If I add a poweramp for front L/R channels can I then get 7.2.4 out of this, I am thinking that the unused front channels in the Marantz could be assigned to the ceiling atmos channels.

Mmm. not so sure now. No sales assistants from HiFi stores think it can and I can't find anywhere in the manual that says you can.

Yes you can as per this on AVS

What's new in the 2016 model compared to previous model (SR6010)?

  • Can process up to 11.1 channels!biggrin.gif
For those interested in having external amps to power the main floor speakers and utilize the internal amps to power the Atmos height/ceiling speakers. In 2015 Marantz thread post number 364, jdsmoothie gave the following manual amp assign details:
Amp Assign: 11.1
Height Speakers: 4 Height Speakers
Height Layout: TF + TR (or whatever height speaker positions you are using)
Wide/HT 2: Top Rear (or whatever 2nd height speaker position you are using)
Pre-out: Front

Ok cool but the next dilemma is because their are no Marantz models around and will take up 6 weeks to get one most stores are offering the Denon 4300 for not much more, mmmm what do you think?

Just pulled the trigger on a Denon 4300 and 2 SVS PB1000 subs at $3900.

Just be aware that you can't do what you want with the 4300, I posted the question on AVS knowing I'd get a reply from JD Smoothie, who sells these and is extremely knowledgeable on what they can and can't do, this is why I hadn't posted back earlier. You could get an amp to run a pair of ceiling speakers though.

No, this is only possible on the past few "flagship" Denon AVRs (eg. X7200WA).

It's all very confusing, there is no mention on it in both the Marantz and Denon manuals but I read somewhere else on AVS that someone does do it on a Denon 4300 (I'll try and find it) doesn't really matter as the new room where it's going isn't huge so 5.2.4 will be good.

@Kazz if I am reading this right then  JD Smoothie is saying here that it can be done.

I'm setting up a 7.1.4 system with an X4300H. I saw the following statement in one of the first posts of this thread: "This model can expand from 9CH to 11CH audio in the main zone by using an external 2CH amp connected to either the FL/FR or HT2 L/R speaker pre-outs." Is there a setting somewhere where I tell the receiver which 2 channels are going to my external amp? Or does that just work automatically depending on which pre-outs get connected to the external amp.

Yup. It's call the AMP ASSIGN setting, the following example when externally amping the FL/FR speakers:

Assign Mode: 11.1
Floor
- Layout
: 5ch & SB
Height
– Height Sp
: 4ch
- Layout: Top Front + Top Rear
- Pre-out: Front

I can't be sure about the Denon but have definitely configured the Marantz 6011 to do that.

The reason the 6011 is hard to find is because it's possibly the cheapest unit to do the full 11 channel. And that the 6012 is probably on its way.

I'm pretty confident the Denon does as the Manuals are exactly the same. Qualifi are doing good deals on the Denon 4300's just because the Marantz's are hard to get. Just got to say you want a Marantz and sound disappointed when they say there is a 6 week wait.

That's a change for Qualifi  :o.  They have been responsible for the high pricing on Denon here for a long time. :angry2:

Yeah I had the feeling they just didn't want upset customers getting a Yamaha, onkyo etc.

Yes I know I was very hesitant leaving Ambertech and Integra. My last 3 machines were Integra's and not an issue.

Hi Dan,

Are you able to say what price they are doing? Or could you please PM with the price?

Regards

DK.
