Wow, just noticed the price increase on Signature Series... I93's are up from $7999 to $11999... Anyone listened to them back to back to determine if it is justified? I'd love to hear the new model.. I have only had a brief listen to the old I93 at Vaf.

Epson Tw2000 & All The Gear
freakygeek replied to nafem's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
Good theory but the TW3000 is actually an inferior projector to the TW2000. Epson really confused people with their model numbers on that one! -
Awesome RW, I had a very brief audition of the i93's when I visited VAF earlier in the year. I would love to spend some time listening to some varied material on them. I currently have DCX G3's and am toying with the idea of upgrading them to G4mkII's to match my center speaker, but the temptation of going all out and upgrading to i93's has been playing on my mind. You must be very lucky to own the first pair of i93!

F.s. Lp Morgan 110" Motorised Screen
freakygeek replied to joshmatt's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
I am quite interested! What sort of weight would this be? Does the screen have any marks on it? And how flat is the screen? Do these screens get "wavy" with age? How much black leader is there on this screen? -
Great receiver, great projector, and can't really go wrong with Panasonic BD player IMO. Screen technics screens are also of a high quality - my friend has a fixed 100" screen from them and it is exceptional. Never listened to the Klipsch personally so can't comment there.

Hey - since you live a fair way away it would probably cost too much to ship. But where can I find a rack like that to buy? What brand is it? Or is it a custom made one? I'd like the same thing but with a black frame

Advice Please On 1080p Upgrade
freakygeek replied to tcr's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
I'm looking at the W5000 also. Fortunately I have up to 7m of throw distance to work with. Looks like with 4m that you can almost project 100" - 249cm. Link to throw distance calculator below. http://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-W5000...-calculator.htm Cheers -
Sealed boxes have a slower roll-off in freq response, vs. a correctly tuned ported enclosure which will begin to roll off at a lower Freq, but will roll off sharper. More margin for error in a sealed alignment. Vented boxes require more internal volume as has already been mentioned. Less power handling worries with a sealed enclosure, but ultimately less SPL when compared with a correctly designed/executed ported enclosure. Download WinISD (free) and have a play around with different drivers and enclosures! I still have a dream of building a house with an integrated Infinite Baffle subwoofer system.... Take a look at the link, but beware, you might end up addicted and want to start doing strange things to your listening room...!!! http://ibsubwoofers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=projects

Couldn't agree more. I don't know what price range the OP is looking at, but perhaps something with active servo control might give him the musicality he desires? Velodyne etc? I was very keen on building some Rythmik DS1500 subwoofers ( http://www.rythmikaudio.com/DS1500ci.html ) but then our dollar went through the floor * I'm a doofus, just noticed the Sub-$1000 price range. Interested in DIY at all though? Could open up some options for you.

Well the thread title mentions upscaling - that's all. Basically the question has been answered - only the most expensive receivers will do any processing to a 1080p 24p HDMI input, and even then I still think you're better off just having a reasonable quality player to begin with. As others have said, the Pana BD35 is good value, as are the Sony players.
-
Bluray doesn't need to be upscaled, as it is 1080p natively. What do you call a "cheap bluray" ?

Hunters and Collectors - Ghost Nation.... I rediscovered this album, I haven't listened to it in ages... but I didn't remember that it was so well produced!

I am powering my Vaf DC-X's with a Denon AVR3808, for music and HT duties. I would like to experiment with some dedicated 2ch equipment in my system at some stage, to see what benefits I can hear. The 3808 is a large step up from the previous AVR3806 which I owned also, it seems to have more controlled bass and much improved sound stage.

Un-even Front Speaker Levels
freakygeek replied to ratty05's topic in Home Cinema General Discussion
+1 for a faulty / disconnected driver. I have had the same happen to me before. Mine was only 5db out however, different speaker design.. Having a look at the resultant EQ curves (if your receiver can show you these) is also a help for diagnosis. A massive hole in the midrange the auto-EQ is trying to correct would indicate a midrange driver, etc. You should be able to diagnose it just by listening closely to each driver whilst playing some music, however. -
Putting Centre Speaker On Top Of Av Cabinet?
freakygeek replied to visionplay's topic in Home Cinema General Discussion
I have mine sitting under a 50" Pana... Works just perfectly. I put some felt pads on the bottom of it to protect it / minimize vibrations... See Image -
I generally try and avoid the CBD when the yokels take over for Country Music, hehe.

Oh dear... do people really have that impression? lol...

More subs were a project in the pipeline that was canned as soon as the Aussie dollar turned to poo. I was going to order two Rythmik DS1500 servo subwoofer kits and build those. I think that would have been sufficient. Oh well... the time will come. I watched Hellboy II last night and there definitely isn't a lack of bass.... Many subsonic monster noises and explosions were felt.

