-Prince- Posted February 7 Posted February 7 (edited) Hi Guys, Just wondering Is CD still popular as like Vinyl & Streaming?? Do CD playing give good sound like streamer? I know we can't compare vinyl as its better with a good set-up than streaming. If yes, do we need a very good CD transport? Can anyone please help me with some set-up of CD player? For first time, I connected my basic sony dvd player to play CD's via Coaxial in my DAC. Its not to my liking in comparison to streaming. Do I need a good CD player with good lens, reading mech and a beefier power supply and well designed player! Thank you Edited February 15 by -Prince-
aussievintage Posted February 7 Posted February 7 No, people are giving them away - the charity shops don't even want them, as they make very little money selling them at $1 each. The format of the data on CDs is not as good as can be obtained from most streaming services. I no longer have a CD player. I have a USB CD/DVD reader that I plug into my computer to copy any secondhand CDs I buy, straight to my storage to be played from there. 3
muon* Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I'm still with CDs, and found a significant audible difference between different players when used as a transport. No streaming here, and not going there. There is a good reason why some manufactures still make players and more importantly dedicated transports. 9 2

It's off Aliexpress, but they sell a few different ones and I'm not sure what other ones are like, and I am always reluctant to suggest the one I have as I still haven't checked what the mains voltage is, whether it is 220 or 230v. But there are a number of others made by known brands, Jays is well regarded as are some other ones in the main stream.. Also I'll say that in my experience the cable connecting the transport and DAC can make an audible difference too. 6

The format of the data on CDs is not as good as can be obtained from most streaming services. The biggest issue with CD is availability of titles. Shopping secondhand you're well sorted if you're looking for Guy Sebastian, Guns N Roses Use your Illusion, Clapton Unplugged, Natalie Imbruglia etc. The challenge is finding the more obscure releases. Realistically, much of the streaming is at CD level, not massively higher and frankly, every time I upgrade my system I hear "deeper" into well recorded CD's like Love Over Gold or Graceland. That being the case, something else in my system is the limiting factor, not the CD format. That's with a modest Rotel "Tribute" CD player. Nice, but nothing high end. My Nak CA5, Krell KSA80 and Martin Logan Electromotions are hardly rubbish kit, so if I've still not surpassed the resolution of the modest CD player then there's a lot more joy to be had further down the rabbit hole one would assume... That makes now (where folks are junking their CD collections) the ideal time for crate diggers. Years ago I was burgled and lost much of my collection. I've been able to double the size of the CD library over the last couple of years and cross a lot of discs off my wanted list. Take advantage of the cupboard clearers, add to your library and enjoy the music. 10

With respect, I could not agree less. Streamed music lacks ,soul, depth and emotion. Sure, it is all-you-can-eat, but with CD there are no software/app/interface issues and no dependence on internet connection. Insert disc, press play and sit back and relax for an hour, without having to stare at a tablet or phone. I have spotify free just for playing back on my laptop with headphones but it is only ever to find hear a new album from someone, to see if I like it. I also still love and use vinyl, but on my budget, new vinyl LPs are almost like unobtanium, so I buy infrequently by necessity rather than by choice. I really wish it were different, but C'est la Vie 21 1

A superb CD player in its own right, or can be used as a transport with an external dac of your choice. You can also use it with a streamer of your choice. If I were in the market for a high quality "one box solution" that covers all the bases this would most certainly be it. https://www.customht.com.au/products/rotel-diamond-series-dt-6000-cd-player-dac-transport?variant=43014891733250&country=AU¤cy=AUD&srsltid=AfmBOor1j50-cVR6bjtl0ZwGbFStCWRjIkYd-EICkRPtRXGqx_aBhqjo700 2
frankn Posted February 8 Posted February 8 As always, it depends on………. The mastering of the source you are listening to. The streaming source and CD source could be different. It could go either way. Personally I’ve found it can be either, but, there are many variables that can affect the result. A really good digital system can be amazing, streaming or playing via a server. 8

muon* Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I can't even find my Transport on Aliexpress any more, like the Jays CDT2 Mk2 it uses the Philips CDM4/19 only the Jays is better built and Jays uses new servo control board, unlike mine that makes use of a NOS Philips servo board. 1

They do make a difference as others have alluded. Good luck 2 1
frankn Posted February 8 Posted February 8 @-Prince- do you only want a CD transport or one that also reads DSD discs (either DSD only or the DSD layer on hybrid discs as well)? Recently you have been asking about SACDs and DSD format playback so I assume you have both CD’s and SACD discs.

Never got to compare mine to Matt's Jays. 3

A good question Sir , I am not in a hurry always want to buy the good one even if i have to wait longer to save or find a good one. It seems Jay's is getting many recommendations. But very expensive. This is an exercise to understand about the CD transport and will wait and save some $$ and buy the good one. May be max $1000 for pre loved. Edited February 8 by -Prince-
muon* Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Apart from a dozen or so that I bought retail or off ebay, all these were op shop buys over time. 7

Do you mind asking what is your amplifier, and the other two silver ones and small black boxes next to silvers? All in my sig. Amp is a Pass Aleph Mini Clone that I changed to caps in, little black boxes are a 12vdc 50va power supply and a FX Tube01 with mods, and the silver components are a TDA 1540D DAC and the CDM4/19 based transport on top of it. 1 1
