sherman1 Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Having got the Samsung bdp1500 free via redemption when I purchased my Series 6 40" LCD, I thought this would be a nice added extra to my Home theatre system. My idea is to have the Samy as a alternative blu ray player to use, so that I dont have to always use the PS3 all the time and to cut back on wear and tear to the PS3 system. After connecting the samy to my lcd via HDMI and to my receiver, I was astounded by the actual difference in sound it has compared to my PS3. Overall the PS3 sounds like its going to knock your socks off when example an explosion is heard. As an example with the PS3 on and the sound on the receiver set to 38, low level effects are brilliant. On the Samy with the receiver set the same volume level, their is no comparison. The sound seeming a little tamed down. Now I mucked around with the settings in the Samy, and found no matter what I chose, the sound seems a bit echoey if you no what I mean. All my cables are excellent quality Monster branded ones (please dont start the monster debate) so that actually rules them out if they are at fault. Picture quality I would say is a bit on the fence too. Having gone back and forwards looking at the PS3 and the Samy, I am left feeling that the Samy does not give the same quality and feel of the built in blu ray player of the PS3. Thus robbing me of a real cinamatic experience of what blu ray is suppose to look and feel like (In my case!). For an individual who does not have a PS3 to compare, I guess wouldn't really know what I mean and wouldnt know any better. I am left feeling that, the Samy is a inferior player to the PS3s blu ray player, unless someone can prove to me otherwises. I am not trying to condem the Samy, but I am left wondering why its a big difference? Anyone else have a PS3 to compare??? I would like to here what you think. My opinion is unless I have not configured something right in the Samy, then the PS3 still remains the best Blu ray player to get. I just wished that the Samy was at least on par with it, so that I can alternate to and from the PS3.

Ok the Picture quality was compareble to the PS3, but the sound was abysmal compared to the PS3. I had connected it via optical and tried to watch Mission Impossible 2 bluray. For the life of me I couldnt sit thier listening to the washed out sound that this blu ray player was producing. The speech dialog comes out of the centre speaker but it is very echoey, so much so that I am struggling to hear what they are actually saying. The surround effects and low levels are not bad. Its when dialog is spoken that I have the issue. So how did I fix it. I didn't- I just got rid of it and bought a the Panasonic DVD Recorder with twin HD Tuners. Oh well didnt have a PVR anyway. Looks like the PS3 will have t be used for blu ray.
mrdenn1s Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Why would you connect via optical and not use the audiophile setting via HDMI on the Sammy?
sherman1 Posted November 22, 2008 Author Posted November 22, 2008 Why would you connect via optical and not use the audiophile setting via HDMI on the Sammy? Because my receiver only has HDMI pass through for video only and not audio. Audio needs to be connected via optical only.
mfedley Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 If you are connecting your BD1500 via Optical Out, then of course it will sound inferior. You are comparing apples with oranges. It only accepts DD 5.1 and DTS (may be able to accept up to 1.5 MBPS - correct me fellow forum members if I am wrong) Because my receiver only has HDMI pass through for video only and not audio. Audio needs to be connected via optical only.
mazman1503559902 Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Wouldnt that mean it would be the same for his ps3, where he would run optical from ps3 to his amp, therefor only having dd and dts
sherman1 Posted November 22, 2008 Author Posted November 22, 2008 Wouldnt that mean it would be the same for his ps3, where he would run optical from ps3 to his amp, therefor only having dd and dts Thats my point, The PS3 is connected via optical and sounds so much better. So why the major difference???
h45e Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Use the ps3. i, pissed of with my sammy because ive got tonnes of region 1 dvd's and cant set the sammy to region free dvd.
hazzad Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 And the PS3 is DVD region free when? UNless of course you have a Region A PS3?
sherman1 Posted November 22, 2008 Author Posted November 22, 2008 Upgrade your amp! Bugger that. The PS3 I will use as the primary blu ray player and my Panasonic DMR X-W300 is region free for DVDs etc. Plus I cant afford to fork out for a new receiver with lossless audio built in just to make the Samy happy, and what if it still wont fix the issue?.