VAF Gen question - help please
freakygeek replied to explorer2203's topic in Speakers, Soundbars and Subwoofers
Yes, "revealing" would be a term I would associate with the VAF's. -
Yeah, altering the driver to suit their requirements to achieve the end result they want. I'm sure Phil at Vaf would tell us exactly why Thanks - I like the 3808 too. It sounds fantastic to my ears in 2ch compared to previous Denon's I've had too. I'm in Tamworth NSW.

Problem With Yamaha Rx-v463 Pana Bd-35
freakygeek replied to Grampus's topic in Home Cinema General Discussion
Sounds like the Yamaha is the culprit to me. Any chance of trying another receiver? Or taking your receiver to the store to test with their TV/Bluray perhaps? Just out of curiosity, does the RXV463 decode HDMI audio or only act as a HDMI switcher? -
Cheers! Yeah, I know what you mean... I love seeing other VAF setups too - do you have pics of yours anywhere? I was using a DC6 before, which is now in use with another DC6 as a surround back. The DCX is a lot nicer for dialogue, I found the DC6 to be a little "boxy" especially with deeper male voices. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade if you're considering it - and if you have the space! It's massive...

Evolution Of Your Audio System
freakygeek replied to mfedley's topic in Home Cinema General Discussion
Cool topic - I'd like to see what sort of replies you get... At about age 15, My first system was a pair of 3-way speakers my dad built with my uncle while Uni. They were floorstanding using Peerless drivers in a sealed enclosure. I bought a Sanyo integrated amp second hand (2x25w or something) to drive them, using my PC mainly as a source. I came across a Marantz 2ch Integrated for about $30 at a cash converters while still in highschool, so I grabbed it. I had to clean up the noisy pots and then it was perfect! It was much nicer than the little Sanyo. A little later I wanted to experiment with surround so I found a Sony STR-DE505 ProLogic receiver. I bought some Tandy Pro-LX5 speakers with the Linaeum dipole tweeters and used them for rear speakers, and I used another 3-way speaker from a Kenwood Midi system for the centre channel. ahhh, experimentation on a budget! Not too long after this I looked around for some new speakers. I had heard good things about the VAF DCX so I bought them as a kit, and built them with a mate. Wow.. it was a revelation. These were so different to anything I'd listened to before. Imaging, soundstaging, was better than I'd ever heard. I begin to understand what a lot of these terms meant that I had read about... I still have these speakers as my main speakers now, 10 years on. As I worked in a hi-fi/electrical store occasional bargains appeared. The best would have to be the Nakamichi 730 receiver I scored for a ridiculously low price. 105wrms x 2, about 20kg's... but all of the touch controls were stuffed. So, as it had pre-out and main-in's, I simply used it as a poweramp, with the PC as the source. This drove the VAF's beautifully, much better than ever before. So clean and effortless. I also scored a Pioneer PDS-503 stable platter CD player, which I still have today. I then bought a Denon AVR-3300 receiver to get into the world of digital surround sound, and a VAF DC-6 centre speaker to go with it. I used the little Genexxa/Tandy LX5's as rear speakers. After a while I decided I wanted to play around with subwoofers, so I looked around and decided to build a Peerless 831857 12" woofer in a vented enclosure. 220L enclosure, a rather large beast. -3db point worked out around 21hz from my playing in WinISD etc. I set it up with an active crossover and used the Nakamichi to drive it. Bass extension was deep and clean but unfortunately these drivers didn't have a lot of Xmax so I ended up destroying a few of them in the process of playing around. A while later a friend wanted to build a subwoofer for a school project, so I helped him design a sealed box for an Adire Audio Shiva 12". A bit later I bought the completed project from him as he had no place to use it. In more recent times I have upgraded my receiver, first to a 3806 then my current 3808. Added a Panasonic Plasma and Bluray. Upgraded my centre channel to a Vaf DCX Gen4, and bought some used DC7's and another DC6 centre to use as Surround Back's. Next step will probably be to build a new DIY subwoofer. I had almost ordered 2 of the DS1500 kits from Rythmik Audio then the dollar went through the floor So I put a hold on things for a while. I'm sure there are plenty of steps I have missed, but the general jist of it is there, hehe.. Pics of my system are in the Setups / Construction forum. -
+1 to Ingenue, listened to that over the weekend. Listened to some of Toto's greatest hits last night, "I Will Remember" sounds fantastic IMO... those drums are sweet. A little off topic as it isn't 2-channel - but I bought John Mayer's "Where The Light Is" on Bluray, in Dolby TrueHD... quite impressed!
