Euro Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 I have a Strong 5290 PVR and have just attempted to up grade the HDD from a 40 GB to a Western Digital 160 GB one, but the when I tried to format it, the message said HDD not working. Can anyone help me? Thanks Euro.
Euro Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 Thanks for the replies. Delbz what brand of drive did you install ? regards Euro.
STB Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Euro, Suggest you contact Strong tech support for advice or possible fix (if any) and recommended HD brand. Probably is seagate, as they told me that brand works well with the 5390. I think the recommended upper size is 160 for the 5390, so probably is lower for the 5290. They may have a firmware update that may extend the size as well?
Strong Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 With the current system bios the SRT 5290 will only format to 120G, the Seagate series of drives work very well and the preferrd type. The main area to check is the drive links are set to Master or if your are not sure just remove all the links that are associated with the type (Master/Cable/Slave) and leave it blank. The drivers will default to master using this method and the drive should be detected automatically. Strong
STB Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Thanks "Strong". Am I correct in saying that the upper limit for the 5390 is 160Gb, or is it higher?
jamiep Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Hi, My 2c ... when i had my 5290, i upgraded it with a seagate baracudda drive at 160GB and it worked as well as the factory unit .. no problems. The 7200RPM drives do poke out a little more heat though! Jamie
Strong Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 With Seagate series we have tested the SRT 5390 to 110 GB although we are Increasing its capability under Bios to even identify bigger drive sizes as these drives are becoming readily available at cheap prices. Also apart from heat bigger drives due to more media platters require more current to Spin so this must also be taken into account when selecting drives. Strong
STB Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 Thankyou for the info strong, Yes heat and power requirements need to be taken into account. Hopefully a BIOS update download for the 5390 may be made available in the future for current interested owners? I'm sure I can cope with "only" an 80GB drive till after the 12 months warranty period.
andrew1503559519 Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 Dear Strong Good to hear that you are following this forum and are still supporting 5290s. They began life very highly rated but have been criticised of late. The main issues seem to be failing to complete a recording and dropping out of timeshift mode, even with the latest software. What workarounds exist? Are any more software revisions planned?
