bigcitytown Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Hey guys New to the forum, just bought a Samsung DVD-HR720 that is a good machine for what I want to use it for. As I am yet to buy the big screen tv to complete my setup, I am currently running it on a 34cm sony tv. It is an older model with only one av channel. Therefore, I am running the DVD recorder into the tv, and running my new pioneer dvd player through the av in ports on the dvd recorder. All was fine until I put the second disc of REM: Reveal the limited edition (which is a dvd with the whole album in dvd-audio, and other dvd-video goodies) into the pioneer player and discovered the screen is way off centre and flickers. Take the disc out, and low and behold the screen remains like that, with a flickering off-centre 'pioneer' sign and all weird stuff happening at the bottom of the screen. Load another dvd, and the screen returns to normal. I have two tvs and three dvd players in my house. I hooked up every dvd player through the dvd recorder, and the same thing happens everytime with the same disc. then i took the dvd recorder out of the equation and hooked up the dvd players individually and in turn to each tv and played the disc: Not a problem. Perfect picture. I even played the disc in the samsung player itself, and no problems. I also hooked it up with s-video cable, and the identical results occur, so it isnt the video input on the dvd recorder. Hook all of them back up through the av inputs on the dvd recorder, and the same problem happens again. Same disc, everytime. Catch 22 is, twice, I have put a new dvd in and the screen returns to normal, then put a completely different dvd in that I have never put in before and it does the whole flickering thing again. This has only happened twice and both times it has been the second disc put in after the initial problem disc. I went back to the store that i bought the dvd recorder, and they gave me another model to take home. Did all of the tests again, same result. It appears to be a samsung thing. The samsung rep is at a loss as to why it is happening and is speaking to his 'superiors'. it seems to me like I need to get my money back and go another brand. Can any of you lovely people shed light on my issue? Many thanks Confused
dezzy Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Why do you need the separate DVD player at all? Presumably the DVD recorder will also play DVDs.
bigcitytown Posted July 11, 2006 Author Posted July 11, 2006 Hey Dezzy I got a good deal on a pioneer player with hdmi. The video and audio dacs were better spec'd than the samsung's capabilities so i bought it. I have hdmi equipped amp and hd-stb and in the soon future hdmi tv. All that is required now is to wait for hdmi cables to drop in price! Bigcity
dezzy Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Fair enough Bigcity. Keep in mind that the best possible output of any DVD player is equivalent to standard definition TV. There is some debate if hdmi is of any real benefit for DVDs. Of course, a different game altogether with the forthcoming HD DVD formats.
dezzy Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 It seems that you have two threads about the same topic. The post on the other thread put his finger on your problem. Even if you are intending to pass-through the signal from the Pioneer, the Samsung recorder would think that you are trying to record that signal and would activate the Macrovision copy protection. Just use your Samsung alone until you have your more elaborate intended equipment. Check the Doom9 forum for more information about Macrovision.
bigcitytown Posted July 15, 2006 Author Posted July 15, 2006 Dezzy Yes i accidentally posted the same thing twice. Sorry. Is there really much difference between a top quality component input picture compared to a hdmi picture? Also, apart from the ease of having only one cable, what advantages are there in carrying a digital sound signal through hdmi instead of a good quality coax cable? Thanks bigcity
