Guest tesna Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Just got the LG MS409 few days ago, so far I'm very satisfied with it! But I have a few questions: 1. Has anyone tried to play ifo/vob files? my 409 does not recognize it. Later I'll try to play ripped DVDs in ISO format. 2. does this unit able to play movie dvds from usb DVD-ROM drive? If yes, I'm going ditch my dvd player. 3. What do you guys use to convert recorded TV program ( .TS) to MKV or divx?

Guest tesna Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 (edited) I have strange problem here, the internal HDD is not detected after I performed network update! I tried to reset factory defaults but its still not detected Using USB to play media files works fine though, and DTV still functions properly (but can't record to internal HDD). Has anyone perform network update on MS409? Currently I'm trying to redownloading and installing the firmware. EDIT: redownloading and reinstalling the firmware still does not work. However, I tried to put an HDD drive (Western Digital 1TB) into the empty slot and the media browser recognizes it. I guess something wrong with the internal 500 GB HDD. EDIT2: Those of you who has MS408D/MS409D, can you post your firmware version? can have you update your firmware? After updating currently I'm on 20090923B.. previously I can't precisely remember it, but I think 200907**A. I just emailed LG regarding this problem. Edited October 14, 2009 by tesna
lancer1993 Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 (edited) Just saw this in Good Guys and I want to buy it, if I had the money but that's another story. Currently I have an LG DVD/HDD with single SD DTV tuner. I record a number of shows on FTA and via my Austar digital box (not MyStar). Normally I record to the HDD, edit them then copy to DVD, later to be turned into avi files for archiving on the LAN. Anyway I was wondering is there any way to put the recordings via USB drive or over the LAN to a PC for converting to AVI? I've been looking at getting a twin HD unit for a while but this is the first one I've seen that I like. I know you can archive the, to the removable HDD can this be dropped in to a case and hooked up to a PC? Basically I need to know can you edit out the ads like I can with my current LG and can they then be used to make AVI files or burned to DVD to keep and play back in a normal DVD player? Sorry if this have been covered. ETA - I just noticed this unit has no AV input, so no way to hook up my Austar box! A big mark against it IMO. So are we left with needing this and MyStar, so 2 PVRs when I only need one? Edited October 15, 2009 by lancer1993
Paul55 Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 ETA - I just noticed this unit has no AV input, so no way to hook up my Austar box! A big mark against it IMO. So are we left with needing this and MyStar, so 2 PVRs when I only need one? The Beyonwiz DP-P2 and the Topfield TRF-2400, both have A/V inputs, twin HD tuners and 500GB HDD. From my experience, both companies make excellent PVRs (although there were some 'issues' with the Toppy 7000 series). The user community for both brands is very active and extremely critical - hence lots of 'this should be better' comments - probably moreso than 'mainstream' brands such as LG/Panasonic/Tivo/Sony etc.

