Just pump 95 Ron will do lah !. It's becos I want my car to perform better ! 8)

Hi. Thanks for ytour advice.

Just wondering which op-amp will give a faster sound while preserving the refinement and detailed sound of the CDP.

Does anyone have recommendations for op-amp compatible with the Marantz CDP?

Upgrading op-amps and clock is a common practice for CDP modders. The person who will do the mod for you should know which op-amps to use. I was recommended to do some of the mod below:

Upgrade opamps - Try OPA 2134, cheap & good. Use an 8 pin socket adapter.

Change the 100 ohm resistor near the DAC to 22 ohm. Part 3502-3504.

Change ceramic caps at opamp output to 470pf film cap. Part 2509 & 2510

Bypass psu cap with 0.1uf film cap. Part 2254 & 2258.

Well, don't ask me about the details, i am not a technical guy ;D Oh yeah, upgrading to a good clock would bring substantial improvement. If you are interested in CDP mod, here's some useful links:

Hmm... Your quote sounds like something similar, just like people enjoy buying second hand Honda cars and give it a heavy faceoff by changing its body, rims and wings. 8)
