bellotv Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Just to confirm a few details....I have a 4:3 Sharp TV and I guess if am receiving a HD 16:9 broadcast through the Healing HD box, I'll get a letterbox format picture (black borders on the top and bottom), right? I am also assuming that the Healing has the option to fill the entire screen with the image, cutting off the left and right sides of the picture and maintaining correct proportions? Similarly, Ive noticed with some cheap set top boxes, when you receive a 4:3 broadcast on a 4:3 TV, you get a black border surrounding the whole image, resulting in an overall smaller picture. With this Healing box, would a 4:3 broadcast fill the screen of a 4:3 TV with no borders in sight? The Healing HHT890 will do the usual three options.16:9 , 4:3 letterbox and 4:3 center cut (or pan and scan as some call it) Its the 4:3 letterbox that gives you thye black boarders all around when a 4:3 pic is sent and you have a 4:3 TV. I always set 4:3 centercut when using a 4:3 TV to avoid this .Sure you loss a bit of the sides on a 16:9 show but its never really noticable. Some times you even loose the shite mark

There's a third aspect ratio for 4:3 screens that some STBs offer, namely 14:9, which is a compromise between the letterbox and centercut options that are usually available. I think 14:9 is what most of the networks are broadcasting in analogue these days: it gives thin black bars at the top and bottom, which are not really annoying, but you lose less at the edges than you do with centrecut. I agree with bellotv that it can be nice to lose the station logo with centrecut, but I sometimes found it annoying to also lose written info (like the name of the person they are interviewing on the news). The Humax 1010T box I use with the 4:3 TV in the bedroom has this option (though it has other limitations, such as no video output options other than composite). Havind said all of that, I'm not quite sure how 14:9 would look if the broadcast itself is in 4:3 - I guess you will still see black lines all around. Cheers, geetwo
tribal-warrior Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 I'm not familiar with some of the technical audio terms and concepts but can this Healing unit decode / 'downmix' Dolby Digital 5.1 to stereo?
cattyindigo Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Does anyone know where one of these can be purchased in Sydney, Inner West area? None of my local stores seems to have one....
KOAZ Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 (edited) Can anyone please confirm something for me with the Healing HHT890: If you have it connected via HDMI to your TV(Plasma or LCD)? Can you then connect it via S-Video & audio to Pana DVD Recorder to record pgms. As i want to do this as i own a Pana EX-75 and am thinking of buying the Healing. Ok my other questions are: What output resolution have you set the STB to via HDMI? Can you record channel on the DVD Recorder and watch a differant channel via the STB? koaz Edited March 30, 2008 by KOAZ
skywatch Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Some new information from my supplier. He is out of stock and when ordering from his wholesaler was told there would be a 6 week delay as there are update(s) to be installed. Presumably one will be the problem with the remote external sensor. Another problem I have observed with my unit is some pixalation and sound breakup on all channels when the unit is powered on after being switched off at the power switch on the front panel overnight rather than from the standby condition via the remote. A couple of power off - on cycles from the remote seems to clear the problem. I have not noticed this if the unit has been in standby overnight and powered on via the remote. Anyone else noticed this?

Anyone else noticed this? I called Laceys TV today at head office, to ask if they have any in stock (since I am local, and it's easy for me to get to Laceys). I spoke to a woman in sales, who told me they've sold out of the HHT890 (due to unexpected demand) and they aren't getting any more, because they have two new high-def STBs coming in the next month or two. She was vague on the details (and the technical guy who does their R&D is away on leave) but said there is a high-end box, with new features, coming in about two months, and a cheaper box coming in about four weeks. She didn't admit to any problems with the HHT890, but stated that these are new boxes (with a more powerful chip, apparently). Now I am curious to know what the new features in the fancy box are! Shame the R&D guy wasn't in, because I've spoken to him once before, and he was happy to talk. geetwo

I'm not in a hurry to get one, so I might wait for the replacement model in a few weeks. Cheers, geetwo
GEoMaNTiK Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 This Healing model is looking the goods once the small bugs are fixed. I've been looking at the Olin player which is listed at $125, can anyone recommend the Healing over the Olin, or at this price range, are they all the same? The HD processor appears to be the same for both models (RTD2881)
dig2all Posted April 7, 2008 Author Posted April 7, 2008 same chip does not mean the same receiver. there are plenty of examples of different receivers with the same chip - some are delights, others .....
