Hi Guys.

Moving house shortly.

Cramped for room so might have to down size tv cabinet, is putting my centre speaker above the tv ok?

Looking to use this device here:

To mount above tv, then put centre speaker on!

Or is there a better Idea?

My M.A. centre is directly above the TV and works just fine there cannot complain so just go for it eastly.

Got my new Compact TV cabinet. Can't mount Center on wall here as it is rental place. So going with no centre at the moment.

Ideally the speaker should be mounted directly behind the screen. In most theatres they have acoustically transparent screens and have the centre speaker(s) behind the screen itself. This means that when (for example) sound travels from the left to the right it doesn't seem to dip or rise when it moves through the middle. The bigger the screen, the bigger a problem this becomes. This is expensive and also, in the case of a normal TV, technically not really possible. For the most part, with a standard size tv, it also doesn't matter that much. The "next best thing"/compromise is to have it as close to the centre of the screen as possible. Underneath is the normal position but that's usually more for aesthetics than for audio quality. Having it lower can introduce reflections off the floor, and higher brings in reflections off the ceiling. If mounting it above the screen works best for you, then (IMHO) I'd do it and not worry any more about it.

As for the shelf - should be fine. You might also find, depending on the speaker, you can directly mount it on the wall for an even neater look. Just be careful that you don't mount is so close to the top of the tv that you prevent/restrict air from flowing around the unit itself - trapping heat around a tv can shorten the life of the unit.

Cheers.

I know what it's like! Was renting for over a year until recently whilst my house was demolished and a new one rebuilt. If the center won't sit on top of the cabinet (or at a pinch, the tv) itself, depending on how heavy the center is you might consider some heavy duty 3M strips (http://www.command.com/). Easy to use and come off without damaging the wall - useful in a rental. The velcro ones are pretty neat. Just a) make sure you clean both surfaces first with rubbing alcohol *not* any other cleaner (you can get a 3M kit with a wipe included, or just get some isopropyl from a chemist) and B) let that dry and c) make dang sure that the speaker is not too heavy for the strips - I reckon that where they say the set of four large velcro jobs will hold 7 kg, halve that estimate so if the speaker is under 3kg then good oh and d) if you can, use extra strips just to make sure that speaker doesn't fall (keeping in mind that the speaker will be vibrating). Hey, at a pinch they have soap dish holders that stick onto walls that can always be repurposed as a shelf - two or three of those in a row would probably hold a centre speaker... again, your call though... ;-)

We use 2 (JBL TLX 2) ceiling mounted speakers for our centre - split at the amp. We have always had space/position limitations and find the split system perfect. Never feel that we are listening to the dialogue from the incorrect orientation.

Definitely the smaller the screen, the less an issue this becomes. Even with my new 120inch job, having the speaker below/above wouldn't really worry me that much - but I'm not a perfectionist.... not to say I wouldn't mind an acoustically transparent screen..... maybe in the future.... ;-)

We have a 104 inch screen ATM. Our room is 5.5m D and 5m W and we (IMHO), have excellent sound imaging :)
