morgus Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 The 1 year warranty offered by JVC here in Australia is pretty inadequate. My HD550 (cost over 5k new) is under 2 years old with 1250 globe hours and has developed a pink discoloration at the right hand edge of the screen extending out about 2cm, and slowly but surely getting worse. I've seen this problem happen to a person on the avsforum and it required the optical block to be replaced. I can send it in to a certified JVC repair agent and get it assessed (and pay $132 without going ahead with the repair) to be sure it is the optical block that needs replacing, but that seems like a waste as it is a good chance that the optical block will require replacing, and the cost of the part alone is more than 2/3 the price of a replacement projector. In the USA and England they get a 3 year warranty and they can get such a problem fixed under warranty. In Australia, I have a projector that is slowly but surely progressing to its future life as a doorstop. So this is just a warning to anybody thinking of purchasing a JVC projector (and I can see why, loved mine until it started to die), if you can get an extended warranty to bring it up to at least 3 years, do it! My 6 year old Panasonic AE900 is still running with 3200 hours on the globe, the picture is not a patch on the JVC, but at least it has staying power. I've started looking at replacements and thought the JVC X3 looked good (provided I could get the extended warranty). Tried to see if I could get it from my local Harvey Norman (where I got the HD550), but JVC would not sell them a single unit, only five or none, and not surprisingly Harvey Norman didn’t want to buy five. Looked into a group buy but was told that JVC had taken away the privilege due to some pressure from one of the larger home theatre retailers. So that got me wondering about alternatives, if JVC want to make it so hard to BUY a replacement to their badly warranted faulty projector, maybe I should look at another manufacturer. Anyone got any suggestions for a replacement projector in the $3k-$5k mark. The Epson TW5500 looks interesting and it has a 3 year manufacturers warranty which is music to my ears after the JVC experience. Cheers, Morg

Cheers, Morg The Epson 5500 is a great PJ and at the GB price you cannot go wrong. Agree also re warranty - At 4k - 8k there should be option for extended warranty. Just wondering -have you taken out globe and cleaned the optics with a microfiber cloth? If not it may be worth a go. Edited June 29, 2011 by bbar

Cheers, Morg A few good pjs to choose from at gb price going on this forum Re the Epson, the long lamp life 4400 hours, plus three year warranty which includes the lamp ! Was one of main reasons I went for it, first pj for me and 3 years of peace of mind definitely worth it The Epson 5500 is a great PJ and at the GB price you cannot go wrong.Agree also re warranty - At 4k - 8k there should be option for extended warranty. Just wondering -have you taken out globe and cleaned the optics with a microfiber cloth? If not it may be worth a go. With pjs at that sort of money, if can't get extended warranty, perhaps worth getting on a credit card eg gold or platinum which increase warranty 1-2 years over the manufacturer warranty
Quark Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 It's worth a look at Bitey's Guide To Your Consumer Rights here. Given the price you paid you've probably got a good claim for statutory warranty beyond one year.
Quark Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 (edited) Just wondering -have you taken out globe and cleaned the optics with a microfiber cloth? If not it may be worth a go. There's a long thread over on AVS with people reporting haze on the optics - agree this is definitely worth a try (just make sure you use a microfibre cloth). The Epson 5500 is a great PJ and at the GB price you cannot go wrong. Also good advice if there's no fix for your JVC - was mighty impressed with : )'s 5500 demoed at a recent get together. kimmik Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 There's a long thread over on AVS with people reporting haze on the optics - agree this is definitely worth a try (just make sure you use a microfibre cloth). the haze only affects brightness not colour cast.
bbar Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 the haze only affects brightness not colour cast. True; but easy to do and one can then be sure.
Quark Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 the haze only affects brightness not colour cast. On the AVS thread it looks like most haven't measured for colour, only lumens. Post #61 on page 3 measured colour differences - see www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1223098&page=3. YMMV

