  1. New panasonic price list came through this week.

Price rise of approx 10% starts on all orders not filled by feb 01.

Have only heard JVC and Sharp price rise 10% from Jan 01.

Samsung price rise of 10% on LED models mid jan sometime ( not sure on other models ).

Sony is still only rumours at this stage.

Lg have pretty much cleared every tv they have and the new models in march will attract a new price.

    Interesting times for everyone.

    link or it didn't happen...

  2. The press releases threatened a 30% price rise in Feb 2009, after the holiday season ends. We can't start cheering just yet.

Various articles were not very specific, "by February", "early 2009" etc type phrases were mentioned. It's just hard to see prices going up, if they don't dare to put them up in January which is a quiet month, how will they do it later as economy slows further and more jobs are lost?

I saw a few of the TV models which sold out during xmas are now due back in stock by mid jan with even lower prices, so have to wait a few days to see if brands other then Samsung extend their bonus offers to determine the value. Regardless, it seems no rush if it's supposed to be Feb price rise anyway, I'm waiting and not worried.

If only they lifted the prices to give me an excuse to wait for 3rd generation of LED backlighting heh, am not quite satisfied with 2nd generation compared to non LED backlit TVs...

  3. Still sounds like scare tactics coming from direction of manufacturers through the wholesalers and so on... Unsold stock will thereby still be cheap come january till it's sold off (probably even cheaper). Following that we shall see what the price rise (if any) occurs AND if it does, how long can it last considering these are electronic goods...

No need to be impressed/scared by big posts using big words as the old adage says that an economist is somebody who can tell you tomorrow why the theories he had yesterday about what would happen today were wrong...

  4. Hello everyone :D

Spoke to Retravision today and I can't get any $1,599 boxed LA40A500 (only floor stock) - However, they did say wait until boxing day or the day after and they will have the LA40A610 for $1300 odd !!!

They said this is the same as the LA40A650 but without the 100mhz

Should I wait for this LA40A610 or try and find the LA40A550 instead given the price difference ?

Also, is the only difference matte vs glossy screen and cabinet design ?

Don't most people turn off 100mhz on the LA40A650 in any case ?

Any comments very much appreciated with thanks for your time / expertise in advance

from memory it's not only the 100Hz, but also the dynamic contrast, 30k to 50k, which should also translate to real contrast difference, use the Samsung website's comparison to look at them side by side...

  5. The most it can do is go up for a short time and then come tumbling down as new models are released twice a year. It's not even worth spending much because you're better of buying cheap, putting the saved money on a loan or similar and then buying a new TV every 2 years (while selling the old one) - a cheap TV in 2 years will beat some costly stuff now that if bought will have you stuck watching it for a while.

Eg I remember 2 years ago, Samsung 32" LCD (720p) with about 5k contrast for $1800 was a great xmas bargain (RRP $3k), it even had an inbuilt tuner - WOW :P . Now LG sells you a 42" for $2k with a bonus 26" that is way superior in PQ to the 2yr old Samsung...

  6. I'm inclined to think that prices won't go up. It seems like a trick to reel in people who are holding out to buy, probably as they rushed it in the last couple of years during the "xmas sale" times, only to find the same things much cheaper only weeks later.

What are they going to do with all those TVs they have in stock after the xmas rush, while the new models get announced? Increase the price? I think not...

Even if they raise a price to save face, just picture RRP going up from $4k to $5k and the TV still selling for the same $3k amount as it did before.

As far as AUD, the commodities need to rally, which should happen, though lowering the interest rates doesn't help, also USD will drop itself as they kop it some more.

  7. I can't actually see the benefit of the 7 series. From all the stuff about it, the picture quality is pretty much identical. You loose a pivoting stand, but you gain video streaming that heaps of audio devices can do externally anyway. I suppose you're just paying more to have things integrated into the TV,

series 6 has the reflection while the series 7 has the occasional glow on the edges which looks good to some people, some don't care and some don't like it, I much prefer it to the extra reflecting...