If just wanted a PVR from Austar I'd probably go with MyStar but I want the ability to record to the HDD then edit out ads and copy to DVD (or other media if it's an option) then turn those files into divx/avi. Looks like for now I'll be sticking with my SD LG unit. Maybe I'd be better off building a PC with tuner card and large HDDs or just getting a USB DTV tuner for my current PC? Guest tesna Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 ....- Firmware update by networ worked perfectly. No fix yet for 1080p being reset on restart. .... EzDingo, can you tell me what's your current firmware version? I have upgraded my MS 409D firmware version 20090923B using network update function but my internal 500GB hdd gone from media browser. I can't record to it either. I just want to know whether is my unit faulty or this mess caused by the new firmware.
workman Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 thats funny i never experienced any of those problems. i haven't networked my unit yet, but as for playing a wide variety of files it's done better then my windows pc :/. it's picture quality is brillant (using component still) on my JVC 70" lcos system. easily as good as my previous set top. sound has no issues either, DTS and dolby is flawless. I have encountered only one annoyance worth mentioning, an issue that i hope they fix with an update - when a show is set to record, it interupts the currently playing video or dtv channel and switchs you to the channel being recorded. this seems like a pointless annoying "feature" as it's a dual tuner capable of recording on one tuner and playing off the other, and you can skip back to the channel you were on after it's interupted you. this also results in the unit waking up in the middle of the night and playing that late night show (THE most annoying part). i've never owned a pvr before but i love this one and my g/f loves it as well, she hasn't had a single problem using it so i think that's testimony enough that it's user friendly. i'd say in a nut shell: pros: easy to nagivate menu's responsive channel changing and recording chase play wireless N usb hdd access and network play plays virtually any media file up to 1tb additional harddrive via caddy free 8 day epg 30sec skip forward and 10 sec skip back asks if you want to resume playing last point on all media. cons: won't silently record!!! usb port is on the front, but covered with front cover flap - this might just be me as i use a removable usb hdd until i put in a network point. can't make playlist if files aren't stored on local hd. there's a few other very minor niggles, such as the channels could be organised in favourites in a better way etc. that might be down to personal perference though.
workman Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Was watching a mkv movie last night and had timer recordings setup... what happens is it paused the movie to show a dialog box stating recording about to start (continue or cancel). continue stopped the movie and displayed the station. I presume cancel stops or not the recording and 'perhaps' leaves me in the movie i was watching. Either way its a very annoying interruption to the viewing experience... i mean, i already set up the timer record so 'of course' i wanted to record it - just do it without interrupting my movie and worse still taking me out of the movie. Lucky the resume from last point works very well. agreed, this is the only real blemish i've found on it. it's stupidly annoying. does anyone know of someone knowledgable from LG that could shed light on wether this is going to be fixed? if enough people make a noise and harrass the right person you canusually get things done i've found.
tjb Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 this also results in the unit waking up in the middle of the night and playing that late night show (THE most annoying part). Can you provide more info on this? Does the unit wake up to play or record? Does it wakeup at times that it's not scheduled to record? Thanks.
workman Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) Can you provide more info on this? Does the unit wake up to play or record? Does it wakeup at times that it's not scheduled to record? Thanks. The unit wakes up when a program is scheduled to record. typically i leave my reciever on and turn off the TV at night, so when the unit wakes up and plays the scheduled program it' recording, the sound starts playing. My fix for it is obviously to just turn off the reciever, but this is a bit annoying as it means a 2nd remote (the lg's remote does my jvc tv perfectly), or getting up and pressing the button. on futher investigation of this "feature" i've come up with a theory - i think the software was developed on a system with a single tuner, making the changing of channels a requirement. they probably ported this over to the dual tuner system without thinking to change this. lancer1993 Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I'm looking at getting one (to replace an earlier LG DVD/HDD) but I need to know, it says you can transfer files to and from PCs/Macs what format does it use for recording? can these files be edited or re-encoded to other formats like AVI or MP4? Also is there any way to hook up a VCR or other device (video or still camera) to record from to transfer old videos or home made DVDs to the unit for archiving or editing?

Guest tesna Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I ended up switching the unit to new one, with old firmware. I won't update the firmware ever again for sure, as currently I don't have any major problem with the firmware. Last time I only saw the ability to set IP address manually on the wired/wireless interface after installing new firmware. With old firmware I can't do that. Btw, currently I transfer the recorded tv shows to external drive using copy function, then transfer to my PC. I'm unable to directly access the LG via the network. Is anyone able to connect to the LG via network? I thought it can be accesses like a network shares/NAS, but apparently not. I wish somebody will be able to add this function, since the LG is based on linux, just like other media player.

So once on the PC can you edit them to AVI/MP4 or burn to DVD as a VOB to rip using GordianKnot or other somftware? I'm 99% convinced that I will get one of these in the next few months but I just don't want to loose the abilities I have now. BTW I'd also be interested in the networking issues from a Mac POV.

It's a .TS file, maybe if I have time I'll look on how to convert them to mp4/divx and try it.
workman Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I've got a reply back from LG reguarding the interruption of play back when a recording starts - they gave me the usual line about "it's not considered a fault" and gave no mention of a fix timeline. how does a wiz P2 compare? i'm considering taking it back, if a P2 can do everything the lg can without the annoying interruptions.
Guest Mackerel59 Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) LG MS408D. Can anyone tell me why a Timer Recorded program setting would show a status of "Paused" rather than the usual status of "Ok"? How can the status of "Paused" be changed to "Ok"? Appears to be a 'bug'. I'll have to wait until I can afford one to try it out and keep the current set up as a back up.
