Hi,

Taken this from various sources including the only Britsh web site that has it.

SME M2 Series TONEARM

Following information is for the SME M2 Series M2-9, M2-10 and M2-12 tonearms

"The SME M2 is a new design and the first production batch has just been completed. The M2 series replaces the venerable 3009 series, which since December 2003 is now no longer in production. The first model in the series is the M2-9, available now. Later on this year the M2-10 and M2-12 versions will be in production.

The M2 is the first SME arm that has been designed and built using 100% metric threads, etc.

Amongst other features all models have ultra lightweight stainless steel arms with detachable magnesium headshell (with azimuth adjustment), superb ball race bearings, tungsten balance weight and offer a standard of stiffness and rigidity that will suit all types of cartridges.

We are currently fitting the first batch of the arms we have received to client decks. Initial impressions are that this arm is a fine performer, combining many of the attributes of the more expensive Series 300 and Series IV and V arms."

Anyone know how these overhang figures are measured?

Hopefully the picture will wprk this time.

Wprked that time Wiz. Looks like they are using a lot of old parts. Wonder what the function of that nipple thingy is on top of the bearing housing? Not that the look of a tone arm should influence buying decisions, but this thing to my eyes looks like a dogs breakfast of disparate bits & pieces. Still. I'd like to hear one on my VPI.

Oh puhleeezz....

This is surely an early April fools joke?

That nipple thingy - do you mean the 1960's style anti skate guide - for the wee bit o thread holding the swinging ball doodah?

And the space age materials used...

take a look (and a listen) at something like the wilson benesch arm. Gotta be worth more excitement than this is drumming up.

Dear Freakest Twink, I can't tell from that photo what the nipple thingy is for.

I listened to both The Graham & the Wilson Benesch arms on the VPI before I settled for the VPI. Although I thought the Wilson Benesch better in bottom end tunefulness than either the Graham or VPI, and the Graham better than both in ambience retrieval (God- how do I remember this stuff?) I settled for the VPI as :-

1. I got a very good price for it as part of the entire VPI.'Aries' deal.

2. I was, and still am, impressed with the fexibility of the VPI arm. Mainly the speed & ease with which I can change arm wands with pre-mounted cartridges.Being able to change VTA whilst playing LP's has something to be said for it too.

And yes I can't quite understand the hoo-har over this new SME. I'll wait till I hear it though before I dismiss it as hype.

Hi,

The March "HiFi" news apparently has a review , arm and turntable.

"Definitive Test: Musical Fidelity M1 turntable and SME M2 turntable

First turntable from the British electronics maker is paired with the very latest tonearm from the respected engineering firm SME"

For a company to release a new arm shows a lot of faith in vinyl, don't you think, especially when the one being replaced had been in manufacture since around 1976, and I can only dream of the Series 5. The SME web site doesn't list it yet.

Any ways I have a Shure V15VxMR on order expecting delvery next two weeks - FWIW.

Cheers.

Hope not, that was a dog of a thing.

To my eyes the new MF looks like it's made for them by Mitchel for sure.

Yep.

That new MF tables looks as much a parts mishmash as the SME arm.

I see elements of the Gyro/Orbe platter, with Clearaudio inspired chassis atop some giant feet a la a European table whose name I can't recall.
