pinecone Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Item: KEF 104/2 or 105/3 speakersPrice Range: $1k --> $several k (?)Item Condition: As good as possible for 20+-year-old speakers Item Location: Prefer NSW, but happy to work with shipping if the seller isExtra Info: My father has wanted a set of KEFs since I was a kid, and I've decided for his birthday this year to try and find a pair. It seems that these are not particularly thick on the ground, I've only been able to find one set that didn't sell on ebay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/KEF-105-3-Floor-Speakers-/122092629492?hash=item1c6d49adf4%3Ag%3Atv4AAOSw0UdXt9cr&nma=true&si=%2FxuI100biWIf%2FVSwzQK9MP0JyqE%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557), and nothing here in the classifieds or the classifieds archive - hence the question mark on the price range. If I'm way off on price I'm happy to be told so, one data point is not a lot to go off. I'm located in Wollongong and my father is in Sydney, but I'm happy to pick them up from anywhere between Byron and Eden. Alternatively, if there's nothing local shipping is on the table - although I can imagine that's a pain for the seller and there's always the risk of damage in transit. Anyway, thanks in advance for checking this out - hopefully my ad shakes something loose!
Lansche plasma guy Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 I'll be the good samaritan :-) I just did some googling for you. There is a pair for sale in Bankstown, Sydney for $850 (which is the sort of money they should be going for) on Gumtree. The ad appeared on 6 August and is still valid so they look like they haven't sold. They also come with the optional Kube which extends the low end (at some slight loss in transparency). Really nice sounding speakers. There was a great write up on Enjoy the Music where they apparently sounded great with the 47 labs gain card (and no doubt the really affordable gain clones). Here is the link for you: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/bankstown/speakers/kef-reference-104-2/1120569567 LPG 2
EV Cali Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 (edited) The Kef 104/ 2' s normally go for between $600 - $1200 depending on condition. So the ones in the add mentioned look to be a good buy. Plus most of the sales appear to be in America not here. I have a pair that I am presently restoring ,some water damage to the cabinets plus the inner foam , or "doughnuts" on the internal bass speakers needs to be replaced. not an expensive job but quite common. In the photos of the ones linked to they look ok so that is a bonus. The bottom ones can be seen through the bass ports. I note no grills though. Good luck Edited September 1, 2016 by EV Cali
pinecone Posted September 1, 2016 Author Posted September 1, 2016 LPG, Thank you so much! I didn't even think to check gumtree - a complete brain-fade on my part. I've just contacted the seller, hopefully they're still available. Thanks also for the tip on the 47labs amp - I have to admit I'm well outside my knowledge here (I personally stick to headphones 95% of the time) so I'll definitely be reading up on how to get the best performance and pairing out of the KEFs. Very much appreciated!
pinecone Posted September 1, 2016 Author Posted September 1, 2016 Robin, Thanks so much for the input - particularly on the price range for the 104/2s. As I mentioned, I have no feel for the market on these and they don't seem to crop up too often so it's great to have another point of reference. I really appreciate your comments on the ones in the gumtree ad, it's good to know that they look in good shape to a trained eye. I've just had a quick look into replacing the rubber surrounds on the internal drivers and there are some pretty comprehensive youtube videos on it - so if that needs doing it should be a relatively straightforward affair. Thanks again for your comments, fingers crossed these ones on gumtree are still available - my father will be ecstatic to finally have his own set of KEFs!
Pauline Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 (edited) Pinecone: I have a pair of 104/2 speakers which I have just brought out of storage where they have been since my husband died in 1996. They have a minor mark on the timber work however the speakers work beautifully. I still have the original boxes and packaging. My husband was very fastidious with his stereo equipment. I have held onto to the speakers for our daughters in case they were interested in speakers - alas not to be. I am happy to part with them as I am moving on with my life and down scaling. I do not want to take them with me as they will only be in storage. I want someone to enjoy them. Item: KEF 104/2 SpeakersPrice Range: Open to offersItem Condition: Very good condition. Photos available Item Location: Noosa QueenslandExtra Info: I have the original boxes and internal packaging so freighting would not be an issue. Alternatively, you are welcome to come and view them at your convienence. Regards Pauline Edited November 3, 2016 by Pauline
