hello everyone

Looking for suggestions to match a valve intergrated amp with krix lyric gold floorstanders.

The stereo bug has hit me hard. I'am was thinking maybe a dared or melody models. I'am also purchasing a pro-ject rpm5 turntable to run thru the system. I'am willing to spend up to 2000 dollars. I realise that the lyric gold's as 90db sensitivity. So if anyone can help me that would be great.

cheers everyone

Do you have a big room, or a small room? What type of music do you listen to? And do you normally listen loud?

look for a 2nd hand Melody or Graaf50/50 .A push/pull tube amp would suit better than SET in price range ,tube choice EL34 most have a meaty sound ,KT66 ,KT88 or 6550 .Moondog on this forum use's the 805 in a SET based amp .Or look at the newer based D class amps around .Check out Melbourne Audio Club or someone help whats that 2nd hand shop in Bayswater HiFi Exchange.

Cheers.

Keith: it's not the sensitivity that matters so much with valves as the impedance of the speaker. Many valve amps are not happy driving speakers of around 4 ohms impedance as they draw too much current. If the minimum impedance of the speakers you have in is 4 ohms or less mind, then take care with matching. If you like the 'valve sound' then an alternative could be a MOSFET or class A amp. Alan

Isn't that Graaf an OTL model? I'm not sure, i'll have to check.

I note that Krix state the impedance of the Lyrix Gold as 'nominally 4 ohms'.

When a manufacturer says that, it usually means that the speaker's impedance will be lower, as well as higher, than the quoted impedance level.

Their lowest impedance is probably about 3 ohms, which is 'no go' area for valves as far as I'm concerned.

I'm the owner of an older pair of Krix Lyrix (not the Gold version). They have roughly the same performance characteristics. Reasonably efficient at 90dB but as has already been pointed out these are nominally four ohm speakers.

And my experience suggests that they need a bit of welly to get them going and they aren't the most natural of speakers. If I were to run a valve amp here then I'd get one with considerable capacity or get another pair of speakers.

Low gain through the speakers produces a nice sound but they really don't begin to perform until they are being pushed to middish volumes.......which I suspect requires a bit of current...

I'm using an Aspen AKSA 100N+ from Melbourne to run these speakers and this is reputed to have a valve like sound (don't ask me.....I've not heard a valve amp since I was a child). Certainly sounds quite good to me!!

Hello Keith

I'm also not sure, but I thought their OTL (or atleast 1 of them) was 20W.

push/pull 50 watter wouldn't have any trouble with the Krix .

It wouldn't matter if the Graaf was an OTL an early Graaf 5050 would be a nice choice. My friend used a push/pull 5681 with the Krix Lyrix with no problems.

Im in the same boat as the OP, but after something to power a set of Neuphonix... looking at the likes of the Cayin A88T, Consonance M100+ & Prima Luna Prologue 1 - all around the 35 - 45wpc in ultralinear mode.

Im not chasing ear bleeding volumes, but i do want to have the ability to 'crank it up' occasionally but still maintain clarity and composure & without running out of steam.

Would these types of power figures be substancial with Neuphonix, or should i be looking for a bit more grunt?
