Selling my Marantz SR-8001 - the "True Audophile AV Receiver" as it's often referred to in countless online reviews.

In fact, due to its massive toroidal transformer and high current, many people prefer it to the likes of Arcam 350.

The lowest price I found online for SR-8001 is $2,799

http://www.ultimohometheatre.com.au/sd2-1/...1-awesome-value

Selling for $1600 - that's $1200 below cost and less than 1/2 RRP!

The difference between Marantz SR8001 and the newer 8002 is that 8002 can decode bitstream output from Blu-Ray players in HD audio codecs (DTS MA and Dolby True HD)

The fact is - because of DRM, very few players send HD audio across HDMI in bitstream format (my PS3 doesn't)

Instead, the players decode HD audio internally and send audio signal to the AV receiver in lossless PCM (LPCM) format.

This makes a lot of sense, as it's easier to upgrade to next generation BD player (which get cheaper every month), than your beloved 25kg amplifier (they don't get any cheaper).

The unit can be inspected and tested (only if you bring the cash rolleyes.gif ) at St Leonards (Sydney lower North Shore)

If someone wants to buy it together with my MA GS20 speakers, I will throw in a set of QED Silver Anniversary bi-wire cables (L/R/C)

I will let this add stay here until the end of this week, then will put everything up on Ebay this weekend.

The fact is , very few players don't send HD audio across HDMI in bitstream format ( although my PS3 doesn't)

However, most players can also decode HD audio internally and send audio signal to the AV receiver in lossless PCM (LPCM) format.

So what you are trying to say is "if you have a PS3 as your BD player and are happy with it, this is the perfect AVR for You!"?

hey DJ, that's a very good question!

The answer is YES, because:

125 W of continuous THX-certified power in each of its seven Current Feedback amplifiers is generated by a huge Toroidal Power Supply, known for its stability even when reproducing the most demanding dynamics. To preserve the purity of the signal, an anti-interference copper-plated chassis is incorporated, resulting in greatly improved aural characteristics.

In its capacity as the heart of a surround sound system, the THX Select2 SR8001 delights with an array of the latest generation of digital surround decoding technology.

Sound is optimised for the room with built-in Room Calibration, by Audyssey. Finally, HDMI digital video switching capability with I/P conversion ensures that the highest video quality is activated when required

• THX Select2 certified Current Feedback AV-Receiver delivering 7 x 125 Watts

• Decoding for High Definition (HD) Audio from Blu-ray Disc™ or HD DVD (via HDMI with 7.1 Multi-channel PCM)

• Toroidal transformer, copper-plated chassis and customised components

• Room Acoustic Calibration with EQ by Audyssey for one touch speaker setup

• 32-bit DSP with THX Surround EX, DD-EX, DTS-ES, DTS96/24, CSII and DPL IIx

• Dolby Headphone and Dolby Virtual Speaker II

• 4 in / 2 out HDMI switching / repeating for digital audio and video

• High grade video conversion with line memory up to HDMI

• Interlace-Progressive conversion for analogue to HDMI converted video signals

•Dual Multi-Room / Multi-Source for audio and video (up to component level) with OSD

• Surround Back for Multi-Room assignable

• Speaker C function for real bi-amping of front channel in 5.1 setup

• 192 kHz / 24-bit D/A converters on all channels

• Pure direct mode and Video off mode for best analogue sound

• Sound delay function to sync audio and video

• RS-232C port, Flasher in IR Flasher out, IR receiver in and DC triggers for system integration

• Function rename for customisation

I think you are right. I was selfishly rewriting part of the OPs sales pitch to something, I believe, more accurately reflects the current situation.

In the meantime, great AVR if you don't want HD audio decoding.

Good Luck with the sale...

Couldn't agree more with you, Norseman - it's all hype and "value-adding" marketing tricks to make us audioholics drool over the next "must have" gizmo

Come on, can you name one BD player that you would WANT to buy, that doesn't already have top-notch on-board HD audio processing, to pair it up with an amp of this class?

Or, alternatively, - a BD player that can output HD audio in bitstream, but cannot send the same thing in LPCM?

A Sony BDP-S550 or ES5000 would also go very nicely with this AVR as the both have onboard decoders for all BD codecs, the latter will even output DSD from SACD's over HDMI which the sr8001 can internally decode.

no DSD on the BPD-S5000ES im afraid.

the new SCD-XA5400ES does though (but no word on that being available locally)

Great receiver. [Edit: And great price, considering the current exchange rate.]

Many people don't realise that receivers need burn-in as well. I found this out accidentally when I tried to burn-in a pair of high impedance headphones by leaving them on a rock-music radio station at a little higher than normal volume for a couple of nights. It turned out that it was not enough time to burn-in the headphones, but my speakers now sound better. :-)

Jie, were you running in a pair of high-ohm Beyerdynamics?

I've got a pair of 32Ohm DT770's and these ugly monsters simply wipe the floor with the Senns

Interestingly enough, after the overseas trip I switched to a pair of supra-aural Bose cans - you know, the kind they sell in Apple stores ..

Almost as good as BD, but much lighter on the head .. just love listening to jazz tracks with lots of drums in them.
