IMO, I don't think creating a lot of mods to go hunting spam is the answer.

Maybe optical recognition test during registration and limit the number of posts/threads of new members. Don't be too hard on new members or you will not get any signing up. Can you ban certain IP addresses from certain countries from signing up?

The whole sign up and spam process is a scripted automated process and seems to be getting more sophisticated in what it can do all the time, I'm sure the spammers that write this crap have their own forum setup for testing, apparently they are even recognising the picture database for the jpegs that are used by some forums for the sign up procedure.

I admin on two other IPB forums and they are currently set to manual validation at the moment because the automated spam was getting frustrating, it means real users have to wait a bit longer for their validation to be approved but so far it has been the only way to slow the spam down until IPB tighten up some of the holes in their forum software, those two forums get at the very minimum of 10 scripted sign up attempts per day, this forum would get at least the same quantity of fake sign ups each day also.

Anyone that wants a clean forum needs sufficient moderation, no matter how many patches are released they will always be looking for ways to get around it and get their spam out.

Ironically, the new version of IPB (v2.2) is slated to have very anti-spam measures. They haven't hit beta yet

Lets hope they get it locked down and more secure than the current version :D

The spam problem isn't a security issue.

Put simply, the spam bot is able to read the security graphic and register an account. At that point, its able to - legitimately - make new posts.

lol just saw that.

Yah I saw the placeholder for what 2.2 contains, but not the beta. Sadly tho, its prolly not a good version to throw into production.

I would be hesitant to run a beta on a forum that sees as much activity is this one does, its at least a good indicator that we are not too far off from a release though which is good news

some trusted soles on board, I'm not sure what power you think anyone is going to abuse

Ohhhh baby!

Sorry for the red text up top, will have to remain for a few days so we don't get inundated with "I can't make new post" moderator requests.

, but I wouldn't see the "New Mods" as "Troll-Hunters"

Ahh g'dam Austen!

Thats me off the list (well off THAT list anyway LOL)

Bitey!!

I agree. :D

Check 1,2.

I think the microphone is broken

I agree with the rest of you something has to be done to stop the spam & crap posts, but seriously this is getting as bad as terorisim. We have to change our lives & restict ourselves in what we do & post, just because some f#*kwits can't follow the rules.

I think it's time for a revolution lets all stand up & fight back.

Volunteers to fight...i have just one pitch fork though
