Benq pe 8720 Price Drop!

Featured Replies

Hi there, could someone help a prospective BenQ buyer? ;-)

I have had a look at the user manual for the W10000/9000, but can't be sure it has vertical stretch (as required for CIH).

I see a few here use the 8720, which looks to be the same basic machine, and some also have an 'aussimorph', so I figure it must be able to do so.

The manual talks about letterbox and cropping, and the associated illustration does'nt inspire confidence.

What say?

Philippe

It can take 16:9 to 4:3 but no haven't seen a vertical stretch function

I'd use my VP30 for that

\sorry not much help

I have had a bit of bad luck.

Had to drop projector at service agent yesterday, hope my experience is better than Mark H.

Been busy lately so the first time I fired up projector was on saturday.

It had been going for a total of 15 minutes then a big bang and no picture, took lamp out it had exploded, glass everywhere

Lets hope this is not a sign of things to come.

That is not good hoorootou. You are the first person I've heard of that has had a lamp go on their 8720. I'ts a little unclear from your post, but was this the first time you had actually used the projector? or just the first time in a while.

Please let us know how you go with BenQ service, and I too hope that it's nothing like MarkH's experience.

Finally got projector back, (Last Friday) service could have been quicker, but lost at least a week due to holidays.

Overall happy with service, the service centre here in Adelaide is flat out they are the service agent for many popular brands.

So all in all not to bad, at least there was no third degree just took it, fixed it and gave it back.

All seems well had it on for a few hours on weekend and all being well will mount it on ceiling this weekend.

Still Happy :D

It's good to hear a positive experience regarding customer service hoorootou, especially after the countless issues with the likes of Panasonic, Sony etc., it does seem to be service agent dependent though.

Thats seems to be the only problem Foggy, your Benq service is as only as good as your local service agent.

Purchased for $3.675 today from a Hi Fi Outlet and would like a little information as far as cables go plz.

My Reciever is a Pana sa xr55 ,so no Hdmi

Pana s97 dvd hdmi

8720 hdmi

lg hd stb hdmi

So my question is ,will component still give me a decent pq feed with these,or is there an alternate way

of setting up that might be better for 720p viewing?

Cheers

Munners

munners, the quality of the component connection really depends on it's implementation in your source device. Some DVD players and STBs have a good quality component out, while others are way below the HDMI out in the same box. I can't comment on your S97 or LG as I don't know a great deal about these devices.

Another option would be to use a HDMI switching box such as these. This means that you'll probably want to invest in a Universal Remote to simplify the switching process, but will probably provide you with the highest quality solution in terms of PQ.

EDIT:The switching box has the added benefit of only needing to run a single HDMI cable to the projector, which will save you the cost of a long component cable.

You might also consider another alternative; upgrading your AVR to a newer HDMI switching model as a more integrated solution

hmmm are there going to be some 2nd hand 8720's around with the RS1 coming?

Component can do the bandwidth so should be little difference if any in PQ

I would base it on how well the S97 does progressive (ie deinterlaces) vs the 8720. I'd imagine both would do a good job on 576i

Same situation with the LG box - which one does the better job - the player or the pj?

Time to try them out - there may not be much in it as the scaler on the BenQ 8720 is pretty reasonable

Edit: oops , didn't see foggys post before I wrote this. Same same

Norlec Hifi Coburg , Can have it within a day or 2 if deposit is made, providing all things go right with there supplier,as long as he doesnt havnt problems with Benq who intern,,,,,,,,,,, ok ok mine didnt arrive on the date i had organized to travel 2 hours for pickup but it did arrive eventually first thing the following morning, err make that late afternoon.Mike the salesman seemed to feel badly about it( so he should ) so

i must give them the benefit of doubt i guess.

Thanks Foggy& Norpus

Now looking into it a little deeper as i want to get use of the pq this monster can produce.

Are there any new recievers out there that might be able to help my cause for about 2k? and i will offload my beloved pana? or do you think switch box is the way to go for now?

Receivers for the video scaling part ? no. They won't be as good as the sources/pj at this task.

The only thing that would get you good scaling and switching is a dedicated scaler like the dvdo vp30 - and that would likely be overkill for your system and a bit more than $2K anyway. I think you have done well - just plug one into hdmi and one into component and use the pj remote to switch
