Altec and JBL horns and a woofer too

Featured Replies

I started collecting the parts last year. I just finished the woofer bins this past month. The woofer boxes are based on a vintage Jbl design using jbl 225h 15 inch woofers.

The mid horns are Altec 511b, the upper mid horns are Yamaha pro and the tweeters are Jbl.

The 511b uses a Warfedale pro driver. The rest are Jbl.

I forget the numbers.

I gave the Altec 511b to my son as a thankyou for finding my current speakers Speakerlab K horns vintage 1971. Made in Seattle Wa.

Thanks,

I'm a big fan of horns too.

In those 511 bins, the bass driver was set back to time align with the horn compression driver.

Yes it was a fault in my planning the design. I gave the horns to my son. I kept the woofers for later use.

Good to see more horn speakers ?

I now have a vintage 1971 Speakerlab K horns. Im trying different drivers and will try a pair of JBL 2225h woofers in place of the originals. Yhe originals are amazing. Deep rich and full base when the volume gets up a bit.

Ive wanted these since highschool in the 70s. I bought them at a local tgrift for 150$.

Enjoy the music.

K Horns are amazing and are bring out their best when correctly placed in solid corner walls

Yes i saw that a few days ago. What prompted me to want these speakers is a friends father had a pair that on certain rare ocasions we were able to listen to..circa 1971.

I bought a pair of Klipschorns when I was 18. I had To choose between getting a car and getting these. I opted for the speakers. They were $2000 in 1976. I did get a car as well thanks to dad, a 1964 Valiant AP-5. $600. As a 17 year old, hearing these changed my life and set me on a HiFi journey that continues to this day. Wonderful things the K Horns.

My Dad had a Valient too. Ive made a couple of changes to mine.

Im using Jbl drivers for the horns. The one on top is a Jbl 2416  in a bi radial horn. Has more range and debth of sound than the Ev tweeter.

The mid range is a  Celestion Dc 100 made by Rola Celestion in England.

Im using the stock square magnet woofer for now. Ive got some Jbl 225h to try at some point.

I just changed the fabric on the fronts to vintage Vox guitar pattern.

Yes its a great journey.

Just thought I would share something Pat Snyder (founder of SpeakerLab in Seattle) told me about the woofer in the bass horn. "In order to get the lowest frequency the horn is  capable of, (31.2 cycles) the free air resonance of the woofer must be "18 cycles or less". Not many speakers meet this requirement. The JBL's I have (D130's or 130A's) definitely do not. I used an impedence matching transformer and a HP signal generator to test my woofers (purchased from Speakerlab 1976) before installing them in my SpeakerLab Super K's and they both passed the test. I built my K's in my Dads garage from plans I bought for $10 from SpeakerLab as well as all the drivers. I still have and  enjoy them daily. I am a big fan of speakerlab and have several other models besides the corner horns. Point ones, DAS 2's, One's and Sevens. I hope the info about woofer selection for bass horns is helpful. I haven't heard many people talk about it. Horn speakers are technical. Size of the throat of the horn and expansion rate. All calculated mathematically to achieve what comes out. I wouldn't mess with it if it's not broken. Jim