EDIT: ou yeah and 16bit processor vs a 12bit one on the 6 series ;)

  8. Cnet.com.au said the 7 series is out in september. The 6 series is more rounded, and very very very shiny. The base is also round.

Yeah I'll be waiting for the 7 series to come out in September as well and there better be some cashback or similar promotion happening because I can't wait any more (till after xmas in early jan by when another lot of models will be announced and then I 'll hesitate again).

It's been years now of waiting it out and the TVs are finally starting to look good enough for me to watch and not complain too much on SD broadcasts. Hope they don't wait till end september too !

  9. the problem with the LED lighting is it operates in 'banks'. there are 2 knows issues with this and 1 is there is a 'ball effect' where (on avsforums) people are saying the led backlighting can't keep up with the panel and you get a smearing effect. Additionally, because in really dark scenes the LED's can switch off, it can rate very highly on contrast tests. however when you have a mix of light and dark you're back to normal, or if not then you lose the light detail becuase the bank of LED's is 'off'. Cnet still gave the editors choice to the XBR...

as far as i'm aware, there's also a 'normally' backlit model that's really good as well... not sure if we'll get that here though.

ugh you edited out the link to avs, but yeah those comments on avs just killed me, I was so looking forward to the LED model and not only found out that there are issues being reported with the first generation that's not even out in Australia, but also there are issues with the 120/100Hz technologies on both Samsung and Sony HDTVs, and then that even same model TVs look different to each other as well... All I wanted was a properly working 40" LED backlighting model, how HARD can it be GEESH !!!

  10. http://product.samsung.com/hd/innov_120hz.html

When do you guys think the 500,000:1 contrast ratio, LED back lighted models will come out in Aus?

our version will be 100Hz like the F81 series compared to equivalent 71 series in USA which is 120Hz (NTSC is 60Hz so doubling frames gives 120Hz while PAL is 50Hz so doubling gives 100Hz unless I'm mistaken, though we were finished with this PAL/NTSC rubbish with advent of digital tv and hd discs, so is this only for DVDs or what?)

  11. What is the retail store price to buy one of those in the states atm?

I saw them come out in USA towards the end of August as "In Stock" in some online stores and the RRP for the 40" (LNT4081F) was as announced earlier in the year by Samsung $2999US, not long after I found it discounted to $2499, that site doesn't discount them any longer but I found it again $2499 here supposedly authorised dealer http://www.ahs-fl.com/samsung1.html, but also for $2294 at http://tvcity.tv/productview.aspx?CatID=0&ID=2325 and also suspiciously similar website $1 difference eheh http://www.everything4electronics.com/prod...ew.aspx?ID=2325

  12. I was told at JB hifi tonight that the 40" F81 will cost $2999, and due out "soon.......ish".

Well it was already slightly lower then that price ($3k with delivery) online, but going on the high margins of the previous models the real price is more like $2500 if the guy wants to be bothered making a bit less, but since there's all the M series to be sold and xmas rush time, might have to wait for January quiet time to get that price, otherwise just wait 1-2 weeks for online prices to update and show something closer to $2500...

  13. I was SO dissapointed to see the F series (F81) show up on the website today and to find that it's the equivalent to the USA 71 series, with no trace of the USA's 81-series equivalent which is only really a few hundred dollars extra (AUD is strong) and has the kikaz LED backlighting, 10-bit panel and 24p capability, I've been anxiously waiting for it this whole year and now I'm back to square one since no retailer or Samsung salespeople can tell me anything about availability of LED backlit panels in Australia... We're already 3 months behind since USA released the 71 and 81 series for selling, will be 4 months by mid december... The M series that came out in USA in March was out here promptly at start of May only 2 months after...

Samsung Australia must think we are some backwater and don't deserve decent TVs or what? Does anybody have ANY info whatsoever on the availability of 40" LED backlit or any kind of LED backlit Samsungs in Australia? Will they flog this 71 series over xmas with their special and then introduce the 81 series and take the aussies for idiots or just wait for months to release it? Will it be named F91 or what is happening ='(
