Hi all,

Enjoying a few tunes while working, and as a Aussie of a certain age, it pleased me no end to hear a couple of slang terms I rarely, if ever hear in normal speech anymore (unless it's me telling my kids "Didn't they teach you anything in school" when they give me that look after dropping some old phrase).

Add ones you hear in songs for fun.  I'll kick it off with the one that gave me a smile today:

Men at Work - Down by the Sea:  "Yonnies in the wind".  As a footnote, I remember "pegging yonnies" when pegging meant throwing.

The kids are fighting and the mossies are biting, who forgot the aeroguard?
There's bull ants in the Esky, and the beer is running out...

And when the barbie's over and your homeward way you wend
With a queasy tummy on the family dunny many lonely hours you spend...

Two snippets from Aussie BBQ - Eric Bogle

I think you wouldn't have trouble finding it in Chad Morgan's songs.

Take the title track of this compilation for an example...

I'm sure some of Barry Humphries songs (sung by his characters, like Sir Les) wouldn't disappoint either.

Good to hear from another who likes Chad Morgan.  I even have some of his original 78s.  I love the mentions of local places in those old Aussie country songs.  Case in point, Chad's "tough cane cutter from the Isis"

I have some of his 78's as well.  The 3CD Regal Zonophone set is worth getting (all in that series are, except for the Rick and Thel IMHO).  In with all his humourous songs is one very harrowing serious song about his alcoholism, very powerful.  The DVD "I'm not dead yet" is a great overview and tribute to him.
