  1. Radiohead are touring in November this year. Tickets on sale to the general public on 1st march through Ticketek (Ticketmaster). Will likely sell out in seconds with ticketmaster website crashing under the load and thousands of people punching their computer as per the norm with these high demand sales.

There was an exclusive presale event this morning through Chugg entertainment for a very small number of tickets to different shows. You had to link through their facebook site. I managed to get 1 ticket to the 17th November show at Rod Laver despite the best efforts of the ticketmaster website to thwart me with the most difficult captcha in the history of the website.

Scalpers are already flogging the tickets on ebay for A$700....

  2. Album:

Felicity Groom - Gossamer (Felicity's sound is kinda a bit like Sarah Blasko meets early PJ Harvey with a hint of a dark ballad Nick Cave edge), but she does a few more pop friendly songs as well

Beirut - The Rip Tide (not a single filler track on this)

  3. Hi jdh500, the transport is AMR's own custom mech using the best bits from Philips and Sony. It's a fully floating cast steel well. The AMR gear has an importer in Melbourne - Maxmedia and the contact is Cameron Keating.

AMR also make a cheaper very similar-looking (but on a lesser OTT scale and using a different DAC chip) player with USB and digital inputs. It's the CD-777.

    Cheers,

    EK

I think I heard the CD-777 when I visited Cameron last, hooked up to Uno Nano's. I recall it had a remote that was practically a solid tungsten ingot in weight :sorry:

  4. Thought this will probably interest a few people and I suspect tickets will sell fast.

    3. The Oscillation – On the Run

    4. Wolf People – Time

    5. The Last Hurrah!! – The Great Gig in the Sky

    6. The Pineapple Thief – Money

    7. Doug Paisley feat. Garth & Maud Hudson – Us and Them

    8. Matt Berry – Any Colour You Like

    9. Neville Skelly – Brain Damage

    10. Of Arrowe Hill – Eclipse

    11. Malachai – Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part1)

    12. Beak> – Welcome to the Machine

    13. John Foxx and the Maths – Have a Cigar

    14. Lia Ices – Wish You Were Here

    15. The Orb – Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part 2)

The only artist of those I am familiar with is Matt Berry (and only for his work as a comedian on the IT Crowd and The Mighty Boosh). I'm imagining Dixon Bainbridge doing Pink Floyd a bit like this. ...

I'll see if I can find some of these on youtube.

At work so I'll give these a listen tonight.

  6. The whole tradition/culture of washi/origami/handicrafts that japan has kinda filters through into quite a few of the modern consumer industries in both the presentation and design aesthetics. I think the Japanese labels recognise their primary target audience (Japanese audiophiles) are pretty discerning consumers, something the Western labels have kinda ignored a bit untill the mp3 thing made them refocus a bit on that area.

If you've ever been to any of the big department stores over there (particularly the high end ones) you'll understand how that concept of high quality presentation is pretty much ingrained into the way they try to attract customers.

  7. Are the covers any good though? I have an album where artists covered songs from the "The Wall" (I think also this was a Mojo magazine thing) and it was so forgettable I could barely get through it once... Admittedly "The Wall" is a very distinct album so not sure if it was a good idea to try and cover in the first place...

  8. What size room do you have. Everything I've read about MBLs and other omnidirectional speakers suggests decent sized rooms and flexibility in location are pretty crucial to getting the best out of them even if by their nature the sweet spot is wider.

Also if you get the MBLs what amp would you use (with the sensitivity of them what they are) it will guide you into certain amp requirements (a decent amount of power probably the most critical).

If he is NSW and you are as well, it would be a no-brainer to go listen to them though.

  9. Nice house plans!

Just a few things to chew on/think about -

Have you engaged a specialist soundproofing firm to advise or is that something from your builder?

Its not something that is simple or should be taken lightly, once you've built it, you cant change it like say a projector or amps or speakers.

The method you've suggested wont have good low freuqncy isolation (below 125hz)...they dont test for that. Have you considered HVAC? again quite important, as is the location of your equipment.....really should be in another, seperate sealed space.

Double french doors are bad news for soundproofing, almost impossible to get a good result

On the acoustics side, how are they going to manage the bass for the room? how many subs? how are they going to eq/calibrate the subs?

Are you going to have multiple rows? ask the consulting firm how they're going to manage the row to row, seat to seat variations in response

Lighting - just a suggestion, look at Dynalite, its a far superior product to Cbus, more advanced, more flexible, more reliable......put it this way, Dynalight had the main contract for lighting control for the China Olympics. Cbus has a whole host of programming difficulties and it doesn't integrate with control systems as well. You can probably get Dynalite cheaper or for the same price too

OZTS have the best AT screen material you can buy. Its the stuff SMX use. The problem is they dont do a curved and masked screen in Australia. You can get an SMX one, but it'll cost you about 12 grand.....the local guys do us in the eye for that....so cheap in the US

You getting a control system? Crestron? AMX? RTI? Control4...? another?

Soundproofing is something I am totally passionate about - ask them, whoever you're advisers are, what the soundfloor of the room will be with all the gear on? if they wont warrant it, use someone else - it should be ~20db, which is about the quietest part of a film soundtrack (well 22 actually, but you need some room to move)

Good luck with it! so much fun building.....we did it, I'd love to do it again - not because we got it wrong, its just plain fun!

