LHH Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Hi All, I've been watching a fair bit of anime lately, some of it is amazing (Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex, for instance) and a lot of it is rubbish. It's proven a good way to discover new music however. This particular fragment of cello caught my attention recently, and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of similar things (music, not anime)? Thanks in advance.
kaka Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 If you can cope with digital downloads, then these are three that I enjoyed : http://www.linnrecords.com/recording-shostakovich-cello-concerto-no-2-Britten-Cello-Suite-No-3.aspx http://www.naimlabel.com/artist-tim-hugh.aspx http://www.unipheyemusic.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=43&category=6
LHH Posted January 19, 2011 Author Posted January 19, 2011 Hi Kaka, Thanks for the recommendations. The Naim recording looks particularly interesting, I may well pick it up. Still, they're not quite what I'm looking for, so I should probably provide more details. What I like about the piece I posted the link to (the first half of the piece actually), is the repetitive, meditative, and slightly haunting quality that it has. It reminds me of Steve Reich but more visual and emotive; less intellectual. Unrelatedly, if you haven't heard Gavin Bryars' 'Farewell to Philosophy', I would highly recommend checking it out.
