H Guys,

With the drop in the Australian dollar last year, there was a jump in the price of imported eletronic goods in this country.

What I want to know is with the recovery of our currency, will there be a return to last year prices (or close to) of these goods here?

This may have already occurred with some items, but many of the products I have considered purchasing latley seemed to have remained at the higher prices.

Unfortunately, somehow, I don't think that RRP's will decrease, if/when the Australian Dollar steadily climbs.

Prices are very quick to increase but very slow to decrease (if they ever do).

However, some stores are keen to move (sell) their units, so good bargains can be had. Just bear in mind that specialty stores that have had units sitting on shelves for a long time don't necessarily want to sell them for next-to-nothing; after all, they have been waiting for so long to sell them and to finally sell them, they will need to make a reasonable amount of margin.

Absolutely correct. Retailers who purchased their stock when the Economic Crisis hit don't want to sell their gear less than what they purchased it for or make 5% - 10% on it. I don't think we'll see prices come down very much this year until there is a clearer picture for the econimic outlook. I've already heard rumblings that interest rates are going to go back up before the year is out. They now want to slow people's spending after the stimulas package and also keep people's hands in their pockets.

I think next year you might start seeing some price relief but if you want to save money there is only one thing you can really do right now - import. Either that or negotiate with a retailer on stock they are finding difficult to move. Regardless of the economy I'm already disillusioned with what we have to pay for Stereo gear. I simply cannot understand why we must pay a ridiculous premium over what our U.S/Singapore counterparts pay. But that's another story and I've heard all the excuses form retailers.

Being in Sales myself (automotive), I do feel for our specialist stores. They may not want to/be able to sell mainstream brands (Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, and the like) as cheaply as our bulk box-movers such as Harvey Norman and JB Hi Fi, but I am still happy to pay the little bit extra for the good knowledgable service that I get from a specialist store. Wouldn't it be a shame if our specialist stores cease to exist because everyone auditions gear with them but purchase them for $50.00 or so less from Harvey Norman?

I just get frustrated at the idea of having to pay up to 30% more for exactly the same product.

One example is the klispch Rf83 speaker. I fould a link to an old encel stereo webpage which advertised it for 5K (I assume this was about 2007/2008 prices). Currently, they are retailing for about 6.5K!

With receivers and tv's, I know the actual products will change from year to year with advancement in technology, so would be willing to pay an additional cost. But speakers are another story.

Its interesting to see that not all products have gone up in price - not sure how that works

If you are not fussed about shipping, Singapore is the way to go.

Cheers

Why import from Signapore as oppose to any other country? Is it a volatge thing? Is shipping cheaper? I think I've seen a few posts about this, so may do some investigation.