Post #61 on page 3 measured colour differences - see www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1223098&page=3. YMMV true. you're referring the uniform colour temperature change. i should've been clearer as i meant the type of cast the OP experienced: "My HD550 (cost over 5k new) is under 2 years old with 1250 globe hours and has developed a pink discoloration at the right hand edge of the screen extending out about 2cm, and slowly but surely getting worse"
SDL Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Have you tried talking to the store you bought it from? While warranty is one year, there is an expectation the projector will have a useful life of more than one year. There is likely a deal that can be done as if the part is faulty from manufacture and only starts to show after the warranty period is up you have a case for them coming part way towards fixing it. Car companies don't do out of warranty recalls to replace items out of the goodness of their hearts, it is because they know if there was an accident due to the issue they would face a class action. All items are the same, they should have a reasonable useful life, just a pj is not going to kill you.
Squidjammer Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 Hi Guys, My JVC 550 projector just started displaying the pink band down the side. It was purchased 18months ago and has been in use for just over a year, it has about 1200 hours on the globe. Had anyone had any luck getting JVC to come to the party and repair one of these under warranty despite being outside the warranty period? If not does anyone have any suggestions regarding how I should tackle this with the ACCC? Kind regards

Squidjammer Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Have you tried cleaning? Yeah, I gave it a clean a few months back before this issue appeared. I don't think its related? I'm going to contact JVC today to get their opinion then push back to the ACCC to see if I have a case.
SDL Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Yeah, I gave it a clean a few months back before this issue appeared. I don't think its related?I'm going to contact JVC today to get their opinion then push back to the ACCC to see if I have a case. Good luck, hope JVC are forthcoming. If it is a known issue they should at least be able to make some offer to you I would hope. I have a vested interets as my JVC, while a year and half old only has 100 hours on it - so hopefully I don't have the issue, but it will be well outside warranty as it wasn't used much initially.
Squidjammer Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Well, I've just spoken to JVC customer service and they tell me they give an extra 3months "grace period" for the warranty. I purchased the projector on 7th May 2010 which means that I fall within this period. So off to the service center it goes for a warranty repair. I'll post feedback as the repairs take place.

Highjinx Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 If JVC Australia doesn't at least offer an extended warranty of 3 years for some extra bucks, I'll buy my next JVC from the U.S.
Squidjammer Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Well I just heard back from the service center and it's definitely the optical engine that needs replacing. Apparently they have been on the phone a few times with JVC as JVC are trying to source the correct engine. It seems that they have had incidences where the replaced engine has also failed and they have since updated it to a new version. I should hopefully have an answer by tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.
kwarrior Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 And I thought the Optical Engine failure was an Epson Speciality....!! What is it with these guys....? Are they dumping rubbish here?
mr-happy-pants Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 And I thought the Optical Engine failure was an Epson Speciality....!!What is it with these guys....? Are they dumping rubbish here? G'day kwarrior It wouldn't the 1st time the land of Oz was the backwater dumping ground, where head office can hide OS. I hope SJ gets it sorted.
Squidjammer Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Quick update. Service center still waiting on JVC getting back to them regarding the replacement optical engine. If it's not available this week I'll grab my projector back and continue to use it until the part is available.
Squidjammer Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Another quick update. JVC have agreed to replace the optical engine and are now sourcing one from Japan. I have been told it could take a few weeks so tomorrow I am picking up the projector so I can continue to use it while I wait.

When they replaced my unit it took 3 weeks to get it from Japan, check and send to me.

Jibboom Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 (edited) I have the same problem and I am not impressed at all. The projector is about 21 months old now and around 2000 hours. From other posts, it seems the problem occurs down the right-hand side but I am assuming you do not have it mounted on the ceiling so the image is switched. From other posts, the problem description is consistent with the image you can see below. Here's what my 6K projector looks like right now... imageproblem I will soon be in touch with JVC to state my dissatisfaction and until I get a satisfactory response I will not recommend, nor purchase another projector from JVC again.