The double doors were really part of the design to get the plans pass council in line with the lighting and energy efficiency requirements as they have clear glass. There is nothing however stopping me from modifying the doorway after construction when I don't need specific council approval.

With the construction of the internal room within the larger room this is the type of construction I'm considering. Part of the reason for the overall size of the room is it gives me the option to do it.

    http://www.ortech.com.au/systems/wallsystem.html

HVAC definitely a consideration, will need to be implemented properly when I choose a firm to fit an air-con system. There's also a whirlbird thing to the ceiling that I'll have to deal with as it was part of the ventilation requirements.

Will consider Dyanlite, not commited to CBus. All the lighting power supply is in conduit so it can be done after handover I guess as that's what I was doing with c-bus.

Probably go for 2 subs - no choice made as I only have a smallish Rel sub at present.

Speakers will actually be firing down the length of the room - so doorway at rear right corner of the room.

Thanks for the comments, will look into the acoustically transparent screen material you mention

  10. Thanks for sharing! Very interested to see how your place progresses.

Just a side question, had noticed you owning some Avantgardes, did you get them locally? Was wondering if you knew of any that are setup and running, that I could have a listen to? :thumb::)

    Cheers!

There is no local dealer in Western Australia at present. Mine were bought direct from the Australian distributor who is based in Melbourne. They were actually his own personal speakers that he was selling to upgrade to Duos. Just very lucky with the timing on those. Last time I asked him I don't believe he had sold any into WA (I think there are a couple of ex singaporean guys who brought their speakers with them into Perth), bought from Audionote Singapore though I haven't met any of them.

If you are interested I could organise a gtg, would be limited to when I could have it and numbers.

  11. Hi everyone,

I'm in the very early stages of having a new house built, one of the main features of which, will be a dedicated listening room/home theatre of "considerable" size. :thumb:

I spent about a month going back and forth with the project builder I will be using to try and refine the design of the house and the location and size of the listening room to both satisfy the requirements of the features that people expect in a house (modern sized kitchen, good bathrooms, open plan living area) and also a very big listening room with uniform geometry that gives me a lot of volume to play with. For obvious reasons these two requirements meant I had to find a block of uniform size and importantly width which given the size of blocks in Aus is going down, did limit the blocks of land I could consider.

This is the house plan that I have ended up with.

Main features of the listening room will be:

Dimensions: 5.46m x 8.0m (width and length), room is sunken down 1 course of bricks (870mm) and then the height of the ceiling is 33 courses (2.87m) above the main floor level of the rest of the house stepping down to 30 courses (2.61m) for 1/2 metre round the boundary of the room. It's pretty much a West Australian standard to talk of ceiling heights in terms of the number of bricks stacked.

Construction of the walls of the home threatre will be using an single Acoustic Maxi Brick which is a special brick designed to reduce sound transmission.

One of the main reasons for sinking the home theatre 1 course is to provide additional space to put in a suspended floor primarily for low level frequency sound isolation purposes to the rest of the house and neighbourhood. At this stage the volume of the room would allow me to consider creating a room inside a room by using something like Ortech panels. Haven't yet decided on that.

At this stage I will have double entry doors to the opposite end of the room to where the speakers will be. If I do go all out with isolation I may consider specialist recording studio room doors.

Other features of the room - a drop down projection screen built into the ceiling - likely a 130 inch screen at this stage. Still looking into acoustically transparent screen options.

A projector ceiling mounted. Brand and model to be determined.

Lighting - I am having all the lighting placed in conduit so I can have a Cbus in a box solution installed after handover of the house to provide full control of lighting in the room from a remote. Not sure what specific lights I will have but the decor I want is contemporary minimalism.

All cabling in the room will be done by Intelligent Homes. Cat6 standard, my HTPC will probably end up in there as will my PS3.

Seating is an open question. Probably two tiers of seats with the 2nd one raised.

Treatment of the room will consist of bass traps in all corners to the ceiling and then broadband absordbers to all walls and ceilings. Carpet to the floor. Final design will be done by Audio By Numbers (a consulting firm based in Melbourne).

The main speakers will be Avantgarde Uno and rest of the gear per current signature. Obviously having a room of this size will allow me to contemplate shifting up to the new Duo Grossos or maybe even the Duo Mezzos though they are more expensive.

At this stage I will likely have all the gear on some low profile sound platforms.

I am working on a Google Sketchup 3D visualisation of the entire house so I will put up some shots of that when I have finished it.

I'm at the final costings/council approval stage so might potentially be in the new house early next year though the final fitout of the theatre is obviously going to be a work in progress for some time.. Anyway will keep a bit of a running log so people can see how this room evolves from scratch to completion.

Here's the view of the listening room at present :)

  12. Anyone had problems lately with PS3 cd/sacd playback.

No, for some odd reasons I ocassionally get a can't identify a SACD as a SACD error but that is only with a couple of SACD. The Ladysmith Black Mambazo one in particular.

I've been lucky with my ps3, I've heard anedoteally quite a few of the original release models have died on people after 3 or so years. I actually think it's a great SACD player, one of the few that's capable of 5.1 SACD playback without spending lots of money. The fact it actually got SACD capability must have really been a pet project of some high up exec at Sony given the format hasn't really been "Winning" Charlie Sheen style. The general DAC for mp3 and cd playback in it though isn't all that great.

I heard the later models the quality of the build went down as they tried to reduce the manufacturing costs. And of course they ditched the SACD module as well to reduce costs.
