ron12 Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Is anyone else experiencing this? During quiet periods on Channel 9 and some of its other associated channels (e.g. between commercials), I can hear a low volume mains hum in the background. It sounds like the hum you would hear on a CRT TV when the picture tube would interfere with the speakers, except that I'm using a flat screen digital TV. None of the other channels have this problem. I'm getting this both via free to air (from the Mt. Dandenong transmitter) and Foxtel cable. When pausing a recording (on Foxtel iQHD) the noise goes away. None of the other channels have this hum. Is anyone else hearing this? What about other locations beyond Melbourne?
ron12 Posted June 27, 2013 Author Posted June 27, 2013 (edited) Here is an update on the problem. 1) It's not mains hum, the frequency is around 43-44 Hz not 50 Hz. 2) I'm also getting this on Nine analog. 3) I'm also getting this on another TV which is an analog TV made in the 90's. Guest Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Recently had a smart meter installed? I have noticed it is interfering with my FM reception.
ron12 Posted June 28, 2013 Author Posted June 28, 2013 While I have had a smart meter for quite some time, I doubt that the smart meter is the cause because it affects nine and its subchannels on digital and analog, FTA and Foxtel, two TVs in two parts of the home and I haven't had this on other channels.
Guest Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Powered TV antenna? Perhaps the transformer is on the way out?
ron12 Posted June 28, 2013 Author Posted June 28, 2013 Nope. Brand new unpowered outdoor antenna for digital channels for the digital TV. Replaced faulty outdoor antenna for analog channels. Also Foxtel cable STB connected to the same TV. Also back-of-the-set telescopic antenna connected to the analog TV. The same hum is on all of them, only during quiet periods and I've only noticed it between ads, as quiet bits in programs usually have background noise.
beeblebrox Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Got any easy solution for this.. don't watch channel nine... given it's happening on all their channels on both analogue and digital it's not likely to be a transmission /reception problem, maybe something in the source or encoding somewhere.. have you called them about it.
