Declannz Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Just got me a pair of these! Sure, they're older than most of you guys like, but they are startlingly good. Old Audax, made here by Mr. Ball, I think. That's a very early 6.5" kevlar woofer and a 0.5" tweeter with what looks to be a paper cone. Sounds a little like a Kef T27, but without the slappyness that the T27 can sometimes have. No stickers or markings on them. They came in the original packaging, which aslo was unmarked, so I've got no idea the model or anything. The important bit is that my band is working on our magnum opus. A very NZ sounding album (think mutton birds, the beatles and the chills having a death match on old nintendo's or something while Ed Cake hums along), and now all the gear in the studio that we're masterting through, except the computer, is locally made. It sorta happened by accident, but I'm quite chuffed that amps and speakers made here by loving, obsessive genius' is still going decades later, and still contributing to local music. Yay us! Nak-Mad Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 May be AX-10's, but memory is bad . from late 80's I think. I have an NZ Audax catologue at home from that era, so will have a squizz at after work. (I have a pair of similar looking AX-15's at home, but 8" woofer and D25 silk dome.. superbly constructed by Mr Ball, gorgeous looking and gorgeous sound for the $$$)
Declannz Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Cool! thanks man! You know what type of wood that is? It looks like a rimu grain, but the colour is wrong.
Ernie1553552694 Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Nice score Dec. They look mint. Looking forward to your new music.
Hugh Sipowitz Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Wow. They look very nice. I wonder if they were modelled on Spendors? They look quite similar.
Nak-Mad Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 My AX-15's are American Walnut.... some beautiful 'figuring' on the veneer on mine , and if the attached piccy is correct, yours will be A120's, not AX-10's as I thought.. they are bookshelf jobbies, and IIRC the A120 predates both. Should sound really nice and smooth.. don't think Chris Ball ever made a bad speaker either to listen to or look at. Ah'.. maybe some 'images' one day Attached files
Citroen Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 NICE! Still regret trading in my walnut Audax A200's at The Audio House, Parnell back in the 80's.
wrecker Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I had a pair of T200's few about 15 years with about 10 years of good service. I was second owner and they wre still going fine when I sold them. Kudos to Mr Ball
