Owen Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 (edited) He has blinds, they're just open. Nuckles hasn't stated that blinds would be closed for viewing, that needs clarification. It seems crazy to me that he would contemplate spending $2.5K on a Black Diamond screen if the intent was to close the blinds when viewing. That would be a total waste of time and money. The Youtube video demos of the Black Diamond usually show its performance in rooms with windows uncovered or with a lot of ambient light, its the major selling point. Its therefore not unreasonable to assume his attraction the the Black Diamond was for use in a room with uncovered windows or significant ambient light. However, as I pointed out that type of screen cant really help in his particular situation. Edited October 30, 2014 by Owen
Owen Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 (edited) Haha, Nuckles whole room is white and your questioning contrast and black levels Owen? I don't want to get off topic hear but Owen, is your room black (walls, ceiling, floor) and what is your PJ make, model and screen brand? A picture of your room or link to an old topic that you have posted pictures in would help but I doubt you ever have for fear of abuse! This topic is about helping someone choose or select products based on what he has available including his room situation. You saying BAH to picture quality doesn't help him in the slightest as it's just your biased opinion on nearly every reply you have with these topics! We all have compromises and if we didn't we wouldn't be on hear asking questions... Cheers, Brett White walls, ceiling etc are a non issue compared to ambient light in the room, which is highly destructive. Dark scenes are unaffected by room reflections and they are the ones that look washed out with no shadow detail if there is ambient light present. Not all video content is bright. A light canon projector cant do much about this situation either because in darker scenes its throws out bugger all light so the picture still looks crappy. The black level can not get better than with the projector switched off, and with any ambient light the screen is obviously grey no matter what projector or screen you use. This is a fundamental limitation of front projection. Because of my non ideal viewing environment I explored the Black Diamond and DNP Supanova screens and have posted about them hear on several occasions, but once I understood how they worked I gave up on them as they cant fix my problem. I use a JVC X3 projector in a room with white ceiling, off white walls and carpet. I lived with this situation for a while before building a black velvet lined close fitting recess (tent) extending out a metre from the screen. This "tent", plus a dark rug on the floor in front of the screen, shields the walls, ceiling and floor, from the screens light so my peripheral vision is free of distractions and is effectively dark. This made a dramatic improvement to ANSI contrast and black level in bright scenes but no visible difference to black level or contrast in dark scenes as performance in that situation is totally dominated by the projector and ambient light, not the room. Tests have show that the "tent" concept can be 80-90% as effective and painting the entire room black because near field reflections from walls, ceiling, floor dominate performance. The black level and contrast advantage of high contrast projectors is clearly, and I mean CLEARLY visible in a room with white walls, ceiling in dark scenes. Any ambient light in the room degrades the image very noticeably and always will with any screen and any projector. The importance of this is dependent on the individual and their needs-preferences. I am helping the OP by stating things as they actually are, not sugar coating the situation as some here are doing. I fail to see how suggesting "she'll be right mate" is actually helping Nuckless, much better to warn of the limitations and let him work with that IMHO. Edited October 30, 2014 by Owen
oztheatre Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 White walls, ceiling etc are a non issue compared to ambient light in the room, which is highly destructive. Yeah ambient light is awfully bad. But white walls and ceiling can have an effect too. I've done quite a bit of testing with this and placed screen right up near ceiling with white walls, thrown up a black field and you can clearly see the blacks getting effected by the light bouncing back onto the screen, it's the worst right up the top and fades back into black (as black as the PJ can produce) as you go down the screen. And some will have larger screens up quite high so a black ceiling will help there for sure.
Owen Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) I never said that room reflection control isn't of value, it definitely is especially near the screen. However, it doesn't take much ambient light to overwhelm the advantage gained which is why its so important to make the room dark. A Black Diamond or DNP Supernova screen significantly reduces the amount of light directed at the ceiling and hence back at the screen, however painting the ceiling a dark colour or covering with black velvet for a distance of about 2m out from the screen has the same effect for a fraction of the cost. A close fitting recess only needs to be 1m deep to get an even better result. Edited October 31, 2014 by Owen
nuckles Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 OK update. I am going to get the kit from cable connection. Also I am getting sent samples of screen material from dnp now I can do live comparison I will set up the 100" and video the samples taped into the projected image.

upstairs116 Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Looks great, especially for free to air and in a lounge room set up too. How's the W1070 in general? Has anybody seen rainbows? How long did it take you to set it up/align? Good work mate, here's to you having many happy viewing hours ahead
nuckles Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 Night photo hard to get a good pic. Set up was easy. Only comment on night viewing is reflected light I could just about read a book in bright movies.
